Daenerys Targaryen in the final Season of Game of Thrones took a nose dive from empathetic merciful mhysa to Mad Queen. It's been one year since Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 5 The Bells and I still am mad at what was done with the character Daenerys Targaryen! In this video I will go over Daenerys Targaryen in the A song of Ice and Fire books, As well as the supposed foreshadowing that Daenerys would become a mad queen in the show! Almost all of the evidence used is show only evidence, It didn't make sense a year ago and it doesn't make sense today and every time I think about it I get mad all over again! I Stand by Daenerys Targaryen! The one true queen of Westeros, Mother of Dragons Breaker of chains! Thanks for Watching!

@@HK-gm8pe There are some people who probably didn't like when she came across as arrogant. That said she did a lot of good for a lot of people. So on balance she is positive to have around. Those who didn't like her may have been looking for excuses to even though the excuses don't excuse the season 8 nonsense. GoT is better if you just remove season 8. In Star Trek there is a mirror dimension where the personalities of the characters is different and usually more evil. Since they ignored long standing social traditions (season 2 showed us that bells don't means surrender) it makes it easier for me to say season 8 takes place in a mirror dimension detached from GoT.

They did the exact opposite of what they attempted to accomplish in Season 8. They made me hate the Starks and become a Targaryen loyalist for life. Thanks for the dragons now fuck off, you're not one of us. She sacrificed her armies and her dragons to save the North, who made it clear they did not appreciate her or respect her whatsoever. She was betrayed time and time again by her closest advisors. She told Jon exactly what would happen when he revealed his true identity and was absolutely correct. She deserved so much better. None of her behavior or past actions led up to or justified burning King's Landing after they surrendered.

Same and I never thought I would hate the Starks, but after season 8, the writers made it seem like they only cared about themselves and became even larger backstabbers than the Lannisters by betraying Daenerys so they can have control over Westeros. It's soo off from their characters well except for Sansa who was taught by Cersei how to manipulate and deceive others.

Love Daenerys. I hated the final season, can't re-watch the series because of season 8. I agree that they didn't always have this planned for Dany since the beginning because all we have to do is go back to season 7 finale, all the pregnancy foreshadowing was there!!! What really happened was that they switched roles between Cersei and Daenerys at the last minute in order to be unpredictable. Cersei was supposed to go mad queen after her miscarriage and Daenerys was supposed to be pregnant. Jaime was supposed to kill Cersei after she had went mad.

I was so upset when I saw how poorly they ended Daenerys' story because it's so off from her character who was always selfless and sacrificed literally everything for the people. Based on Daenerys' vision in the House of the Undying, it was probably foreshadowed for her to die and not win the Iron Throne, but her going "mad" as the reason for it, was not a wise decision by the writers.

Lena Heady said she shot a miscarriage scene that was supposed to air in season 7, and that it was her understanding that the miscarriage was to drive Cersei even further into madness, and we would've seen her worst yet. But it was scrapped and she didn't know why. That proves that D&D didn't have Dany's ending planned seasons ago. As you said it was supposed to be Cersei. They lied.

People don't seem to mention that in S6 in Vaes Dothrak, Daenerys wasn't there by her own design. It wasn't a situation she put herself in. Her choices were: 1. Flee with Daario and Jorah... and be ridden down and killed by the Dothraki (they're really good horsemen, you know?) 2. Stay and be raped to death 3. Turn the tables and end up in a far superior position I think in the books, she's going to end up in conflict with fAegon, and King's Landing will burn, but unintentionally. It'll give her a reputation that she'll have to fight against. She won't be "mad queen", but she'll have a reputation as such. She may even be the cause (or think she is) of the fires. It'll set up her inner conflict. After all "the human heart in conflict with itself is the only thing worth writing about."

