Yeah. And it feels weird to see a car very similar to mine (when it comes to inside) in this configuration. I wonder which one is more convenient for a left/right handed person, apart from just being used to one of them because it's what you've learned at the beginning or you've been driving for years.

@@ilham7345 For me it's the opposite. I'm right-handed/ambidextrous and couldn't imagine shifting with my left hand, the steering wheel is so light and the gear stick very heavy (at least in my car) that it feels more or less natural to hold the wheel with left hand. Even when I'm not shifting and just using onr hand to hold the wheel I use my left hand.

And I don't wait for my revs to drop if I need all the speed and power when I change up like I put first Rev limiter imedaitly second and the car jumps forward giving me more speed, I know the clutch takes the wear there but so what it's a clutch... The hardest part of learning to rev match for me was figuring out how quickly or slowly to release the clutch. You learn that it just depends on your speed, and what you're attempting to do with the downshift. If you're slowing down and engine braking it's better to use finesse. If you're trying to drop a gear and disappear, you let it out quicker while adding heavier throttle.
@marco7838
@marco7838 Жыл бұрын
When I’m in gear 2 and I slow down a bit and downshift to gear 1, the car is on the high side of the speed and revs for that gear so around 11mph. And when I bring the clutch up there is a of a jerk. How i avoid that is by braking until around 6/7mph then fully coming off the clutch. But my instructor said you can downshift and come off the clutch even if you are on the high side so still around 10/11mph and slowly, smoothly come off. Is this correct and will that prevent the jerk?

Do you downshift and use engine braking to slow down the car? My Irish instructor taught me to switch to a lower gear (usually 2nd gear) while at a high speed, without using any regular braking, and just hold the clutch at the biting point for a few seconds and slowly release the clutch. I used this technique with my Chinese instructor and he said big no no just use regular brake.

Xopher well i was just wondering in what situations would I rev match downshift instead of a traditional brake then downshift.. Of course on my driving lessons I was taught to slow down to the speed I need and change into the correct gear for that speed. For example I was taught if I was going 55mph in 5th gear, I would use the brake to slow down to an appropriate speed for the situation. for example 15mph.. for this I would brake and then clutch in at about 20mph & go into 2nd gear and release brake and clutch at 15mph.
@Shakzey
@Shakzey 6 жыл бұрын
Ji mainly so that you can smoothly transition in to the correct gear and not slow down then change then have to get back up to speed. For example coming up to a roundabout at about 25-30 in 4th/3rd gear, then heel toe braking in to 2nd to reduce speed to enter the roundabout and be ready to accelerate out of the roundabout. With traditional slow down, change gear, you would be coasting a little before you got in to the correct gear and on a roundabout that can be dangerous if you misjudge speed of the traffic from the right. I mostly use this technique in corners to remain stable and keep a good speed as well as be on the power for corner exit. Hope that wasnt too confusing?
@alskndlaskndal
@alskndlaskndal 6 жыл бұрын
The revs in the higher gear will always be lower than in the lower gear at any speed (and they drop further when you push in the clutch). So the clutch will have to help the engine get up to the right speed. Your car can handle it and you'll be fine driving around without the more advanced techniques, but the techniques shown in this video will get you closer to an ideal, perfectly smooth shift.

The reason you were scolded for using engine braking over the foot brake, is that on modern cars brakes are so good there's no need to use engine braking anymore. Using the foot brake activates the brake light, giving an indication to drivers behind you of what you are doing, whereas engine braking can potentially lead to you getting rear ended.

So this kind of makes a bit more sense- as a recently new driver - one thing I've been doing (and you may lambast me for this) is doing engine breaking - probably badly! By instead of me breaking - I would shift down into a gear (say 4th to 3rd) as I approach an area I need to slow down in and let the engine slow me - Something my dad always did. What say ye? Never do this ever again unless I want to break something expensive? Or right concept, wrong application?

