I just love the way they used so many old obscure references to fill out the background and world they created for the movie. They could have easily used generic cartoon stock objects and no one would have cared, but the fact the they really took the time to flesh out the world with all this stuff really shows that the artists behind it care about what they were doing. I also think that making their version of Brooklyn this retro wonderland full of references to the old Nintendo games is a great idea.

Mario playing Kid Icarus is my favorite easter egg because of how honored Pit must be being a Mario fan himself. Also thanks to the 4th-wall destroying nature of Kid Icarus Uprising openly accepting its existence as a game sequel, Pit appearing as a video game could count as a full in-person cameo.

The Super Star also has a more dramatic rendition when Bowser finds it at the start of the movie. Bowser's floating lair thing is also possibly a reference to Paper Mario, where Bowser's castle appears as a floating chunk of land underneath Peach's castle, with the giant spike balls on chains as its anchors. The Ghost House theme from Super Mario World plays while Luigi is escaping from the Dry Bones horde. The "peace sign" on the flag Baby Luigi holds isn't a peace sign, it's a skull. The modern P-Switch theme plays while Mario is getting lost in the pipe maze before arriving at the castle. In the vignette of Bob-Omb Battlefield, not only are the cannon and floating island visible, but so is the bridge and the Cap Block beside it - though it's replaced with a standard yellow Question Block. And not really an Easter Egg but more of a missed opportunity, but the voxel art for the Question Block that turns into the obstacle course is completely original to the movie - it does not match any existing Question Block sprites.

The sheer amount of these easter eggs and references and just how deep-cut so many of them can be are a testament to just how much love was put into this movie and its source material. Say what you will about Illumination, but I think I will always love and respect this movie for many reasons, one such reason being that it clearly shows just how much the team knew exactly what they wanted the Super Mario Bros. Movie to be. No potty humor. No politics. No woke BS. It's just a simple, fun romp of an adventure with charm oozing from its every pore. And nowadays, it's all I could ask for from a movie.
@TiagoGomez-hb9teАй бұрын
I mean the movie’s semi woke (HE’S NOT IMPORTANT!!!) and the LGBTQ community is subtly represented. It’s just tame compared to other stuff because of Nintendo’s quality control and because of the zeal of the fans. No because of Illumination. The development phase was just Nintendo trying to scrub off the Illumination cliches and tropes and it still reeks of Illumination at times, especially how the movie rewrote Peach and DK and that awful Peaches song that wasted Jack Black’s talent…

5:16 its possible that, this whole time, Talon was based on that old design and everyone thought he was just a Mario reference for decades, so i like to think its a two-in-one reference because the arm hair is way too uncanny for it to not at least be connected to Talon

and Mario's uncle has a certain resemblance to Ingo as well.

@@Dairunt1 that's a bit more of a stretch imo, but this movie is practically built out of Easter Eggs so it's anyone's guess

How is it uncanny exactly? Wouldn't it be weirder if someone with such a lush facial hair doesn't have any conspicuous body hair? I say most likely it's just a coincidence. Talon didn't invent mutton chops after all.

@@bluedekrass this is an animated movie, nobody would notice if he lacked arm hair

Mario is living in the Truman show and everyone is in on it except him. Now that would be a good plot that would make the easter eggs meaningful.

Some of the paintings on the wall of the rich couple's house look like the underground tiles from Super Mario Bros 3 4:34

You forgot to mention: The nacho bowl has an inverted pyramid design on it. The stained glass window of Peach from Mario 64 appears in her castle.

Pretty sure you missed a Kong... Kiddy Kong to be precise. It's in one of the shots showing Diddy and the others in the crowd, but a bit more zoomed out than the one used in this video to mention them.