It was a set-up and she was framed. It smelled like a set-up since season 7, when they did these convoluted plans, just to weaken her artificially and even out the chances... make it balanced. Normally, she would have taken KL immediately, but no, they had to take Casterly Rock and other detours, then the plan to get a wight... why would she need to do all that if Cersei was out of the picture? Then all the characters around her started repeating over and over and over: oh, I don't know about her... she's too temperamental... She actually comes to HELP in the north (she could have done that easily after taking out the Lannisters), Sansa is all like: she brought TOO MANY men + dragons... what do dragons eat? Gee! You'd think a stronger army is a good thing when it's on your side... Nope! Sansa-logic says no! Next time my country is called to war, we'll just send 1 guy... He's easy to feed! 😀 Then Euron keeps always surprising her army... again and again and again... and again... and again... "she kinda forgets" a lot... Oh, and he's a highly-trained sniper! And her fleet is apparently made of cardboard (not even real-life cannons could penetrate that easily through a ship's hull from that distance)... In E05 of course, they show us the children that are about to get fried in advance: "think of the children!" In an attempt at emotional manipulation. Then Hitler speech references in E06... of course like any cartoon villain, she wants to conquer the world (she never, ever, ever, ever expressed any such notion before, but here we are, this is what's happening, they kida forgot to foreshadow this one)... So yes, it was a set-up, not even a subtle one, gaslighting and emotional manipulation.

@@epicsandwich7194 Not sure about that...but yes, it makes sense. Bran only wanted to be the 3ER to get a better view of the battle at Winterfell... because he didn't do anything else with that power. And it would have been so easy to push him as King, if only he did something absolutely crucial to winning against the NK. Then Tyrion could have said: "he saved us all", "he led us in the battle" instead of "stories" and yes, he may not have been people's first choice, but at least it would have been solid argument to make him king (even though he said he couldn't be lord of anything... repeatedly)

@bella Richards what you say is absolutely true. 100% spot on. And that's why George RR Martin wanted Dany to be the crazed queen. Step back from favourite GoT characters / houses a moment... And I ask @GrayArea to do the same. Everything great powers do is fabulous. Let's cheer for all the great things they do... Until we suddenly realise they're doing it to the people we quite like. Dany WAS slighted by those In the North. But because they didn't show her the respect she deserved as she drank her Starbucks, that didn't mean they deserved to be next on her hitlist. And that's exactly the point of A Song of Ice & Fire. Nothing is black and white; there's a shed load of grey... And that's just from one person's viewpoint. Dany hadn't considered why Sansa was so worried about ANOTHER battle for the 7 Kingdoms. She just got angry when Sansa hadn't realised that she'd done foolish things for Jon's love. It reminded me of the Greek tale Jason & The Argonauts. Medea was a high borne priestess. She was the ruler's daughter... Yet she helped Jason conquer his trials and take the Golden Fleece from her people. Marrying him, having his children, she left her home, her father, her throne for love. Yet when Jason gets back home with the Golden Fleece, HE'S considered the hero and given the blessing to wed another princess. As @GrayArea debates the rationale for Dany being pissed and killing all the people that wronged her, you'd agree that Medea too had every right to be pi$$ed... ...so she slaughters her own children to hurt Jason. Dany overcame so much... By burning them f%%%ers to the ground. Her empathy is only evident cos it aligns to our way of thinking. But when her idea of empathy is to 'break the wheel' for all those oppressed in the North, like Medea killing her own kids, suddenly we realise this is wrong. George RR Martin wrote an epic. I don't think D&D told his story in the way he'd have wanted, but they definitely presented his vision to end the senseless battle for the Iron Throne. All that death, all that heartache, all that anger, all that despair. GoT is a tale to retell our children, and our children's children. When is 'all you've ever wanted' more important than all you've ever needed? The human race is a social race. We're people needing people. Instead of jumping on one side or another, let's find out more about what we have in common than just waiting to spot our differences. Cos in the wise words of Edwin Starr, "War... Uh! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing!" xxx

People always say that Daenerys only cares about the Iron Throne, but they forget why she wants it. Yes at first is cause it is her right, but as she goes through her journey her mind set changes she wants it cause she wants to change the world, as said in the series "we're going to leave the world a better place then we found it". Dany wants to make thigs better for the little people, she cares for those the high lords ignore. With the Iron throne she hopes to make a kingdom where the common folk are happy and fed, where pretty maidens can safely prance around the city, where children can laugh and play with out a care in the world. She is honestly the best Queen the Westerosi can hope for.

