Kurt Cage34 and when they bring it back they need to watch the first few, maybe up until Austin won. Even the year Mabel won (wrong winner, but he was definitely an eleventh hour choice, pretty obvious that was going to be Razor’s year if he wasn’t injured. Because those are all star making performances. Bret in the first year of the pay per view. Owen the following year. Then after Mabel you get Steve Austin. That 96 King of the Ring is probably the best multiperson layered story. Before that the story was the guy who won’s story only. Whereas Steve’s year needed Jake Roberts to play his cards perfectly. Which he did. But he wanted Steve pushed in the worst way. He was the only one in the office advocating for Steve. (Mind you he was still heel at this point. His character is clearly a heel, Bret made some good points in wrestling with shadows about how backwards babyface vs heel was in the mid 90’’s in America. And it all started because Razor was just too cool to boo. But even Razor had redeeming qualities to his character. Stone Cold was based on a serial killer mob hitman (iceman). The fact that people cheered him before he turned face and became an anti hero was really bad.

You can do a lot with a KoTR format - start with 8 to a final two - You could have a belt on the line (I.e. the champion could be eliminated and the belt vacant during the semis/finals of the tournament), you could have 3 match stipulations per round - a normal match, a falls count anywhere etc etc. It could be a workhorse showcase

Randy Savage won the 1987 tournament but didn’t start using the “Macho King” gimmick until 1989 when he beat Jim Duggan for the crown. Harley Race had won the 1986 tourney and taken on the “King” moniker, but when he went out with an injury in 1988 Bobby Heenan passed the crown to Haku (Ted DiBiase won the actual tournament that year) who was later beaten by Duggan for the crown. So Haku and Duggan are both counted as former Kings of the Ring even though neither ever won the tournament.

I legit miss Owen. His death was by far the biggest tragedy that I've seen with wrestling. He was like Jericho, you could love him, you could love to hate him, and he could control those emotions on the flip of a dime. WWF, at the time, had a gem in Bret, yes, sure. He is my favorite all-time after all. But Owen kind of got pigeon-holed behind him. Had he came a long in the 70-80's Owen would have been a multiple WWF champion and one of the biggest stars on the card. WWF seriously misused his talent, and because of one dumb gimmick, he lost his life to an accident. It was a damned shame and probably one of the saddest days in wrestling.

Yo! It’s me! It’s me! It’s D.D.P! Ah DDP my childhood idol and favorite wrestler from when I was 3 to 12 years old. He was the real life version of the little engine that could when he (someone the higher ups of WCW said would never get over and never be a star) became a red hot mega star easily as famous as the rock and stone cold at the time and became a 3 time WCW champion because he deserved to be and not because he was hand picked to be like other guys. In some alternate reality somewhere Vince and the higher ups of WWE appreciated DDPs drive and work acumen and didn’t have undertaker take him out back like old yeller At least he had a huge nostalgia fueled run of dominance for about 6 months in TNA 04’ that was genuinely fun to watch and not just surprising like hulk Hogan’s in 02’ somewhere else.

What I have noticed about all these ranking videos, is that the rankings are based on a present day view and not the view of when it happened. For example, in 2000 Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, and Chris Jerhico were all great wrestlers, but they were mid-carders. They put on some great matches competing for the IC and European Championships, but them being eliminated in the early rounds is not that surprising.

I have got to say I am VERY surprised that 1994 made it so high on the list. Most consider it mid at best. The match between Bret Hart and Kevin Nash as Diesel was definitely the highlight, and was a GOOD match, but was far from legendary. Mostly because Nash had torn groin muscles and was in pain the whole time, and I imagine Bret was being extra careful with him because of that, since that was the sort of guy Bret was. Were Nash in good shape I think the match could have been a legend. The whole Roddy vs Lawler thing was a terrible gimmick match that somehow was made the headliner. How do you make a gimmick match the headliner when you have the Intercontinental Champion fighting the Heavyweight Champion for the Heavyweight Belt? That's the formula for the GIANT main event of Wrestlemania VI, only 4 years earlier! Granted Diesel didn't win the belt (match ended in a disqualification), but that wasn't supposed to be a given! While some of the KotR matches were good, mostly Owen's, the rest weren't anything special from what I hear. I was actually there at the time, but I was young and didn't have a good seat.

"Why Diesel and Bret didn't main event KOTR 94 I'll never know". Well, Jim Neidhart accompanied Bret in that match and caused the DQ finish. Later his true intentions were revealed when he helped Owen win. If you reversed the order of those two matches, that wouldn't make sense. They could have ended on Owens win, but that would have closed the show with a heel win. So Piper and Lawler went last for the "feel good finish. Not that complicated really. nice video though.
