The problem is, Space Megaforce is basically a downgraded version of Blazing Lazers. For the guy who said Thunder Force 4, while its the most technically impressive, they ruined the fun factor. Not a single power up makes you feel powerful, because so many basic enemies have so many hit points. Thunder Force 3 is much funner. Scrambled Valkyrie is tons of fun but not the best in my opinion. For me the best 16 bit shmup is clearly Lords of Thunder. Honestly its also better than the Neo Geo shmups, its just that good. Honorable mention to Gleylancer, the best non-CD 16 bit shmup in my opinion.

I absolutely love Super Aleste (I’m from the UK so we got that instead of Space Megaforce.) The soundtrack was amazing and so atmospheric, the levels were all well designed. Easy to start but gets challenging later in the game. Weapon system was excellent too. Lots of variety and they were all very distinct. This was the first and only SHMUP I owned as a kid on my original SNES and I can still remember almost all the levels to this day.
@KuraIthys8 жыл бұрын
All that slowdown is such a pity, because it kinda suggests the devs either didn't really know what they were doing, or couldn't be bothered. The snes CPU isn't as weak as it's made out to be, but if you mishandle your sprite data routines you end up with that nasty slowdown. Keep in mind some of these games are demonstrably almost unplayable without the slowdown though, so be careful what you wish for. XD
@EqualsDeath7 жыл бұрын
snes is shit for shmups. it's WEAK. no way around it.
@drewsebastino28897 жыл бұрын
Not quite. The 65816 in the SNES is only 3.58MHz for rom accesses if the cartridge is FastROM, and always only 2.68MHz for ram accesses vs the 68000 in the Genesis that is always 7.68MHz. However, the 68000 can only access memory every 4 cycles unlike the 65816 that accesses every cycle. However (again), the bus width of the 68000 is twice that of the 65816 (16bit vs 8bit). Taking all that into consideration, the processing power of the SNES and Genesis would appear to be the same: 2(times the clockspeed)/4(the number of cycles per memory access)x2(bus width)=1 vs. 1. However (again again), the 68000 can do 32bit calculations in hardware (which makes me wonder why more people don't consider it to be a 32bit processor?) and has multiplication and division instructions that the 65816 lack. The SNES has two sets of hardware registers for multiplication and division (the better ones cannot be used if mode 7 is, which is when you'd want to use it the most...), but writing to and reading from these is slower than the multiplication and division instructions of the 68000, which are already slow as molasses. Finally, the SNES planar graphics format is far less friendly for software rendering than the Genesis packed pixel one.While still a more powerful processor overall (nowhere near what the clockspeed would lead you to believe), most of the 68000's advantages really aren't realized in any non 3D games (where 32bit operations and multiplication and division are essential). ;====================================================================================== Kuralthys is totally correct. Many SNES devs (especially at the beginning of the SNES's life) have been discovered through reverse engineering the games to do some very stupid stuff regarding sprites. The SNES, unlike virtually every other system ever made, has its sprite data across two tables, one being 512 bytes and the other being 32 bytes (which was, admittedly, a really stupid design choice). Each sprite uses 4 bytes in the first table, and 2 bits in the second table. The first table has 8 of the x-coordinate bits, while the second table has one. Instead of making one table in software and going through a routine that later divides it up, developers would, for every time a sprite needed to be manipulated (basically whenever anything would move), get the data needed from both tables, convert it into something useable (put the 9th x-coordinate bit after the 8 from the other table), do whatever, convert it back, then put the data back in whatever table it belongs. This requires multiple unnecessary AND and OR intructions, and lots and lots of bitshifts, and considering you may need to do this as much as 128 times a frame (objects, like Donkey Kong in DKC are actually made of multiple sprites), it amounts to being hella slow. You could argue this is about development time, but it's actually so much faster, from both from a programming and processing perspective, that I have no idea why this was done in the first place. Sorry for the essay...

@noop9k6 жыл бұрын
Drew Sebastino if you call 68000 16-bit then you really have to call 65816 8-bit :) Anyway, don’t forget that 68000 has many 32-bit registers and more powerful instruction set, while 65816 has to do more memory accesses also due to inability to hold many temporary values in registers. Via 8-bit bus.

Axelay was without a doubt one of the best SNES Space Shoot Em Ups with energetic music, superior graphics, and an excellent mixture of vertical and horizontal scrolling. Only weakness with the game is that your ship can take multiple laser based damage without losing a life, but get hit with one missile and you lose a ship. Since when do missiles cause more damage than a laser beam? Phalanx is one that I hated the most due to the poor packaging, especially the man wearing a Fedora Hat playing a banjo.

Most Super Nintendo/Famicom shmups are indeed average at best (I’d say the same for the NES/Famicom, most shmups are average there too) despite a few standouts above the crowd. You’re better off getting your shmup fix with the Genesis/Mega Drive and TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine. I agree on that. But you would be better off getting your FG fix on Super Nintendo than on the Genesis (although only one game is better than its SNES counterpart, Mortal Kombat. Why is that such a big deal?) or TurboGrafx-16 (any super awesome anime fighter that exists on the Mega Drive or PC Engine? There’s plenty on the PlayStation line of consoles which includes 1, 2, 3 and 4 but the same has yet to be said for 5, I’m dying for a Yugioh fighter on PS5). But better yet, you’d get a much better fighting game fix on the Sega Saturn and PlayStation (and beyond) than all systems of the previous generation thanks to the genre’s evolution of gameplay and more balancing of the characters which resulted in pretty much being nothing wrong with the gameplay in years to come and J-fighters (Japanese fighting games because Japanese role-playing games having an acronym so why not fighting games? J-fighter or JFG) being perfect in the modern age. You should do a video on every fighting game on the Super Nintendo. Enough talking about fighting games. I do have to disagree on what you have to say on the two Darius games, I kinda enjoy them. Super R-Type does need some improvement patches on it (me personally I’m not bothered by slowdown at all but for all you speed snobs out there, there exists SA-1 or so called speed hacks), checkpoint or a quote-on-quote more forgiving version of it same thing with R-Type III. Oh how I wish there were that. I just fucking LOVED Cotton 100% when I first booted it up and I did not want to stop playing it. Macross is awesome too. I want to play U.N. Squadron and such. Shoot ‘em ups tend to be pretty good and have a reputation for that and such just like with modern day Japanese fighting games.

