Wish I would have known earlier this week. Capsized my Hobie 18 for the first time ever while I was trapping out and as I was coming from the top my right knee came across the jib block. Well I took a slice down to the bone and it definitely made righting the boat a bit more challenging. The fellow on the boat had never been on a catamaran and I had not had to right the 18 before. The local fire department came out and gave my gapping wound a wrapping and eventually we sailed the boat back to shore and I made my way to the ER for a stitching. Can't wait to get back flying some hull. Nice video Joe.

A good way to learn how to prevent something is deliberatly not preventing it (for a while)! I did this, not as courageous as these guys in a high speed sailing catamaran, but with my inline skates (free style quite advanced level, so I also had quite some speed) I deliberately fell in many different ways until I had a great sense of the limits. It was actually joyful, like I also see with these guys. Thanks for vid and courage!

Excellent as usual. You need to do a flippy flippy. To show that in strong winds you need to jump on the hull that was in the water. If you’re standing solo on the bottom hull leaning backwards, you need to make a real effort to get onto the hull where your feet were so you can avoid a flippy flippy. If you have a crew member, they need to know to hold down the hull that’s in the water when the high hull starts coming down for sure. Great video.

Great stuff. You forgot one...the "Hobie salute", where you stuff a tack in decent wind and wave action. Boat sails backwards, trips on the rudders and goes over backwards, leaving the bows pointing to the sky. Remedy is to climb one hull and tip the boat over on her side and right normally.

I have a pretty teaching story of a capsize. Once I capsized on the side with my buddy on the trapeze. I kept the boat upright but he jumped to do not end up on the sails. So he was in the water and I was keeping sailing trying to come back for him. Then I capsized far away from his position and he couldn't swim fast enough to get me. So I was with a man overboard and the boat capsized at 180 degrees in 15/20 knots of wind. I had to wait for the Rib rescue. Lesson was: If one of the crew members falls in the water in strong wind, just capsize with him. (sorry for the bad English it isn't my first language.)
@djonny_official

Nice one. Reminded me of racing my 16 around Port Moresby harbour in Papua New Guinea. A mate had a close call taking out a newbie on the trapeze and capsizing. As one 5.8 sailor to another Chris, don't be afraid to stand out on the daggerboards when righting the boat. The 5.8 is very solidly built and can take a lot of punishment. For my righting line, I've just got a large bowline that goes around the dolphin striker and comes up over the front beam to loop around the base of the mast step. That will create a very secure anchor point for the line when you come to use it. One idea that my local Nacra dealership (Brisbane Catamaran Centre, Australia) does with all their boats too is tie or splice a loop into the end of the righting line that is fed through a bit of vinyl tube which can give you a decent handhold when necessary and is big enough to get your foot into so you have an extra boost for getting back onto the trampoline.

Great video! 10+ performance! I can't see too many pitch poles. Awesome to see the crew suddenly launched through the air. Never want to see anyone injured though. Way to go! Looks like the trapeze like acks as a leash to keep in contact to the cat in strong wind. Love the quick release feature. A must have! Keep up the great work! BRAVO!

Ha! Love this joe . Definitely taking several for the team . Ash looked a little shell shocked by the third one. Your stamina and attitude prevailed 👍 I fell through the 15's sail straight of the coach last year leaving an embarrassed Graeme shaped hole in it . Not my finest hour :-/. But never looked back after that :-))) Roll on September

I broke too many sails on hobie 15 to a dismay of my instructors, although good sports as they were, just swang them to a sailmaker for next round of fast and furious sailing. We were training in the mountains on a not so large (tight) lake, with gusts easy to trace, yet riding ever changing winds with each hilloc, or tree gap, or bay, turn and twists...

There is one i can think of that you didn't show. The capsize right after the righting. Example: forget to counter balance on the dolphin striker, possibly in conjunction with not releasing the main sail. Never done that because I paid attention to your earlier videos but I can see it easily accomplished.

Great video. Why is pitchpoling a big NO NO. When my son and I were training at Wildwinds Mauritius, we were discouraged from pitchpoling. Capsizing was fine, "How else will you know your or the boats limit" was the logic
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that pitchpoling is a no no, i'd say that if you haven't pitchpoled, you don't really know where the limit is.