She actually killed and have been a tyrant ruler for the sake of making a better world, since when closing brotels, removing slaves home was a great thing? Slaves had life with their master and for some were way better than being liberated in the street without a thing to do or the energy and will to do. She clashed her way in, and didnt work! She havent done many compromise, reasonnable choices that would sold her reign, but instead took it like a mad person would do, and does it gives you power and rights, YES, but NOT respect and loves from people. Ok the slaves, called her Misa lol but what can you do with slaves that doesnt have many thing to help her, she kind of forget to liberate slave does not help them if you dont help them in the end. She was just a mist of hope and thats it to me. She should have spare the Tarly to show her clemence, but NO... bad decision she tooks. She should have spare them and let them reflect their choices, after the devastating battle she had done with the Lannister and Tarly. She could have been accepted, also, if she never was like BEND THE KNEE, all the time, may be people would have loved her more. If you dont show your respect for people, people wont respect you and proclaim you as leader. She was just the oposite of Jon Snow who always make decision in for other than himself and would put his life to help others. ALso he was not a dreamer of better places blablabla... he knew wars were innevitable, he knew some blood had to be spread, but would always avoid it if he could. Dany would desire to avoid blood, but her actions shows opposite all the time, especially when she tooks decisions on the spot, by her emotion...

@@Klondike877 ok so you're clearly pulling from the show, which as stated already is not Daenerys. In the books Daenerys doesn't slaves abandon the slaves she stays in Mereen for them cause she doesn't want them to be re enslaved the moment she leaves. While she wasn't doing great a first, she was learning through trial and error, and she eventually starts getting the hang of it. And Bruh read the books in a dance with dragons Dany pretty compromises with everything, she spends whole days sitting on a throne listening to her peoples complains and request until her back hurts, but she's uncompromising right??!! She re opens the fighting pits after a meeting with the gladiators, she let's some slave return to their masters with certain conditions, whether it be paynent, just treatment, etc. Btw I hope you were not trying to make a point as to why slavery is alright, yes a very few slaves had it good with their masters but most were treated inhumanely, they got brutally beaten, they were excessive worked without any pay or compensation, their women were raped, their children were taken from them and fucking crucified just to send a message to Daenerys, yes Daenerys 100% did the right thing by abolishing slavery. Btw Dany was loved by the people, what you're talking about is that bullshit from the show, which Daenerys would be welcomed and loved by the Targaryen loyalists in Westeros, they'll be super excited to see the last daughter of Valyria, the breaker of chains and the mother of dragons, hellooo Westeros was built on dragon back. If you think Daenerys war methods make her crazy then you must think people like Tywin, Stannis, Roberth, Rob Stark, Catelyn, Little Finger, Varys, Hound and Arya are fucking insane. Also why is it so crazy entitled when Dany ask people to bend the knee, bru she's giving them a choice, what would you expect her to do, let them go, so they can go back to their commanding officers and relay information, when Rob and Tywin ask people to bend the knee nobody says shit but when it's Daenerys she's entitled, she's crazy, the mad queen. Btw Stannis didn't even gave them the chance to join, he was straight up burning his captors as a sacrifice to a fire god that he doesn't really believe in because a fire witch told him to, that's some cult leader type of shit, now that is crazy behavior, but people ignore it. The books are written in points of view, so you literally read what they are thinking and Daenerys often thinks of making the world a better place.

I've already written something similar under another comment here but Dany was also very much ok with her husband and her people burning down entire villages and raping & killing hundreds of innocents. And in the books, she's even less bothered by it than in the show. She spoke up for exactly one person out of all the villagers her husband ordered to kill and later thought of herself to be a saint because of it. Are the actions of the Dothraki also a necessary evil? Apparently she thought so because she didn't love Khal Drogo or his lads any less because of it.

