Every "Wow" From 2015 IndyCar Fontana

The 2015 IndyCar race at Fontana had 80 lead changes and 3,173 on-track overtakes, both IndyCar records. A new aerokit and a wide track created a drafting and slingshot race similar to CART's Hanford Device era of the late 90s. The broadcast booth of Leigh Diffey, Steve Matchett, and Paul Tracy were in awe the entire race.

I'm still ticked off that this race had so poor marketing, because I lived 1.5 hours from the racetrack and had been to every NASCAR race there since 2010. I didn't even know the race was happening until literally the day it happened.

I have watched a LOT of racing in my 36 years of life and I'll tell you... this was probably the most thrilling oval track race EVER contested, in ANY series. If you've never seen this race start to finish, you need to change that... because after all the near-misses (and tragedies) IndyCar has had at the big ovals over the past several years, we'll probably never see them dare to run a race like this ever again.

To be fair This was only 4 years after Dan Weldon died in probably the worst crash in racing history.

@Lucas Holmes WHAT. There are at least 999 crashes worse than Wheldon's one. Even non-fatal ones. Dan was massively unlucky for catching the fence, but there are crashes like von Trips' one or the '55 Le Mans crash or Webber's Le Mans flip or even Jean Behra's crash when he flew to the sky.

@@thesfdoctor3603 the 55 le mans crash is the worst. That's a given. If you take away spectators Weldon's was the worst. Only thing that comes close is Bodine or Antoine Hubert. 3 cars flew into the catch fence. Just under half the field was involved. Several drivers were injured. Nobody had a soft impact. Not to mention the fatality.

@@Ofitus21 i was at vegas. that track is crazy banked and the time of day they ran was not good those billboards on turn 1 made it so they could only see flashing lights. it was setup very poorly. was my first in person indy race and after being there for all the festivities, it was a tragedy what happened.

There is a reason Matchett is more revered than today's modern F1 of Croft yelling. Larry Mac made US motorsport fans want more technical STEM thinking. Matchett made fans understand the intricacies of F1's aero aids and hybrids. Viewers could understand their cars better after watching the races, something lacking in an emotionally driven broadcast now.
