After looking through every stage in a level editor for Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 I found a couple of interesting leftover launch stars. Some were just floating there while others required a switch to appear. In this video I mod the game so I can finally access these mysterious unused launch stars and see where they truly take us...

My guess would be that they are either alternate routes/the planets were placed differently, if they were unused areas there would usually be a zone/unused object

Little update for everyone: A few additional unused ones have been discovered, such as: Tall Trunk Galaxy - Sling Star Dusty Dune Galaxy - Launch *and* Sling Star Sky Station Galaxy - Launch Star Just to name a few

Man, I remember being so mystified by the Deep Dark Launch Star...I must've been no more than 10 or so at the time. When I finally learned how to hack my Wii and use Gecko codes, flying up to it -- and dying -- was one of the first things I did.

This is really interesting. These launch stars are all over the place that it's hard to understand what they were really ment for (except the one in Dusty Dune). Perhaps these mysterious launch stars will serve a purpose in the E3 mod?

Here’s my theory on the Launch Stars 1.Lead to Gold Leaf mission 2 in Honeyhive 2.May have lead to another airship 3.I’m stumped. Maybe one of the planets was placed in a different location, or there was simply another unused planet 4.Sunbaked Sand Castle probably had land sections 5.Deep Dark Galaxy was likely much bigger. Possible that planets from other big water galaxies were once merged with Deep Dark 6.I mean, you kind of explained this one already. I think the Hightail Falls secret mission may have originally been in Yoshi Star, which makes sense 7.Guessing Tall Trunk originally had more planets 8.Again, you kind of explained this already. Could honestly be for a lot of different SMG1 bosses. Hope one day we experience an older, post-E3, pre-release version of the games. Sorta like what people are trying to do with SM64 right now.

When I play Super Mario Galaxy 1, my primary objective is not to collect power stars. It is to use every Launch Star in the game. This also includes ones that require the flying hack to reach. I want every Launch Star to draw a line in the sky. I am also interested in placing my own Launch Star paths and cameras in custom levels. Although you can make Launch Stars that simply connect point A and point B, making Launch Stars is an art that takes knowledge and skill. You need to make a path in the sky that is more interesting than just a straight line, use the camera editor to create cinematic views, and figure out how to edit BMS and CIT files to make the chords match your custom music. Launch Stars that appear in the wrong mission are also considered unused because they do not draw lines in the sky in SMG1 even though a line has been drawn by playing the correct mission. There are a few in Space Junk left over from Tarantox mission in the other two missions and in SMG2 there are two Launch Stars in Yoshi Star left over from Spiny Control in the first mission.

Being sent into the abyss in the Galaxy games was always scarier to me than falling to my death in any other Mario game. The idea of these unfinished Launch Stars sending you into the great beyond is actually chilling. I kind of associate it with the similar sense of dread I got from large areas like indoor pools at night after closing.

Just imagine the same thing that happened to Mario 64, Zelda OOT, Mario Kart 64 and so on happening to the galaxy games. I bet we'd a lot of unused areas, maybe old layouts, the beta enemies in use, maybe more beta enemies, maybe more data that's linked to starman fortress, the beta buoy base galaxy in high poly form with all it's functions (like the target) as well as the area from where you would have been able to shoot yourself at the target and, getting to know these dragon flys and even more. But I think Nintendo wouldn't be as happy as we would be.😅

@@SPG64 I think he deleted it, but look at the planetoids in the Flip-out galaxy (I got it wrong the first time) with whitehole and look at the back of one of them. You should see this unique empty hole in the back of one of them. Possibly an unused location for a green star he said.

correct me if I'm wrong, but you CAN activate the unused honeyhive launch star by normal means. I think it was by reaching the end of either star 1 or 2 casually, and than falling back to the starting area and the launch star will be there. Maybe it was an unused way to get back up?