However, unlike her brother, that "demand" is backup by the understanding that the Westerosi aren't going to just hand it over just because she has a right and a claim. Dany is intelligent to know that she has to do a lot of politicking and play the game in order to "earn it" as Aegon I and Bobby B did when they won the right to rule by conquest - winning advantageous positions, making friends and allies from their former enemies, inspiring loyalty among the people who follow her, adopting (in Aegon I's case) Westerosi culture and ruling standards - which is what she was doing in Mereen as a test run - actually ruling as opposed to conquering and moving on; using Westerosi traditions (having a small council, abolishing slavery- which she was already doing but then further justified it in her rule because Westeros doesn't have slavery and their economy is able to function without it, so Mereern and the rest will have to adjust to their new world order Dany's rule brought). Whereas Viserys would have just taken the Dothraki over to Westeros and been like "Gimme the Throne! Because I am the Targaryan heir" and not understand *why* no one would be interested in following him/possibly turn on him/why Bobby B isn't getting off his throne and just giving it to him

@@martidodger7106 I think you're making a misrepresentation of Vyseris and the situation. You said that he was just gonna go to westeros and demand his place, but in fact the little we have of him, you have him directly talking with Illyrio(The guy that gave Dany the Dragon eggs), as asking if he was really sure that there were still many loyalists that would support him when he reached Westeros. So literally he was expecting to get the support of the people there, and he knew that he needed that support. And in fact that support, even though not as exagerated by Illyrio, in fact existed. In fact the support Dany earned in Westeros when she reached there: Dorne, The Reach and the Iron Island, was some of the support that it was expected from the start by Vyseris(In fact in the books, I'm not seeing her getting the support of the Reach). Just because Jorah said to Dany that Vyseris was daydreaming thinking that he would have support from westeros(proving again that he was expecting to get it), doesn't means Jorah was right. In fact Jorah knows way less about politics and "the game" than Illyrio and Varys(that was with Illyrio) and they were expecting that Vyseris reaching Westeros with a Dohtraki army would get the support of many houses and be able to topple the current rule. About Aegon I, he had to fight all his reign with the people of the faith and the people in general due to the Incest and poligamy. In fact, that problem continued way after his death. Also isn't like he adopted the Westerosi culture, but that he already had that culture, when his family changed to Dragon Stone, many generation before him, were already getting "Cultured" by westeros, for example since infancy Aegon I was from the faith of the 7. Bobby B winning, making friend and allies from his former enemies? Well, the only enemy that he made friend and made any real political sense was the Reach, and it wasn't even really him but Ned and Jon Arryn. And because the Reach was the strongest Kingdom already at that time. Dorne, he didn't even touched their grounds in his entire Reign, and almost got any contact with them, because he knew that it was his head that would be the result. It was again Jon Arryn that had to go talk to them, to avoing another war. Though, that wouldn't happen anyway. All the others were already his allies or were neutral. The rebellion was a collition with Vale-North-Riverlands-Stromlands, and in the end Westerlands(Lannisters) joined(they were neutral before). The Iron Islands were Neutral, and the enemies were The Kinglands(that were attacked by Lannisters, I would call that making friends of enemies), Dragonstone and surrounding Islands(The sisters), The Reach and Dorne. And all other houses that even in their respective allied kingdom decided to fight for the Crown, but read the books and see what happened to most of those houses, it wasn't certainly "making friends with enemies" either.

