Natt and I visited all six stations on the island of Anglesey in Wales! From Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch to Holyhead!

Insane job nailing that name like nothing! Yup, choosing such a long name for the station to attract tourism was such a genius move. For those who don't know the story: The original name of the medieval township was Pwllgwyngyll, meaning "the pool of the white hazels". Pwllgwyngyll was one of two townships making up a parish. The parish name was recorded as Llanfair y Pwllgwyngyll. The long name was supposedly contrived in 1869 as an early publicity stunt to give the station the longest name of any railway station in Britain. The name was created by a local tailor, though we don't know the name of said tailor. This form of the name adds a reference to the whirlpool in the Menai Strait known as the Swellies and to the small chapel of St. Tysilio, located on a nearby island. The final -gogogoch (red cave) on the other hand was inspired by the Ceredigion/Cardiganshire parish of Llandysiliogogo, rather than by any local features. But get this, the story of this place gets better. In 2020, a new species of bacteria was discovered from soil collected there, and they named the species....Myxococcus llanfair­pwll­gwyn­gyll­go­gery­chwyrn­drobwll­llan­tysilio­gogo­gochensis. Brilliant.

The airport that you can see at rhosneigr is RAF Valley, so that’s why there were so many planes

I have many fond memories of Holidays in Rhosneigr with my grandparents, staying at the Hotel which was owned by a family member. The moment you showed the square and the corner shop I smiled with memories of running up the hill to get ice cream or drinks.

And the thing is, that's not even the longest place name in the world! There is a hill in New Zealand called Taumata­whakatangihanga­koauau­o­tamatea­turi­pukaka­piki­maunga­horo­nuku­pokai­whenua­ki­tana­tahu which has 85 letters in its name compared to Llanfair PG's 58. But not even the hill in New Zealand has the longest place name when you consider the ceremonial name of Bangkok...Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit. This name means "City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Vishvakarman at Indra's behest". However, most Thais just call the city Krung Thep. The name Anglesey itself is thought to have come from a Viking place name. Derived from the Old Norse, either Ǫngullsey "Hook Island" or Ǫnglisey "Ǫngli's Island". No record of such an Ǫngli survives, but the place name was used by Viking raiders as early as the 10th century and later adopted by the Normans during their invasions of Gwynedd. Before then it was referred to as Mona by the Romans, referring to the Celtic word for mountain, the same etymology that gave rise to the Isle of Man. The Welsh call the island as Ynys Môn.

RAF Valley is a big Air Force training base. It is also the commercial Anglesey Airport but unfortunately it’s one service, a twice daily flight to Cardiff, was cancelled due to the pandemic and the Welsh Government, who subsidised the route, are not restarting it 🙁

Holyhead is a very strange station layout. Platforms 1 and 2 are connected by that building (which has been shut for years), the tiny carpark with the clock in the middle, and also via a new-ish bridge across the water. From Platform 2 you can access Platform 3 and also the ferry terminal. The whole thing needs a bit of sprucing up.

The main reason for the layout is that originally the ferries to Ireland tied up in the middle, with one platform either side of them. I recollect that the evening boat from Dun Laoghaire was met by connecting trains to both London and Manchester, meanwhile another train arrived from London to connect with the return sailing to Dun Laoghaire. I used these a lot in the 1970s when my parents lived in Ireland and cheap flights hadn't yet been invented. The ferries were not car ferries, and the connecting trains to/from London had a sleeping car which I occasionally used. The boat trains were packed, the ones to/from London were called The Irish Mail because they conveyed mailbags which were put on the ferry.

Originally the ferries sailed right up to the station so you could get off the train, cross the platform and get on the ferry. Hence the unusual layout. This was still the case in 1970, but had changed by the late 1980's.

mmmmbye! I still remember pulling into Holyhead platform one on the last train of the day a little before midnight a few years back, and waiting three hours on the floor of the station building for my ferry to Dublin. Back then it was a tired formica-and-lino place with chipped red benches and a little shop, but nothing much else in the way of services. Looks like they might be freshening it up? That'd be nice :)

Re the 153s, I think a trip to Oban on the Highland Explorer might be fun to give you 3 plus hours of 153. The one back at 05:20 might mean you have it to yourself! You'll need to bring a bike. Could be combined with a ferry trip or two.

I wouldn't think of the steps up to the train as brilliant because they do seem like a massive pain in the arse for wheelchair users et al. Do you have any idea how they make a vague stab at accessibility or do they just tell people to take a bus? I never thought of it as a publicity stunt which is still working to this day, but it is a very good way of thinking about it.
