I mean... It's not exactly easy for the others. The others are either from the 50's, or from low budget film or either just plain mockbusters who tryied to keep the cost at a minimum. The 2005's movie had it all for it. Production value, actors, time spent on it. I wonder what a movie with the same budget would look like now.

The Fox TV adaptation shouldn't even be considered, in my irrelevant opinion, honestly has nothing to do with the source material other than sharing its name, but I guess *war of the worlds* sounds better than Boston Dynamics Dog-bot invasion.

Jeff Wayne's tripods were my favourite as a kid but the 2005 film made me realise that the tripod design needed to be much more agile to quickly negotiate a variety of terrain. The tripods in The Great Martian War and True Story have the best overall design in my opinion. Still very alien but not too space age whilst retaining that built-for-purpose, mechanical feel. However, I don't think any of these films accurately display the sorts of damage the heat ray in the H G Wells' book would really inflict upon Humans and their technology. That would be perhaps too horrifying if done accurately. Jeff wayne comes closest but that's only shown in the illustrations.

Or in the game for WOTW. Specially with some of the little lore tidbits you get from their Research cues where the Martian Lead tells you what sort of damage it offers. And the Blood farms... Man those sound horrific.

I read and reread the book several times over the past decades, it's a favorite of mine. The Spielberg tripods match the image in my head that I got from reading the book the best, except his tripods were much taller than the book version. I don't care for the versions that look like beetles that much.
@AlanCanon2222 Жыл бұрын
I'm fondest of the 1953 version, it still packs a punch, considering how long ago it was made. Like others here I'm a fan of the novel and would love to see a definitive adaptation (that doesn't have moustaches made of cardboard).

It's a bloody shame "The Great Martian War" isn't available on DVD in general, as it seems, it's the best WotW, from my point of view. The Spielberg movie is an easy 2nd place. Here in Germany some movies were never released, like "A True Story", and that Asylum shite ironicly was marketed as WotW 2 + 3, because of Spielberg's movie, they just hoped we would make a connection & consume product. 😅 About that tv-show with the robo-doggies, take the title away, maybe change the planet of the invaders, and it's a completely different thing. That show isn't available here as well, I only know about S1 being translated, everything else doesn't seem to be available here. Is there a DVD of that anywhere? Personaly I'm diving into the WotW comics, graphic novels, illustrated books right now, though it will take some time to get everything or most of it. I think THIS would be a good video as well, also about audioplays + radio broadcasts, I have several of these as well, though most of it is a German production, not sure this is a thing outside of Germany. The audioplays, of course...

I still like the 1953 "tripods" the best as they come across more sleek and advanced. They just look the coolest out of all adaptations and the idea behind them is more interesting and "futuristic" with the three force field type legs as opposed to actual walking, clunky tripods.

The 50s ones are the most iconic to me. If only for the fact that the heat ray noise and the pulsing before it fires are so ingrained to my mind that even if I ever hear them anywhere else, that’s where my mind goes. And those fuckers had me scared of the streetlight outside my bedroom window for weeks.
@Epoxinator Жыл бұрын
The dog robot had 4 legs. The Martians in their tripods in the book didn't willy nilly run around shooting their heat rays at individual people. They used it to disrupt supply lines and railroads and infrastructure. They used it against military vehicles and weaponry. The Black Smoke was the Martian's primary weapon against humans, and they didn't spray it out of the tripods. They shot Black Smoke cannisters over great distances, and the poison smoke killed vast numbers of people without the Martians having to put themselves or their machines in harm's way.

If they would have opened with the heat rays against the HMS Thunder Child then they may not have lost three tripods. Instead they tried to gas it first and paid the price.

Maybe I missed it, but there was a TV series in 1988-1990 called War of the Worlds and it was a sequel to the 1953 movie. In fact, the Sylvia Van Buren (played by the original actress) is in a few episodes and they even do a weird time travel episode where they go back to 1953. Had huge hopes for it, but was OK at best.

Until a director can do better, with a story as the book by HG Wells was written based in the UK, nothing will ever come close to Jeff Wayne's musical version and the tripods on the front cover in my eyes. Where you can lie back in a dark room and visualise the film with great dialogue by Richard Burton and a fantastic masterpiece of an album. This was probably the first album I ever heard as a child in the 70s/80s and I'll never tire of it, the music just stays with you. One of the Tripod statues and a capsule even stand proud in Woking town centre, near where HG Wells wrote the book and with Horsell Common down the road ... and I'm pretty local to there.