Can we talk about how the show made Euron and Cersei better allies than Daenerys and the North? The writing on this show was so bad that they made the “villains” better than the “protagonists.” Euron and Cersei never betrayed each other and they worked really well together. Cersei had NOTHING to offer Euron. The Iron Fleet gave Cersei all of her military wins & advantages. I don’t understand why the Ironborn didn’t just take King’s Landing in season 7. But nearly everyone on team Daenerys (after she brought her entire army & dragons North to fight for the Starks) were happy to betray her because they believed that Daenerys was insane based on absolutely nothing. Excellent analysis! 2 things that really bothered me regarding other characters' attitude towards her (besides the things I've seen discussed in this and other videos): 1. When Tyrion tells Jon, "everywhere she goes EVIL men die" and he says it like it's a bad thing... How? How is killing EVIL people (at least in the context of that world) a bad thing? It's like he doesn't know what EVIL means or like that specific qualifier isn't even there. And he even enumerates the different evil people she killed. She should receive a medal for that, not be called "mad" 2. When Arya pretty much tells Jon... "Yeah! We used her because we needed her! Now we don't need her anymore!" This is the moral character of the children of Ned Stark. THIS! This is what Ned Stark taught them. You'd think the girl that thought Aegon's sisters were heroes, that was smiling in E01 when she first saw Drogon, would actually like to at least talk to the Dragon Queen. Nope! They don't even exchange 2 words, but Arya hates her all the same... for no reason... other than because Sansa hates her... for no reason... Joffrey was right about them. The Boltons were right about them. The Lannisters were right about them. Roose Bolton and Walder Frey were heroes at the Red Wedding. The Starks sucked (and I had liked Sansa ever since season 1, since she threatened Joffrey when he was showing her Ned's head).

Gurrrl, I am with Daenerys AND you! Still salty at how they ruined 7 and 1/2 seasons of character development - and the legacy of the entire series - in order to subvert expectations. The apologists who say the signs of madness were there all along? They can kiss my grits because: Arya committed mass murder and wasn't considered mad; Tyrion committed mass murder (via wildfyre) and wasn't considered mad; Ned beheaded a young man (who he admittedly thought was mentally ill) and wasn't considered mad; Jaime pushed a child out of a window and wasn't considered mad; Tywin orchestrated the Red Wedding and the murders of Elia Martell and the Targaryen children and he wasn't considered mad; Robert ordered the assassination of Dany (as a child) and he wasn't considered mad; and Bronn admitted (to Tyrion) that he would slaughter a babe in its mother's arms for a fee and he wasn't considered mad. #IStandbyDaenerys

Right? How the hell are you supposed to "see the signs" that Daenerys was destined to go insane and go straight into Mega Hitler mode in the fact that she dealt ruthlessly, and even cruelly, with people who betrayed her or oppressed, enslaved and slaughtered innocents? Almost every person in this show deals with betrayal in horrible ways, what exactly is the tip-off that Dany was crazy but nobody else in the show was when they're doing shit more horrible than she ever did (up until season 8 of course)? People say "Well he/she was getting revenge because someone did them wrong somehow so that's fine". Well ok, I totally agree with that but I still don't understand why it's just desserts for the nobility of Westeros to rape and murder and torture their enemies AND their own families (for instance remember how Tywin Lannister had Tyrion's first wife gang-raped by his soldiers while Tyrion was forced to watch, and he did this to his OWN CHILD just for the crime of loving someone he didn't approve of), but it's inherently evil when Dany does the same. Why is it wrong only for her to also avenge herself and her loved ones? It's so weird and it's total nonsense, the hate-on a lot of people have for her. Why is she held to blame for the actions of the Dothraki (often used to basically claim she was a terrible person for being married to Drogo, as if she had any choice in the matter. Even though she definitely was having a positive influence on him like when he called her to explain taking the slave women into her protection instead of letting them continually be raped and abused). She stood up to Drogo and spoke out about the treatment of these women and claimed her authority over the Dothraki as co-equal to the Khal. And what do you know, he gently asked her to explain the situation and he LISTENED to her and admired and respected her reasoning and took her side in the matter, putting an end to the raping. Of course that pissed a bunch of them off but the fact is Dany was having a positive influence on the "savages" she was sold to. She would probably have made a lot more progress on that front but she and Drogo were only married for a year before he died and she had to start her mission to take the throne without his help. Sorry for the novel length rant here but it still annoys the shit out of me even after all this time.

