For me, I like the Vista/Windows 7 startup sound. Maybe it's because it is the only startup sound on my Windows 10 (after checking it in the sound settings), but I like it for its gentle and pleasant tune and synth, like that if the Windows 95. The XP, while iconic and cool, is a little loud and bombastic (which can be startling if the speakers are cranked high). I prefer something that has a smoother and more welcoming vibe.

I remember the first time I heard all those grand, sweeping symphonic melodies, and just feeling wowed by the whole experience (it may have helped that this was my first computer of my own, and it had amazing speakers).

As a Windows user myself, I want to make a few corrections: 1. There were no startup or shutdown sounds before Windows 3.1 2. Windows 2000 used the same startup and shutdown sound as Windows ME. The startup sound for Windows 2000 shown here is the one used in the Beta. 3. All builds of Longhorn used XP sounds until Vista RTM. 4. Windows 8 and Windows 10 do not have their own startup sounds. You can enable a startup sound through the control panel. The sound that can be enabled is the Windows Vista/7 startup sound.

Brian Eno actually composed the Windows 95 startup sound; (from Wikipedia) In an interview with Joel Selvin in the San Francisco Chronicle he said- The idea came up at the time when I was completely bereft of ideas. I'd been working on my own music for a while and was quite lost, actually. And I really appreciated someone coming along and saying, "Here's a specific problem - solve it." The sounds used in this part of the video are actually from a royalty-free custom sound scheme made back in the early 2000s by NEOsounds called the Deep Fantasy Sound Scheme, which was used in several unofficial Longhorn- and Vista-style themes for Windows XP.

I think everything boils down to childhood memories and ms windows covering a great portion of our nostalgic sentiment since it spans more than 35 years of home computing. There are fans of every single build, be it 3.1, 95 (especially me), XP... Of course the accesibility of an average user increased drastically over decades, so it is normal to have a higher number of XP fans compared to other editions. In my case, back in the days of Windows 3.1, that operating system were majorly available in computer labs, whereas Win95 made the first major entrance to average households. In my opinion, Windows 95 holds all my teenage memories (yes I am 42 at the moment), and no sound beats the sounds of 95.

A few mistakes: Windows versions from 1.01 to 3.0 didn't have a startup or shutdown sound. The WAV file format wasn't around until the early 1990s. The first version of Windows to include a startup sound was Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions, released in 1991. Windows 2000 sounds are incorrect. The sounds you included for it were actually used in beta builds of 2000 from 1946 to 1969. No build of Windows Longhorn ever used or even included those sounds. It used XP sounds up to build 5840, when they were replaced with Vista RTM sounds. Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 did have a startup and shutdown sound, but both were hidden by default. When enabled, they were identical to the Windows Vista/7 sounds. In versions of Windows 10 from 1607 onwards, you could no longer change them without hacking the registry.

Windows 3.1 (1992) was the start of my childhood, computer math games, minesweeper, solitaire and much more; cozy and fun. Then Windows 95 was the best of my elementary/ High school years (2001-2004). Finally Windows XP (2007) was the peak of my electronic career; The net was so much fun to surf through, every website felt like shopping at a new public mall center with every store having something new to offer. Everything felt right where it needed to be. I appreciate the nostalgia of listening to memorable sounds that started everything. What an era to live through.

@@RWL2012 This video is 57% a joke! Some sounds are correct. But the rest of them is wrong! Here's why. Windows 1.0 and 3.0 didn't use sound. The Windows 2000 sounds used in the video actually come from Pre-Beta 3 builds. Windows 2000 RTM used Windows Me sounds. Windows Longhorn used Windows XP sounds. However, in RC builds, it used the Vista logon and logoff. Windows 8 and Windows 10 use Windows 7 sounds, however, they are disabled by default.

0:40 was actually the NT5 (Windows 2000 BETA) shutdown. Not Windows 2000 startup which was the same as the ME startup sound.

Those sounds were the beta 3 of windows 2000 and they sounded better than the ME startup sound

I will never forget windows XP i used it for all of my childhood i will enver forget the beatiful bliss i will enver forget the luna theme i will never forget the startup and shutdown sound so many memories i will never forget when i would wake up in a saturday or sunday morning when i was like 3 or 4 im not kidding i would go to my windows xp pc and watch tomy&jerry all day so many beatiful old memories 😭

Windows 1x and 2x did not have startup or shutdown sounds. Not only that, but the startup/shutdown sound for these versions in the video is actually a pitched-up snippet of the Windows 95 startup sound.

Windows Vista and 7 sounds are my childhood, because we had those in school. When I was leaving highschool, they had mostly upgraded the desktops with Windows 7 to Windows 10, then quickly jumped to Windows 11.
