Something that I think makes Super Saiyan Densetsu worth checking out: you can actually fight Nappa and Vegeta in a way that changes which characters end up dying and needing to be resurrected. Piccolo is the only character who has to die for story's sake, but if you fight the Saiyans well you can actually go to Namek with Krillen, Chaotzu, Tien and Yamcha in the party (or some combination). I always thought that was really interesting.

he did say specific PAL regions in every game except the first one, to be true. All 4 fighting games were released at least in Spain as well. France, Spain and Italy were the three European countries were anime (specially Dragon Ball and Captain Tsubasa) was huge in the early 90's, but only France had a big enough market to consider translation so, we got all those games in French... I've learnt English playing Link to the Past, and some French playing DBZ2's story mode. Thanks, insensitive Nintendo Europe.

As someone who *is* a fan of the series, I'd argue that most of these games are lackluster at best, with the sole exception being _Hyper Dimension_ depending on your tastes. If you're looking for games that utilize the IP well and that you *don't* necessarily have to be a fan to enjoy (that aren't the _Budokai_ games or _FighterZ),_ then I'd personally recommend the following: #1) _Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure_ (GBA): A side-scrolling platformer/beat-em-up that occasionally plays like a fighting game. It chronicles the entire story of Kid Goku, has sprite work, solid gameplay, and there's even a 2P versus. This is seriously one of the best games on the GBA - maybe not top twenty, but I feel easily top fifty. #2) _Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors_ (GBC): One of those games that doesn't neatly fit into any genre, this is basically a tactical RPG card game. There are top down sections where you wander around on a map and can find secret cards to build your deck, but it's honestly pretty obtuse, and you'll probably need a guide to find everything. The highlight is the battle system, and being able to select any character that you've unlocked in New Game+. It's also one of the rare few games at the time to cover the entire arc from when Radtiz arrives, until the end of _Z._ A bit weird, but worthwhile, imo. #3 & 4) _Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku 2_ and _Buu's Fury_ (GBA): A top down action game. These are *massive* improvements over the first game. Not only is the art much better, there are also multiple characters selectable, and a slew of sidequests. The third game even has equippable items. #5) _Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans_ (DS): With as many _DBZ_ RPGs that utilize a card gimmick, it's nice to see one that has a more traditional combat system. The highlight of this is the sprite work and animation - which are absolutely incredible - but everything else is fairly rock solid as well. With a game that just covers the time from the 23rd --World Martial Arts Tournament-- Tenkaichi Budokai to the fight between Goku and Vegeta, you'd think that this game would be severely lacking in content… but boy, would you be wrong. It isn't 100% accurate to the series by a long shot, but it's still entertaining stuff, and there's a ton of callbacks to the original manga, which is nice. This game was also made by Monolith Soft, who later went on to make the _Xenoblade_ games. I've also heard good things about _Dragon Ball Z: Goku Gekitōden_ for the Game Boy, which is an RPG that has real time combat, and covers the entirety of the Namek arc. However, I've personally never played that one, and while it *does* have an English translation, it's translated from Chinese, and is just barely comprehensible. For anyone that hasn't heard of these, then I hope that my descriptions have managed to pique your interests, and that you enjoy playing them. Cheers.

The reason why _Hyper Dimension_ has an asterisks next to it is because, while competent, I don't feel that it's on the same level as other less well-known fighting games on the SNES, such as _Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters_ and _Sailor Moon S._ I think that it's a fine game to be sure - definitely better than a lot of licensed dreck on the SNES - and definitely worth your time, but I can also see why some people would be put off by it.

The 4 fighting games were only released in France and Spain, though in Spain we got the french versions but with 2 manuals, one french and the other Spanish (full color and all). I was dying to get them when I was a young boy, but they were never released close to neither my birthday or christmas season (the two chances I had to get videogames). On top of that they were extremely low distributions. I was lucky enough to get an import DBZ superbutoden 3 ntsc/j with an adapter, and played the crap out of it. Fast forward to 2009 the retro bug bit me and bought all the Dragon Ball games on Snes, and lucky me I did, cause the prices have since then skyrocketed. Nice video as always!

If there's been any video of yours that made me nostalgic about SNES games then it's gotta be this one. Spent so much time playing all of those games (especially Hyper Dimension and that ported RPG game) almost 2 decades ago back when people still recommended zsnes and even the worst english 'translations' were amazing to see and play. HD certainly holds up as a fighting game even if it has less replay value compared to the SF games, Killer Instinct or anything from SNK and I guess that the last two games in your video are still kinda neat for those who need a visual novel/adventure game fix while not being bothered watching 200+ episodes in a row or something (or reading the manga but let's be honest, most DBZ fans just watch the anime anyway). From newer games I feel that Dragonball Advanced Adventure (GBA) and DBZ Extreme Butoden (3DS) are also must-plays for Dragonball (Z) fans, same with the Budokai games because playing with dragonball characters in 3D (THREE!DEE!) was mindblowingly awesome on the PS2.

