In a spur of the moment decision, I decided to visit the three request stops on the Heart of Wessex line! Thornford, Yetminster, and Chetnole!

If 4 hours between trains is bad, you should see the Limerick Junction to Waterford line with only 2 trains in each direction a day and no train service on Sunday

The smallest stations I've seen are in Cornwall. The Looe Valley line, for example, has platforms that can accommodate train of a maximum length of just 2 carriages, usually (at the time I last was in Cornwall) the trains were just a single Class 153 unit running between Looe and Liskeard, reversing outside (some actually calling at) Combe Junction Halt

Coombe, St Keynes, Causeway and Sandplace can't even officially fit a 2 car 150; the rear door is not on the platform.

Chetmole mow has a replica "period" sign on its tiny platform, reading "Chetnole Halt." Bristol Temple Meads is the usual destination on this line these days..

Thornton, Yetminster and Chetnole stations are very tiny but vast unique and yes they are in the middle of nowhere. Maybe you should do more videos of nowhere railway stations. Plus have you done Hilsea station that doesn’t get as many trains stopping there.

I use to travel from Thornford and back most days for work. In the winter I'd have to wave the train down with my phone torch so the driver can actually see me. Very rare to see other passengers there! I also find it pretty funny the train just stops short of the platform and they just open the front door, your own personal train almost.

Ah, my closest request stops! It's silly that you can't even park or walk without getting run over to Chetnole and Thornford, Chetnole especially, in fact I know Chetnole locals that use Yetminster instead because of it!

Hi Nick. Nice to see videos about deepest Dorset railways, thank you. How about a bit of nerdy useless information? Perhaps in theory you visited a fourth station on the Heart of Wessex line. After leaving Maiden Newton going toward Thornford you passed the site of Cattistock station, when it closed in 1966 its two concrete platforms were moved, remember this was once a double track main line which was "rationalised" i.e. singled in 1966. One platform went to Thornford and the other to Chetnole, this was done to replace old wooden platforms originally in use at both locations. Does that information mean you can "tick off" a ghost station?

Brilliant video Nick, I don't fancy the idea of walking alone on country lanes in the middle of nowhere really lol. Also I'm so disapointed that the yellow button on the help point didn't work in the end.

Disappointed that I never did the Heart of Wessex line when I lived in that part of the country... especially as it had top&tail 31s in those days! Yetminster sounds like it should be Jim Hacker's local station (one for the oldies there) 🤣

Sometimes tiny stations seem irrelivant, but as shown in this video they can be some of the nicest little places and so full of character! Also cool video didn't even know half of these stations existed! 🤣

I'm also planning a trip to Chetnole at some stage in the coming months, I went to Sugar Loaf last weekend and it's a direct train for me in Bath (Chetnole that is, to be clear!). The guard on the heart of Wales line had never let anyone off at Sugar Loaf and the driver was very excited to stop there too. GWR trains on the Heart of Wessex line terminate at Bristol all the time these days, it's super normal. It's a general region I've gone through plenty of times in the car, but haven't actually really visited that much. Every time ive tried the next train button at Avoncliff, it never works Update having now been to Chetnole: nope the help point doesn't work it just goes please wait for a while and doesn't connect but there were people getting on or off at all 3 request stops both on the way there and back

My mum used to work as a live in housekeeper/cook at one of the big houses south of yeovil/sherborne. I spent several lazy summers in the late 1980s wandering those same backlanes, and catching the odd train out of thornford to go _somewhere else_ for a day.
