7:52 fun fact! for the 2010 season, the williams F1 team actually worked on a flywheel-based hybrid system that would use the engine to spin up a flywheel, and then use the momentum of the flywheel to deploy extra power at the push of a button. however, this version of "KERS" was abandoned and replaced by a more conventional battery-powered KERS system once KERS was re-introduced by the F1 regulations for the 2011 season.

Fun fact about mechanical batteries, they used to be implemented in bus systems. Some buses had massive flywheels that would power the wheels via a generator and when they made their stops, they'd have rails connected to the top to spin the flywheel via the generator they're attached to. It's kinda like how hybrid cars have motors that double as generators with regenerative braking, except it's generators that double as motors when stopped at a designated bus stop
@nate.3465
@nate.3465 Жыл бұрын
Hi, mechanic here. Your description of a flywheel is just a bit off, but close! You most likely described a harmonic balancer. The purpose of a flywheel to me, is similar to what you described, but it connects the engine, to the rest of the power train. The harmonic balancer is more to prevent the engine from vibrating too heavily, and is used to keep the engine, in harmony with itself. Maybe a little knit-picky but i think the distinction of how much a flywheel actually changes a car is a good thing to those who may not be as familiar to cars or engines. Thank you.
@edwardking9359
@edwardking9359 9 ай бұрын
They did in fact accurately describe a flywheel, because that is the purpose of a flywheel in any piston engine, whether combustion or steam. A harmonic damper is meant to counteract the forces of each piston stroke, whereas a flywheel is intended to keep the output shaft rotating smoothly between piston strokes. In cars, it's the clutch or torque converter that connects the engine to the transmission. I can understand the mistake, though, because those are usually mounted to the flywheel.

Basically, with a 250kg flywheel you need to rev up the engine, put to neutral once you reach the desired speed so the wheels aren't connected and you can properly brake, then anytime you want more speed you shift back into the correct gear for the speed you're going at, then shift into what you want. It's a curious way to drive a car.

This is actually something you factor in on locomotives when calculating the brake properties. The rotors in the electric motors weighs tons and spin at relatively high rpm's, so you add a few tons to the actual weight to get the "dynamic weight".

At 32 Kg, if you rev the engine just a little and engage the fourth gear directly, the car WILL jump ahead instead of stalling. Also, the heavier the flywheel is, the more gyroscopic effect it have, making it harder to turn, just as you have noticed. At 1024 Kg, the engine at idle, hold the clutch, get in fifth gear, release the clutch and you are going.

What’s actually funny is that a lot of luxury car manufacturers before the 1940s (especially Rolls Royce and Bentley) would actually use 100-120 kg fly wheels on their 8+ cylinder inline engines to improve felt vibration and improve at speed handling, but at the cost of as you found out, acceleration and braking. (Typically if you had to break suddenly in one of those at speed, it was usually in your interest to throw it into neutral and wait for the engine to settle after you stopped.)

If you increase the inertia of the flywheel and the power of the car enough, you can actually flip your car over when revving. It'll just start spinning if you floor it.

This video reminded me that Automation doesn't have flywheels as part of engine design. Could be interesting to learn real-world tradeoffs like a heavier wheel having smoother idle, easier throttle management at speed so you don't have to be precise with the gas pedal but the cost is reduced throttle response, reduced economy due to needing more throttle to overcome the weight, etc. Other impacts would be weight added toward where the engine is mounted as well as the potential to have brake fade problems due to how much more energy the brakes have to absorb to bring the car to a stop at higher speeds. [!] The flywheel's weight is reducing throttle response and sportiness. Consider reducing flywheel weight. or [!] The idle state of the engine is rough, reducing drivability and comfort. Consider increasing flywheel weight.

Flywheels as batteries are actually a thing. Busses have been using them for many years. They use power from breaking to spin them up and then use that energy to accelerate again. The Nissan GTR LM Nismo racecar also used a flywheel based hybrid system, but it wasn't really designed for a 24h race and kept failing. Unlike the extra heavy flywheels Muye was using those systems usually use much lighter flywheels at higher rpms, often in a vacuum

Fun Fact! A car company (i dont remember which one) actually made a car (back when all cars were manual) with a big 16[?] Pound flywheel attached to the engine, so that you could, effectively, pop your car right back into fifth (or whatever) after stopping at a light. This car was recalled because of a slight issue. Basically, it turns out there's a lot of momentum and force stored in this massive flywheel, and if you were to, I dont know, get in a minor car accident... The flywheel, a giant steel disk, would escape from the vehicle and bounce merrily across the road, scything through cars as it went.