DB was a light, fun adventure show with ecchi moments and a lot of imaginative characters like monkey kids, pigs, Dracula's, dinosaurs, robots, etc. Dbz was an awful scream heavy "I'm the strongest!/no I scream the loudest and have blond hair and blue eyes so i must be the strongest!" filler filled only human looking aliens vs alien looking Aliens show.

@@ggbetz because as originally intended, the DBZ timeline was supposed to end with Frieza. But the show was such a success Toei didn't wanted that sweet cashflow to stop so they asked Toriyama for more and he got lazy so he just rehashed the same plot over and over. I was a huge fan of DB and DBZ but I never cared about Super for that same reason, I knew from the start it was going to be more of the same and I wasn't wrong. Which is a shame because DBZ had dozens of awesome characters wasted like Piccoro and Ten... Fuck, even Vegeta was turned into a mostly useless sidekick for most of the series.

DBZ Super Butouden 2 is one of my favourite games in the franchise. Cool graphics and moves, a nice Story Mode with some original stories with the movie villains (I actually do prefer the story on this over the original movies xD) and a battle system that did a good job bringing the source material onto the SFC. Also, the Japanese cheat code to unlock Goku and Broly has this Broly voice saying "Kakarot...", and you can input this command multiple times during the intro sequence for pretty funny "Ka-Ka-Ka-Ka-Ka-Kakarot..." moments. Super Butouden 3, on the other hand, was such a disappointment... There were some cool additions, but lacking a story mode and being able to fly away from any attack just makes any improvement in the fighting mechanics pointless (just to clarify, in SB1 and 2, you needed to be in split screen mode to fly. In SB3, there is no such limitation, and you can pretty much use it anytime even when being hit). Even if it's clunky, I still love Super Butouden 1 because it was my first SNES game, and played it for months. Goku's Meteor Smash and Perfect Cell's Perfect Combination are sooo broken, though. I agree on Super Saiya Densetsu being grind heavy and having ridiculous encounter rates, but I love its battle theme. It's so catchy. And the battle system, while a bit luck reliant, has some cool ideas and I'd like to see a modern game with similar but improved mechanics. Hyper Dimension is visually stunning and I find it a pretty solid fighter (I'm no expert, mind you). Goku's desperation move is one of the coolest attacks I've seen on any Dragon Ball fighting games. The story mode is ok, with some interesting extra battles, but it's nothing special. The other DB games are more of a fan item than anything else, but are nicely done enough. Wow, I wrote so much text xD I get a little excited when talking about DB games in general.

Super Butoden was bad. But we must respect their creativity and sense of experimentation (i would also add a couple of great songs, but i dont know if im just being too nostalgic about it)... There were serious limitations at the time. HD totally blew them away in terms of fighting game qualities, though at the cost of the flashiness of the quick dashes, flying and throwing huge attacks. It took a couple more hardware generations to allow a good balance of 'flashiness' and 'FG consistency' (not judging based on the likes of SF).

Don't remember how I get my hands on the cartrige, but it was in japanese an ad no idea what the text would say and I had to figure out my way on the menus (but not being a native english speaker I was used to it already as a kid). This video made me realize that it was not one game, but actually TWO the dragon ball z games I play as kid: Dragon Ball Z: Super Butouden 2 and 3. This explains why years later I tried to replay the game but not having the entire roster leave a sour taste on my mouth (in my memories the game had Butouden 2 history mode with Butoden 3 roster). Made in 92 and actually offers alternate outcomes in certain scenario’s, hidden “glitches” allowing certain enemies to join your crew as well as creative ways to go about defeating the boss. A really good open world style game for the 90’s? Really nothing to complain about there. Phenomenal game with great cut scenes too. A DBZ classic & one of the best DBZ games to date.

At the time, I didn't have much idea what Dragon Ball was (mom didn't let me watch it because it was "too violent" lol) but I still found it pretty cool to fight from really far apart or in the sky. If anything, it's worth trying on an emulator for the novelty of moving around rather than being restricted to a certain distance from your opponent.