tbh when i was watching episode 5 and she had the look, i thought "oh she's going to burn the red keep" which would have made sense. going after cercei directly. and it would have been a morally grey decision because of the civilians cercei had surrounded herself with, but it would have been understandable. now some of my theory on how the rest of the city burns: while doing going at the red keep 1) daeny accidentally ignites a stash of wild fire under the keep, and in a chain reaction it ignites all the stashes in the city one after the other like a green exploding domino. or 2) spiteful cercei commands someone to ignite them because she knows she lost and she wants to leave dany nothing but ashes to rule. maybe the people, who dont know the situation, blame the fire on the foreigner with the dragon, who knows. but dany would never intentionally hurt innocents when it's not necessary. even in her anger, the vengeance would be directed at cercei and the ones surrounding her. this would also fit the speech emilia gave in a behind the scenes footage (that hbo unlisted cuz it contradicts those two fucks) i think dumb and dumber purposefully kept the skipt and stuff vague and did not reveal the full extend to which the town would be burning. some streets? yes. oh dany is getting ready to burn something? probably the red keep and some surrounding area she needs for access. nope, just anything in her way, even doing a few extra leaps. just see the difference in emilia's behind the scenes interviews after filming (when post production hasnt happened yet) and her at the premiere after actually seeing the season. they did both dany and her so dirty. she did the best to work with the shitty outline dumb and dumber gave her.

I also don’t think that automatically means she suffered from the Targaryen madness, like her psychotic father did. I had so much hope...but this is Game of Thrones. Happy endings don’t exist here 😩 Plus, I understand the Northerners are hella suspicious of outsiders (and they have their reasons), but I really cringed whenever Sansa interacted with Daenerys. 😬 They didn’t have to be friends, but there should have been more understanding. They both have their own experiences, but damn. Sansa could have been a bit more kind. Js 🤷🏽‍♀️

The "Targaryen madness" that his talked she has, but is something that she has since the first season. That what is funny. The Targaryen madness had most to do with them having "dragon dreams" and believing that with fire somehow being able to "turn" into dragons. She had those dreams and that was what took her to go into the fire and hatch the dragons. And supposedly she still has those dreams, the ones with Quaithe. And that is why she knows things from the "future". Note that her father madness, that people talk about(nobody other than Jaime, Brienne and the alchemists know about his plain to engulf Kings Landing in fire) is something totally different from the "Targaryen" madness, although they in someway correlate them(Like when Barristan said that there was always a line between madness and genius in the Targaryens and that Danys father was a brilliant men that started to go more the other way).

Note that Rhaegor never was said to be a genius. Mainly because he never had any leading roles. His father was the king for many years and had many decisions to rule(Though some said that it was Tywin that was behind all of that, :P). Not only did they spit in the face of fans but they wanted us to believe something that didn't make sense. Something that any logical and intelligent person could not believe could happen as a result without any significant amount of time to properly show the development of how Danaerys descended, if she would even descend into madness. I think your analysis is thorough and logical and it does show the errors that the writers did and wanted for us to swallow like a bunch of imbiciles that can't tell the difference between a good and a bad story.

Another reason for my disbelief in this “foreshadowing” is that ultimately the show was cut SHORT, VERY much so. There was enough book content and material for several more seasons. No, this final episode was not carefully Planned and foreshadowed. It was a grossly rushed short coming.

The show artificially decides when killing is good and bad. Normally it's when dany kills her enemies it's bad. D&d justified it with examples like dany letting her brother die, who'd been abusing her for her entire life and threatened to kill her and her baby. For every act of cruelty there's another benevolent action she's taken like locking up her dragons after one child died. Danaerys fits nicely into the morality of the show but apparently she's all "no TV no beer make dany go crazy" at the end. Arya killed two people, baked them in a pie, served it to their father, then slit his throat and watched him choke on his blood, then carved his face off, then put it on and used it to poison the rest of the family and many soldiers and other people and calmly walked through the bodies. Where's the mad assassin Arya? That's way more chilling than ANYTHING Dany did in the entire show

