I know Tim Burton didn’t direct the Nightmare Before Christmas, but it feels weird having a Tim Burton ranking without mentioning this movie
@SeanChandlerTalksAbout
@SeanChandlerTalksAbout 8 күн бұрын
Yeah I kind of debated what to do there. I very intentionally did not include it. It doesn't sit well with me that the actual director is forgotten and his film is credited to Burton. So including it in a director ranking felt like I'd be perpetuating the miscrediting. I debated saying something at the beginning. But I figured anyone passionate about Burton's filmography would also know that he didn't direct it. I even joked to a friend that I'm probably going to get a number of comments about it.

@@SeanChandlerTalksAboutI respect that a lot. A lot of people think Tim Burton directed nightmare before Christmas because he produced it and wrote the story but Henry Selick deserves that credit because he also made coraline which is amazing

@@RyanCMcD First of, correct. Second, when I do these rankings, I rewatch all of the movies unless I've already watched them for a video within the last 2 years. So for this Burton ranking, I watched I think 15 of his movies within the last 6 weeks. The remaining 5 I had previously watched for other rankings (Planet of the Apes, Wonka, Disney Live action). So if I were do that ranking, I would watch all 52 of them. Third, the reason it's an unlikely video for me to create is actual a variation of that statement. I highly doubt ANY OF MY VIEWERS have seen all 52 of them. I would guess some sort of RANKING of his most ICONIC films might work.

I personally love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I’ve honestly never been a huge fan of the original 70’s film. It just looks so cheap and was made with basically no respect for Roald Dahl’s original book. In fact, most of it was written and changed behind Dahl’s back. As a diehard fan of the book, I love how mostly accurate Burton’s version is. It also just has a better visual identity to it. The factory is much more interesting to look at. I also like that the bad kids aren’t just obnoxious stereotypes. I can’t stand any of the kids in the original, and not in the intended way lol. This was also a passion project by Roald Dahl’s widow to make an adaptation that would have pleased Dahl. (Btw, when you brought up the Oompa Loompa songs, they actually aren’t copying the 70’s movie. Those songs are also in the book. And the 2005 songs have lyrics ripped straight from the source material.

Burtons film is an attempt to make a story for a product that never really had one. The book is just chaos there's no real story there it's a representation of dream logic. In order to make a live action big budget version you have no choice but to create some type of actual story line. The Burton version is a good fine blockbuster it's not a bad movie it's just genaric in it's plot.

Love that I just stumbled onto this, and you have a new subscriber. I love film, and we're clearly the same age (either the same year or a year older, I was 10 just about to turn 11 when Batman Returns came out). Excellent ranking, even though I've probably only seen about half of this list. Your number one choice is nostalgically perfect. I definitely had Pee-Wee, Beetlejuice, Batman and Edward Scissorhands all on VHS as a kid, but I get why you didn't want to re-watch ES for so long. I haven't seen it in years myself. I do prefer Batman Returns to the original, but they're both great. Big Fish makes me cry every time. I remember seeing Sleepy Hollow at a pre-screening at Lincoln Center in NYC the fall of my freshman year of college and I couldn't believe that weird whimsical Tim Burton made an R-rated movie where a baby got killed. You brought back so many great memories with this and I can't wait to watch more of your film content! Edit: you just made me go watch the opening credits for Pee-Wee's Great Adventure and wow that score still kills it! Takes me back to childhood even though I re-watched it for the first time during Covid. Danny Elfman is to Burton what Bernard Herrmann was to Hitchcock.

This was a really well done and genuinely passionate and informative discussion about Tim Burtons filmography that supplied more nuanced insights compared to the wide variety of talking heads within the KZbin space chattin about cinema. Your analysis throughout the video really struck me personally in a lot of areas because you and I share a lot of the same opinions. I’ve been a huge admirer of the guy for most of my life through his iconic work because he’s carried a profound voice and style that is almost instantaneously recognizable and inspiring to so many people that’s powerfully stood the test of time, which speaks for itself and rarely belongs to a lot of filmmakers. And clearly, there was a significant low point as of late in his career thats disenchanted me as a fan, which may sound like a selfish perspective, but I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one feeling it. I was really rooting for him to somehow inevitably pull himself outta the shit. Most of his recent films came off as totally uninspired, and generic pay check gigs that any random filmmaker could’ve made and it seemed like he lost his touch and or wasn’t able to produce multiple films as he intended. Which ironically, wound up being the exact same studio cesspool that notoriously chewed his ass up whole and spit him out back when he was first coming up. They watered down his vision and sadly diluted his voice into obscurity like a fart in the wind. Glad to say, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice felt like an integral return to form and I really hope that this film acts as the catalyst that paints a positive road ahead for him.