@dbkai75
@dbkai75 5 жыл бұрын
I completely agree ! For the counter system, its also on the 2 first episode, even though there is more way to block the energy wave as in the 3rd you can make them disapear so you dont lose any HP and doesnt take the risk to lose the button mashing fight if you reply with your Kamehameha(or any other super blast) Btw, since the time I became fan of jrpg(during ff6 release time) I always wished to have this kind of gameplay element on turn based jrpg in order to counter enemy magic/skills... I liked to have parry or defensive tricks in Mario Rpg games, but something more like in DBZ 3 with the ability to strike back if you do it in the right timing etc. would be great !
@ElBribri
@ElBribri 5 жыл бұрын
@@dbkai75 that would be a great idea! Yes i forgot about the dissapearing, actually maybe you know this but if you tried a power clash and lost it, if you were quick enough you could do it again before it hit you, and if that one failed you could then do the vanishing, or defecting or the clash again! but you had to have your Ki maxed out
@dbkai75
@dbkai75 5 жыл бұрын
@@ElBribri Yes I know. ;) I just had on mind the worst case scenario but as you said, you can still either guard, deviate or make it disapear depending your ki amount and the skill you use.(unless you are ki is depleted and your character is tired)

Botuden 3 also is the only one with a handicap system. You can input a code right before the fight and it will briefly show an aura that will boost your offense and defense.

As far as I'm concerned, the tournament mode in Super Butoden 3 is the story mode. While it takes place during early Boo arc, it meant to focus on the 25th Budokai. Plus, the credits start to roll when you complete that mode. Also worth mentioning, the combat in the Super Gokuden games uses a rock, paper, scissors system which can be hard to predict.

I feel like Totsugeki Hen and Kakusei Hen weren't gone into detail about :( In Totsugeki Hen, you can speed up Goku's chance to have a turn by holding down L and R and increasing his chi. If you press start at the menu screen, you can set up various moves for Goku. Each of the 4 buttons have a rock, paper, scissors system to them. One of them being an evade or do several other defensive options, which was something you could do whether or not Goku fully inched forward for his turn. While I realize the game has a bit too much going on as far as the story repeating it's self, the games were actually pretty fun if you got into them. Kakusei Hen was a bit more straightforward as there was no movement. It was mostly a rock, paper, scissors and a bit more simplified than the first imho. You could punch, kick, use Ki, defend or charge up ki (holding L+R) to use Goku's Kamehameha or Gohan's Masenko.

Thanks for the video! I used to be a big Dragon Ball fan - I grew up watching the original Dragon Ball on TV, as did all the kids in my area in Romania, then watched DBZ as it was aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami show. I used to play all these DBZ games on my PC with an emulator with my cousin a LOT (ZSNES). And I enjoyed Super Butouden 3, as I thought it had better graphics than 1 and 2 and I was mostly interested in the Versus mode anyway. There was a SEGA Genesis / Mega-Drive game too, which was pretty OK.

I've never been a DBZ fan, but the third Super Butouden game is very nostalgic to me. I bought this CD with a lot of roms from a classmate back in high school and my cousin would try to come visit me from another town just to play that game at my place since he was (and still is) a huge fan. I liked playing as the two kids because they sounded funny. IIRC, the rom I had was in French. He also loved Go Go Ackman 3 because the main character looked like Trunks. Later we found out it was based from another manga of Akira Toriyama. Which reminds me, I have to ask him if he knows about the Dragon Quest series one of these days.

And I can tell you definitively I played every SNES game. Every single one is worth it. 16bit - 32bit Era is the fucking shit you are missing out if you don't play these gems.

Hey drunk, the last RPG game mentioned (Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokuden Kakusei Hen) doesn't only follow the story and the actions chosen are meaninless. Depending on the choices you can either have a game over - what if'esque - or even have some hard fights that if you win Gohan will be much, much strong near the end.

IIRC the fighting games were only distributed in France, and then to Spain and Italy (the text on the boxes, manual and game itself was in French in those 2 countries). I am from Spain, and at that time was there such a fever about DBZ that a lot of people spent like $250 dollars of today's money buying the japanese game and region adaptor device from import stores month ahead of its PAL release

For the last DB game there's no "Z" in the title and yeah, it was more in line with the manga with some potential alternate story route. The battle part was a bit frustrating and I recommend using save states cause you can only save after the end of a chapter and if you were defeated you have to get through the dialogue again

4:14 Actually, the PAL version of this game is exclusively in French. There's no language select, so no German, no Spanish, no Italian, and especially no English. While English does borrow some of its vocabulary from French anyway, English and French are not really mutually intelligible, as their grammar is completely different from each other and some words in French were never borrowed into English.