But relating both things and saying that people don't like Dany because she's a woman and use that example as a reason is wrong. In fact most people that hate Dany are book readers, and has mostly do with Meeren and how she dealt with that situation. Also to do with her path until now. For example the fact that she got everything she got from Illyrio, and then gets more by "stealing" from him. They were in the end of their ropes, basically a little more and Dany would end as a prostitute, and probably Vyseris as well. Vyseris was even called the beggar King, because he had to become a literal beggar to put food in their mouths, that is one thing that the TV show could have shown, and would explain more why Vyseris was like how he was, and why Dany understood him, even though he discharged his frustration on her. Basically they were at the end of the line and that Illyrio gave them everything. He even arranged Dany marriage, Put Jorah in her care, gave her the Dragon Eggs, Sent Barriston Selmy to her, and sent Ships with a crew and valuable merchandize to pick her up from Quarth. In the books he even send the Golden Company, Griffin and Young Griffin to her, and is even him that sends Tyrion to her. She even says that he is her biggest benefector. You can see in the scene with Viserys that it isn't that she's cold or heartless that she didn't cry. Not a couple of minutes before his death , she was obviously emotional, afraid for him and trying to calm him and save his drunk stupid ass. And what does she get for it? He holds a fucking sword to her stomach and threatens to murder her. After he threatens the baby you can see her disbelief that he went there and she realizes as long as Viserys lived, she and her child were in danger. So you very clearly can see her shutting down emotionally so she won't feel tempted to give in to him playing on her sympathy and forgive him this time, like she'd done a hundred times before. Threatening to cut her open, kill her baby and take her away from her husband who was madly in love with her and her protector and defender - was the last straw. He was warned not to fuck with her again (In a previous scene where he beat her and berated her for having the fucking audacity to invite him to a feast and give him a gift), or he'd be done for, and then he chooses to do THIS. And people think Dany is the bad guy here? All she wanted was to have a good relationship with her only relative (she thought at the time they were the last of the line) and she constantly tried to appease him and obey him and she just couldn't understand why he hated her so much. That was over when he pulled his dumbass stunt. He committed suicide with his insane rage and gigantic ego, this was not even a murder in my eyes.

People pointing to her not feeling anything when Viserys died doesn't work as Mad Queen foreshadowing. At the time, the audience cheered her on because they sympathised with her finally getting her own back against her abuser. But then later on people tried to retcon this as an early sign of future madness. Bullshit. Are these people saying they wouldn't react the same way if in Dany's situation? Moreover, Dany's reaction in the book is more nuanced. Despite everything her brother did to her, she feels mixed emotions about his death because she remembers good moments with him and she recognised that he still raised her (poorly but he was all she had.) Her reaction in the book to Viserys's death shows that Dany, even at that young age and despite the abuse she suffered, had an emotional intelligence that even some adults lack. Our Queen was done dirty, folks.

In the end the decisions made by writers and showrunners in Sesaon 8 feel ...misogynistic. It feels like "women are emotionally to unstable to reign", despite of giving Sansa the North, by having mad queens who "are only power-hungry psychos" in the end or emotional wrecks - put aside having other mad characters like Joffrey. The "twist" of turning Daenerys mad is just bad writing and additionally leaves a sour taste on the tongue, especially because it does not make sense. Her "mad deeds" like executing Sam's father and brother for example is seen as mad, however other characters do this all the time. For example and most importantly: Jon does it. He executes those who killed him, including a kid out of vengeance, not because it's about order within the Nights Watch, that these people threaten Jon's position and the discipline within this brotherhood but out of rage because after he kills them he quits his job... And that's fine? Understandable but he is not been called out to be crazy. It could be seen as madness as well, I guess... But hey. They killed him. It's okay. And Daenerys executes the Tarly's for political reasons not because she wants it. But that's a sign of madness for the showrunners? The same guys who said "She (Daenerys) isn't mad. She is not her father"? Okay.

Good way to go through the one of the double standards. Technically the poisoning came after the throat slitting but still a good way to put things.

Thank you ever so much, Greyarea, for such a complete , well read and heartfelt analysis of Dany T! I have always said that Dany had every right to be ANGRY over her mistreatments but she was never MAD! There’s a huge ass difference! Thank you for setting the record straight concerning our beloved sister Dany! We love you for that! Please stay strong and safe!

