it’s amazing to me how in the scene on the booze cruise boat so little is said but we can see the characters’ innermost thoughts just from their faces. it’s such a great jim and pam scene because we can see the conflict of whether to say something in jim’s eyes and the panic in pam’s when she realizes she might have to face her feelings.
@1mclv3 жыл бұрын
I'm actually surprised not many people are commenting about this scene. It is so great, as you said, not many words said, but the feelings of the characters were practically out there
@pershop49503 жыл бұрын
unfortunately unspoken feelings can also be misinterpreted. eg, if Jim says to Pam, "I got the feeling you like me so I wanted to confess to you". And Pam says "Oh I'm so sorry. You know that I'm with Roy. I'm sorry if I made you think I liked you and led you on. Please forgive me." yea, many people have dealt with that kind of misunderstanding also.
@Matt-ux8hh3 жыл бұрын
That scene is great. I think you nailed it on the head. Sometimes when less is said, more can be conveyed through emotion and facial expression. You can see it in Jim's eyes, he's dying to tell Pam how he truly feels, but how can he? She's engaged and he has GF. I think the likelihood of Pam reacting well to a confession of love was low and Jim knew that, and Pam, you're absolutely right, how can you confront those feelings knowing that you're engaged? In this case, though, she was able to run away haha. I would like to you leave with one final note. The Yagan word (appropriately spoken by the Yaghan people of Tierra del Fuego) "Mamihlapinatapai" is considered one of the world's hardest to translate, and roughly means, "a look shared by two people, each wishing that the other would initiate something that they both desire but which neither wants to begin." I think that word sums up that scene nicely.

Karen totally did not deserve to be treated like the third wheel but also.. my heart broke when Pam longed for Jim. We all know she was a timid, shy girl in the beginning of the show, couldnt even take a stand for herself, being constantly put down by Roy. So honestly, her just leaving Roy and getting with Jim in a heartbeat would've been very out of character for her. She wasnt bold enough to just back off of a god knows how long relationship. Plus she loved Roy too, it wasnt an abusive relationship, he was just uncaring. I totally get what she was going through.

Just want to point out that you can love someone and still be in an abusive relationship. I don't watch the show every day like some ppl so i can't quote details, but pam and roy's relationship was certainly unhealthy, if not borderline abusive from what i recall. But i agree with your main point about pam not recognizing she deserved better. It's really hard for ppl in relationships like that to break them off, and the vibes of comments that are blaming pam for 'jerking' jim around are really worrying me, no empathy for someone in a really tough position

@armargo7 ай бұрын
@@tommccarthy8092 Karen was objectively better for Jim, that’s just not who he wanted 🤷🏾♂️. The whole season 9 conflict occurred because of how different Jim and Pam saw life and Dunder Mifflin. Karen would not have held Jim back to be secure in monotony. What makes jim and Pam work is Jim’s willingness to make Pam happy no matter what even if he’s a little late to pick up on when his gestures are too big or too much. Pam was happy with a nice boring life and Jim wasn’t but Jim is happy with Pam so he made the sacrifice. Most of their relationship was Jim going against what Pam wanted. She didn’t want to be engaged before she finished school but he proposed because he couldn’t wait. He bought his parents house and Pam didn’t even like it, he jumped into the start up in Philly but Pam didn’t even want to leave Scranton. Pam didn’t realize how much she held him back until after a random conversation with Darryl and only then was she worried about not being right for him. Meanwhile Karen had Jim pushing for a better job in New York and part of the reason he didn’t get it was because he just couldn’t get over Pam.

I have also long had the feeling that Karen was the one who wouldn't let Jim go to Pam's art show. (Probably in a passive aggressive way), and you can tell from Jim's expression on the beach that that had been torturing him. In general, Karen wouldn't let Jim be friends with Pam, because she regarded Pam as competition. Now, she was kind of right about that... but the way she acted about the situation only made it more clear that she was the wrong girl. And Pam was the right one.

I think the reason why Karen was so disliked is because of how LIKABLE she is. She wasn’t the stereotypical mean girl who had it out for Jim’s original love interest. In our eyes Pam felt like the victim of sorts but Karen wasn’t a villain she was more of an innocent bystander. & It would’ve been too easy to make Karen unpleasant which is why it was so hard for people to accept her in my opinion. She was a real threat. The trope of the sought after man being with a witch is a dead give away to the audience that she isn’t gonna stick around for very long & it’s unsettling when it’s the opposite. It made the love story better & made the stakes higher for sure.

Jenna plays the role so well, the little gestures, mannerisms of the character's personality; the way Pam gets little boosts of confidence but is still shy. Love her so much. I wish they dragged out Jim and Pam's wedding and showed us more cuteness and more of their relationship away from being at work, but then it wouldn't be called "the Office" if it was too pulled away from scenes happening in the actual office 😅
@Jafes20112 жыл бұрын
Whenever Pam has to lie about something that's important to her she often shakes her head involuntary like she's protesting against her own words. Like on 6:39 she calls Cathy "super nice" and says that "Cathy and Jim are so cute together" - and immediately shakes her head, so in fact she hates Cathy and doesn't like seeing her with Jim. But she nods when she says that the car is adorable, so that's her genuine opinion.