I didn't know the SNES had so many shmups. I thought I'd have to get a Turbo Grafx 16 or X68000 or even a....a Genesis.
@gameplayfirst-ger7 жыл бұрын
Average Genesis shmups beat almost every game on that list.

@@gameplayfirst-ger name a game on the Genesis that has all the elements he talks about that work on Space Megaforce - it is a work of art.

i have a copy of Super Nova where you automatically die every time at one level. 99% sure it is bugged LOL

Totally agree with Super Aleste being right up there, along with U.N Squadron, and Parodius Da!/Non-Sense Fantasy for me personally as the Top 3.

Many players get the impression that all vertical or horizontal 2D shoot ‘em ups are the same because of how repetitive the gameplay is and how overused the mechanics are. My personal favorite is 怒首領蜂 - DoDonPachi.

Every time I see Space Megaforce, I reminded of how great it is and why I'm an idiot for ever trading it in to the local retro shop. Damnit! Good list, though. I've been watching a lot of your videos lately, they're well done. I've even added a few games to my wanted list after watching some of them. :)

Biometal was really popular at my school because of the soundtrack by 2 Unlimited, also i used to rent Scrambled Valkirye a lot, great music, action and level design. Except for the cave level, fuck that level.

R-Type 3 is by far the best shooter for the system. Space Megaforce I found boring. Levels are too long and its too easy. Genesis and Turbo Grafx / Duo has most of the good shooters of that era.

His only complaint listed in this video was that R-Type III was "hard as hell". Shoot, he should try R-Type II (arcade). In that game, you don't get the broken cyclone force blue powerup and hyper wave cannon. The blue power up of the shadow force is also very devastating if all four lasers land. The hardest part of any of the R-Type games is the bosses, but you cut through those like a hot knife through butter here. I've never played Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie, but it looks like a good game. Firepower 2000 is a good shooter for the SNES, but I could never get very far due to there being no continues, which is made worse by the fact the levels are also too long, not unlike Space Megaforce.

MrBipson Axelay is honesty a very overrated shooter.

Drew Sebastino Axelay has really great graphics and music. The rest isn’t so good.

Graphics and music are at least 50% of what's important with these scrolling fire spam games in the first place though. Then maybe 30% game balance and 20% intrigue. They're pretty crap games in general, to be honest, but they're still fun to play now and then, which is the point.

Nice video. SNES/SFC has some great shmups. Glad you gave praise to Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie! It's hands down my favorite shmup ever, and one of my all time favorites of any genre on any system. It blows me away.

UN Squadron is the only one of these games that I own. I have 80 SNES games and kinda missed out on it, having purchased my first SNES after I got the brand new N64. Shoot 'em ups are cool but, when I was a kid I was always more interested in beat 'em ups, platforms and then later fighting games. I also liked sports games when I was a kid, although I don't care much for them now. I kind of had an ignorant view on the genre like you stated in this video. I thought they were all the same. I had the same ignorant view on RPG's until I started playing Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic. At that time I realized I had passed up on many great gaming experiences due to my youthful ignorance. Now, I have a number of shoot 'em ups for NES and a few on Game Gear and I have many RPG's, to be played... someday. Love the channel, SNES Drunk. Always good content from you.

Very nice coverage of the SNES shooters. I'm glad I found this channel a few months ago, even if it took quite some time. Also, Super R-Type...ugh. I could never get into that whole series because THAT was my first game from it. The first time I could actually LIKE the blasted series was R-Type Final. The newer games still kick my ass, but at least there making one mistake isn't potentially 3-5 minutes of setbacks.

Aero Fighters, Strike Gunner, Space Megaforce, Gradius 3, Raiden Trad. Honorable mention, Darius II, but even SMS version plays better. SNES port kinda lulls me, then throws a cheap shot from behind, making it still interesting to play.

I don't get the recent obsession people seem to have with Space Megaforce. To be fair, it WAS one my favourite shooters in the early 90s. It got decent reviews in the UK magazines at the time. And its definitely better than Axelay, which got more attention, and both R-Types, which were more well known. But I would 'only' rate it as a top 5 SNES shoot em up. Gradius 3 is more fun to play. Starfox is more original. But none of these come close to the absolute end-boss of SNES shooters, UN Squadron, which is in a whole different league. For me that is the clear best and most underated SNES shooter. The level design in UN Squadron is just perfect, difficult but fair, with amazing bosses. The graphics and sound go together to create an epic atmosphere. There's a lot of variation, short levels and longer levels and there's a genuine learning curve as you get better at avoiding bullets. It's a great challenge on hard and "gamer" too. I think UN squadron has aged a lot better than Space Megaforce, which I always find is not as great as I remember it. Maybe I just over-played Space Megaforce back in the day. I play it now and it just seems to go on forever. Each to their own I guess!

I remember specifically avoiding Space Megaforce back in the day and now I'm pissed off at myself because I never played it. I did have Super R-Type, Gradius III and Axelay though. Axelay is underrated as hell. AMAZING graphics for a 30 year old game. I disagree about Darius Twin as well. It's not as good as those others I mentioned but it's fun and looks and sounds unique. It's good enough that I'd recommend people at LEAST give it a try..