I think losing Young Griff from the books derailed a lot of story arcs, especially for Dany and Varys.

This was a hilarious yet informative commentary, especially for someone who’s just discovered the series this year (purposefully).Just finishes the series and now ready to buy the books. Everyone says the show went left from the books.

Dany burns slavers who abuse people. But bed beheads a deserter who fears walkers like any normal person would, but that good. Robert Baratheon killed a man cuz he took the woman he loved even though she never loved him, but that good. Like I how do you justify this. HOW!!???

A lot of this nonsense about Daenerys comes from the fact that she is a woman. If she was a man, she would have been called ruthless and heroic.

I can't remember who said it first but I'm also of the view that if King's Landing burns down it would be a mistake that happens in the chaos of an attack on the city guard - Dragons and hidden caches of wildfire are a dangerous mix, all it takes is a single spark...

I couldn't agree more! #IStandByDaenerys forever and always. I was soooo let down by how D&D wrote the whole last season, but especially how they handled Dany. It was disgraceful! Don't even get me started about Bran the Broken....PFFFFT.

I agree, for some seasons people had been saying that she would go mad. They never showed it though, maybe the Tarlys, but you say even that is justified. When that happened people were saying she's going mad. This has been said already even in these comments, people like Tywin, who committed genocide or even Aegon, they committed terrible things, but yet they are never called mad. Why is that? Because she's a woman?

Well, Dragon Demands showed that the original plan was wild fire going off in the city destroying it not her and it also has it clear that the idea originally was only her attacking Red Keep which Cersei was in with hostages. It clear D and D wanted to make a point about ‘liberation theology’ as being bad because D and D are elite brats , certainly Benioff.

Great video Gray. This has me searching for more I stand with Daenerys video posts. I actually really feel for pretty much all the actors - season 8 was a disservice to pretty much every character. Please do a Justice for Missandei video. Her death was a nail in the coffin of the show for me

i stood by Daenerys since the very beginning, and i still do. i knew she would either win in the end or at least be one of the two finalists.and she turned out to be great character, and my favorite right next to Aria Stark.

The series started with the guy who is most widely considered noble and "good" exec uting a young boy because he ran away from horrific undead creatures and thus left his post, and yet the queen who executed her trusted adviser after finding out he was plotting against her and even tried to poison her is the evil mad queen.

agree! agree! agree! with every opinion and word you've said. well done too for compiling the reasons why the show ending was so fucked up and underwhelming to the extreme. (I can't even rewatch any of season 8 episodes - season 1 through 7 I've seen at least 10 times each and still see new things in the episode and Never get sick of watching them) of course we all spoke and argued about it at length with our Got community after it ended so abysmally. you have encapsulated everything that I feel and have wanted to say to those that didnt get it just beautifully (as you do 😘) love your work Gray

Aces on my sister! The blame can be spread among them all - You can see in the early seasons where they did hang close to the books and gave the detail to suck people into the characters, but then it were as if they just threw their hands/scripts/and care to the wind and wrapped it up poorly in crazy leaps and bounds. And THANK YOU for telling people how it didn't happen. GO READ THE MARVELOUS BOOKS

I like Dany and Sansa both, and because I love them j believe season 8 sucked. Starks wanted to be together again, they wanted to be happy, the show didn't give them that. Dany wanted her House to rise to glory, they didn't give her that. Moral of the story: season 8 sucks

i just know that they reached her patience when cersei beheaded missandei, and thats when she let herself fall apart and let the madness take over. she wouldnt risk tyrion, (her hand)s life just to convince cersei, but when missandei died she didnt care if she steps on anyones ashes, she didnt care abt varys, sansa, john, tyrion, arya and she knows that at that time all she can trust is grey worm, who is the only person still alive (thats with her) that she can fully trust her life with.

Literally. She was never mad, all her actions made complete sense, there was never any foreshadowing for her being oh so mad. The way they assassinated Daenerys' character still pisses me off to this day!