I think Pam probably always loved Jim too, but she may not have truly realized it for a long time. When it became apparent that Pam had something deeper with Jim, she was terrified because it meant she was going to have to take a leap of faith and end things with Roy after years of being with him. Anyone who has been in that situation knows that it’s very tough and it’s not a spontaneous decision. For Pam, it took her a while to finally decide to leave Roy for good and finally tell Jim how she felt. I think that’s completely natural and acceptable. I’ve been in a VERY similar situation and it can be extremely confusing at first, but what matters is that clarity slowly reveals itself to you. It takes time to understand your feelings and process declarations of love like that. It takes time (especially for someone like Pam, who starts out being very soft spoken and sort of a “pushover”) to gather enough bravery to become independent and decide they want real change. Therefore, it’s exciting when they finally do make such changes. That’s why one of my favorite episodes is the one where Pam walks on the coals on the beach and then finally tells Jim the truth about her own feelings. It means so much to me personally, as does the entirety of Jim and Pam’s relationship. I know that a lot of people get angry at Pam for turning Jim down at first, but I think it’s a matter of trying to understand the confusing and potentially scary (in an emotional sense) situation she was in. I don’t know if it’s just because I understand her and relate deeply to her, but Pam’s character and story means a lot to me and I thought I should just throw that out there.
@jerilane44202 жыл бұрын
I agree 100 % with what you wrote. I think many people on the internet have such cut and dried reactions to how Pam should have acted. They just think you just blow it up and go to the person who you seem to love more. Pam and Roy have been together a long time and Pam's mom likes Roy as shown in a deleted scene. Its not like he was a one night stand. He has been in her life a long time and although not officially married they are like a married couple. It takes a huge amount of courage and selfishness to blow that up for another guy that you joke around with and have a great connection with at work. It is a huge risk although it seems so easy looking at the chemistry they have at work. This happens all the time at workplaces where people will say this is my work wife or husband. The audience only see the Pam and Jim connection but havent seen the Pam and Roy moments when they started dating. Pam is not a user as many think she is - she likes the attention Jim gives her as he makes her drab job so much better. This dynamic happens all the time in the workplace! I can see why Jim falls in love with her so easy but what Pam feels at first is friendship that she loves as much as romantic love. This is why Pam and Jim are such an epic couple. The friendship is so cute and then the love comes as a natural progression. They had to lose each other to realize they couldnt be apart and be truly happy. It took both of them great courage to declare their love and the timing was off for sure but in the end the writers had the right idea. I think many people settle and years later connect with someone that is perfect for them. That doesnt mean you run to that person and leave what you have. It just isnt that simple! And it isnt realistic. Jim provided a contrast for Pam as what her life could be and after he left I think she realized that Roy wasnt going to change and she was going to find her Jim. Nice that he moved back so that she got the original!

They are so attracted and fond of each other's company that how much ever they try dating newer ppl, it still can't match that level of connection and bond and when they get even slightest chance of being with each other they don't miss. I think that is shown by jim and pam .It was nobody's fault. Jim and pam always felt comfortable and easy and their chemistry had always been palpable. It was not Pam's fault either. I dunno. I've always felt like Pam was a classic example of a person with severe anxiety. When this show came out, it wasn't common or in-style to be explicit about mental illness, but, as a person who deals daily with severe anxiety, I relate to Pam immensely, and find it extremely disheartening to see so many people reiterating the "you would get over it if you cared" mentality that vilifies so many anxiety sufferers. I can't help but find the general public's demonizing of some of her behaviors, most of which revolve around intense fear to new or scary situations, to be a great example of how many people with anxiety are treated. As though their fear, and the less talked about agitation that can come with it from overstimulation in those scenarios, is a choice and they could just "get over it" if they really wanted to. Pam explicitly aches over not being the sort of person she believes Jim deserves. She wishes she was more spontaneous, less fearful, more vibrant in unfamiliar situations, but also, the show does a great job of making it clear that Pam needs to ultimately be accountable for her own problems, even though they do not, and should not, define her as a person. I think the show brings her to task by the end, showing her (and us) that many of the situations where she'd thought she was purely the victim were not the case. As much as Roy was in the wrong, Pam chose to stay with him. And no, I will not tolerate the whole "she was holding him back" line. No person can hold another grown adult back without their consent. A person can only do that to themselves. Which, I believe, is the ultimate lesson Pam learns. But, I approved that the show never truly vilified her for her anxiety, and neither did Jim. Although concerns about their relationship did come up, which were entirely warranted on Jim's part, he never claimed she was an inherently bad person for being triggered by change. But, he also acknowledged that, although she's not a villain for it, she will end up missing so much that life has to offer because of it, and it's not his job to put his dreams on hold to accomodate the demands of her mental illness. So, long story long, I think watering down the struggles Pam goes through with herself as "not being supportive" or "bitchy" or "demanding" or "whiney" sort of miss the point. Pam, at least to me, is a realistic portrayal of a mental illness where they don't turn the sufferer into an absolute baby-angel, and show the real damage mental illness can cause to your own life and the lives around you. But, most importantly, it shows how progress is not linear, but if you take responsibility for your actions and put in the elbow grease, you can overcome the symptoms of that illness and lead a fulfilling life.
