EVERY TOOL BOX OR SERVICE CART I'VE OWNED OVER THE YEARS!!

I've been asked over the years what type of toolbox do I recommend? What kind of service cart do I recommend? Should I buy a service cart or a toolbox? Should I own both a service cart and a toolbox? Guy's it really depends on your situation. Not just what you can afford financially, but where you work and what kinds or people you work with. Do you have a problem with theft? Do you have a problem with other mechanics or technicians loaning tools? Do your tools grow legs and walk away? what's your position at your shop? All of these things play a roll when committing to buy one over the other or in some cases both. Now a service cart is definitely more mobile within a shop, but I also understand the need for a lot of tools. Not every shop is the same. Where I work we all trust one another like family and most of us have the same exact tools or diagnostic specialty tools there as it is. So there is no real need for 3 or 4 guys to all have the same thing. We all have a job to do in the shop and non of us are working on the same part of the car as the other guy. So this makes sharing easier. Thanks for watching my video. if you like the video give me a thumbs up. comment down below about your experience. Thanks as always for watching. see you guys next time.

Nobody at my shop has any issues about borrowing or sharing tools. This way we all can focus on working and no excuses because they don't have the right tool.

Same with my Shop. We still follow the rule if you borrow it twice, then it's time to buy yourself that tool. But in the long run, we're all in the same boat, trying to make MONEY! Nobody really stresses about borrowing each others tools. I love the people I work with.

If you would have started with the snap-on box and paid it off you would still have it. I started my bus mechanic in CALIFORNIA and in the 80s I had to lock my box to go to lunch. Those superglue fingers

I just got my first five drawer service cart(harbor freight) with some amazon picks to fill it. Trying to move into the shop from being a heavy equipment operator again. For six years in other jobs, tools were provided or I had a credit to get what I needed. Thanks for your reviews, I’ve pinched some pennies from you and a few others for filling up my new box.

I don't mind lending tools as long as you don't just go into my box without me knowing. I also won't lend tools to someone who never buys tools because it should be a two way street.

Be selective on who you loan tools to. I work as a heavy equipment mechanic at a mine and loaned an ingersoll rand 1/2" small body impact to a guy who changed departments and won't return it. My supervisor states he will but a year later still waiting. I was looking to upgrade to a bigger snap on box from a craftsman stack with a side cabinet but I've only got 9 years until retirement so I went with the US general 72" for $1100 six months ago and it works out nice. If anyone goes the US gen route take off the straight grease zerks for the swivel casters and install 45s. You need to

@@johngregg6333 If I have one gripe about Matco boxes, the drawers are too deep. They are designed to hold boxed sets of Matco tools! I am an aviation mechanic so moving happens. I bought a SS Kobalt for a job I had 8 hours from home, it was surprisingly good. With the truck tool prices today I would probably buy 6 Kobalts instead of 1 big SO. That being said i don't regret it at all!

Funny thing is I hear more people praise that about Matco. When I had a Mac tech series after the top drawer you couldn't fit anything taller than a screwdriver in the first 3 rows. I thought all those drawers would give me more storage but I had a couple I couldn't use because of the depth.

Istarted in cars and a small tool box, went the snap on route, moved up to trucks and the tools got bigger... Heavy equipment, bigger tools/ bigger boxes... all this was done in big serviced shops where people come and go, cant leave a wrench lay out. Now I work in a private shop on every thing, and my tool box hasn't closed in five years. I now have several tool boxes from different manufacturers. p.s. I also work on trains four days a week where they provide every tool.

I started with a 4 drawer matco heavy duty service cart then it got overflowed so I had to step it up with a snap on 6 drawer split top cart. A service cart with drawers all the way down with a opening top is all I need for now since I'm an entry level mechanic at a bus company. If I didn't have that specialty tool I'd ask to borrow without any problems. When I was at the dealer as a lube tech basic hand tools were provided.

For the past 15 years I’ve used cheap toolboxes and an open service cart. Finally stepped it up to a Matco cart and I barely go to my box now. It’s amazing how easy it is to work out of just a cart for daily repairs. Toolbox is now for those tools I use once in awhile

I just bought a used snap on classic 78 55 inch 11 drawer box for 900 dollars. It locks, all the drawers open, just a little sticky as it hasnt been used much for a few years! An absolute steal. I also have a 30 inch harbor freight 4 drawer cart i use at community college i bought new and a 26 inch 5 drawer craftsman box i keep at home. The snap on will be going to the dealer i work at. I went a little box crazy as a beginner tech but i need all 3 boxes and can afford them. I paid less than 2 grand for all my boxes in total. I have a lot of decent amount of tools as a beginner tech and im crazy about having an organized box so i really enjoy all the space

If I were to start all over I would not buy a big tool box. The prices are just way too high. I would buy 3 tool carts. 2 with drawers all the way down and 1 with 3 levels of drawers. That would fit most of the tools that you would need. Maybe add a storage cabinet for big tools and equipment. If you work at a place that people are willing to share, then that is a bonus. It may save you money on tools why you are there. If you move to another job, it may actually hurt you. You definitely need to find a place that you can feel comfortable at and with people you can trust.

I started out of a bin, then my boss lent me a one drawer little Mac cart, I went to hf to get a 4 drawer cart which I used as a stationary tool box for a year and just moved the little Mac cart around with my sockets and wrenches in it. I just bought a snapon 40” roll cab and that is now my stationary “tool box” while I use my 4 drawer cart for its intended purpose. That’s my journey 😬

Does it affect the price of your box if you put stickers on it when you go to trade it in for a bigger box
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway 5 жыл бұрын
I know they prefer no stickers on it, but I don't know if it effects the trade in value. Usually they are looking for who made the box because that matters to their customers who are buying one used and secondly if it has any digs or scratches.

I started in a harbor freight five drawer. I filled that thing up after about two years and just recently I bought a us general 44” bottom box. Tons of room and it was affordable. My next step will either be a top box or a bigger service cart. People at my shop don’t like to share but I’ll let people use my stuff if they are respectful and would return the favor.

I only lend tools to a certain few people in my shop. Mainly a younger kid than me because he is starting out, but the big reason why I’ll lend to him and not the other young kid is because the guy I have no issue lending tools to is always on the tool truck or at the store every week adding tools that he needs.

Some good comments here on having a good size cart. I totally agree. I've had a few different carts and boxes from a little craftsman to a triple bank mac tech. I loved that box and the idea of a big box in general but in reality it's a pain to walk across the shop every time I need something. Where I work now I don't need a ton of tools so I have pretty much everything in a matco 6 drawer cart. It's a little tight to push that one around for quick jobs so I'm looking at something small with maybe a single drawer. I'd also like some kind of bulk storage.