It's something a lot of people do and you can carry on doing it if you like, but it will just accelerate the wear on your clutch over time. The more you slip the clutch, (especially high revs/load) the less time they'll last

Nothing wrong with what you're doing, you can limit clutch wear across the board by giving a blip of throttle on the down change, the more accurately you rev match the smoother and less wearing any change will be. Only in extreme circumstances are you likely to significantly reduce the life of your clutch. Unfortunately Paynos knows enough to dazzle anyone with only a little knowledge, but doesn't understand enough to give consistently accurate and useful advice.
@alskndlaskndal
@alskndlaskndal 6 жыл бұрын
Engine braking itself doesn't hurt your clutch, downshifting poorly while going into an engine brake could. Now I've heard different opinions on the best way to handle situations like going downhill, some say that engine braking too much is hard on your engine.

@alexdavila1356
@alexdavila1356 Жыл бұрын
You *SHOULD* be in neutral at a stop, but you want to try to stay in gear, as you come to a stop, for as long as possible to take advantage of: 1) *Engine braking :* engine braking is the phenomenon that happens when you coast while you are in gear. The car slows down as excess RPM is absorbed by the engine 2) *So that you can make a last-minute emergency maneuver if necessary:* If the car is in gear and something happens just before you stop, like a pedestrian or another car gets in the way, you are still in gear to move away. If you coast in neutral, and you panic, you won't be in gear to maneuver away and you'll either crash or stall. The moment just before you stop is when you put the car into neutral. You may coast 1 or 2 meters, but the important thing is to only put the car into neutral when you are absolutely certain evasive maneuvers aren't necessary and you've slowed the car down enough that you are fully in control of your stop and the car won't run away on you.

@@alexdavila1356 So I've been driving my manual for a year now, and your second point was one I never considered. I have taken advantage of engine braking, and I've been enjoying my car a lot. But I never thought about emergency maneuvers. That actually makes a lot of sense for staying in gear as long as possible.

1. Since when downshifting is hard? 2. You don’t release the clutch slowly, you ONLY need to be slow pausing at the engagement point, feel the rev match, smooth out the jerk and back to fast release. Most ppl when learning clutch don’t understand that it is not releasing slowly, it is “holding”, the clutch releases itself when the revs match.
@tomshepard9050
@tomshepard9050 4 жыл бұрын
frigglesHD | Let's Plays to make things simple, its all about holding the clutch till the rev matches, not releasing, that alone mitigate almost all jerky driving problems. If that is not enough either you are racing or selecting wrong gears.

frigglesHD | Let's Plays it’s called “baulkring”. Like i said, you r driving too fast in city. When u slow down, like feathering the brakes, the speed difference 2nd 3rd not really much. Need I tell you how to shift as well? You don’t force it in gear, u apply enough pressure when it syncs it will get in gear. I drive a lot of old Toyotas, their 1st 2nd is rough, I know my shit. You guys are driving to feel like you r in a race car, rev matching stroke your egos trust me I’m guilty of it as well. All n all, NOT necessary, driving smooth is not accelerating or decelerating too fast, observation n preparedness is key. R we done here? I’m not getting paid for this 🤦‍♂️

So ... I've only been driving manual for ... Not long lol. Has an old Exploder for $250 and that was my lesson rig. About a year or so. When you rev match, do you want your rpm's to be where they would be if you were upshifting? Say I shift at 3000 rpm. Push in the clutch to down shift, rpm's drop, gas to get it back to 3000, then slowly let off the clutch? I just got a 2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude with a turbo in it. Low miles, great deal ... I love this thing, but downshifting is SOOOO strange lol. Any advice is more than welcome! Thank you in advance!

Engineering Explained has a great video about this. www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=%23&ved=2ahUKEwiuuuPIpOvmAhXMLlAKHYRvCFIQwqsBMAt6BAgJEAQ&usg=AOvVaw0VTJzWxrN8ZFOD4xbU2nov Basically it's a technique used back in the days when cars and especially trucks did not have great synchros in their transmission. The purpose of synchros is to match the speed of the gear you want to shift in with the speed the transmission is currently spinning. Let's say you drive in 4th gear and you are slowing down so you need to shift to 3th, the speeds of the two gears in the transmission are different and need to be synchronized to be able to shift it without grinding the gears. But like i said, its pretty useless in modern cars because basically every car has synchros today. But it still looks cool and it's kinda a forgotten technique.
