Such a powerful scene. Coach Taylor realizes that Matt is just a kid who has been through so much in his life and all the sudden he feels sympathy for him instead of anger, man this show was so great. The characters were so believable and real.

So i'm sure this is true of plenty of couples out there who followed the show: my gf watched for the soap opera storylines & i watched for the football stuff. In general, i found the melodrama of the show cheesy most of the time. But tbh - this scene always stands out in my mind as one of the best in the entire series.

@KCLynne
@KCLynne 3 жыл бұрын
I'd argue she left because she felt emotionally abandoned by her parents and just wanted her life to implode. It really had nothing to do with the Swede or Matt. She got a dose of reality when she saw where her choices had led her to and quickly stopped the self destruction. Hence by episode 5 that season she was already trying to get back into Matt's good graces.

HANDS down the best moment of the entire second season and a Top 10 moment of the entire series frankly for me. Such a powerful showcase from both Zach Gilford and Kyle Chandler right here. Everything Matt has gone through with just those first two seasons alone was basically building to this big moment and Coach was able to realize that instantly. The relatability of Matt along with his genuinely good character and heart is what made him easily one of the standout characters of the series for me. I know many understandably hate Julie even beyond her despicable Season 2 behavior, but Matt got his happy ending in the end and that was good enough for me because I felt like nobody else in the show had earned themselves one more than him.

Let me give a dose of how that goes in the real world. My senior year our starting QB was in my grade, he started every game for our team his Junior year, he was first team all conference and we made it to the quarterfinals of state. He is still the only QB in our schools history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. The second game of my senior year we barely beat a team we were supposed to dominate and our coach saw the writing on the walls. He wanted to get the team ready for next year, so he benched our stater and put in our sophomore back up. We were actually significantly worse with this kid but he remained the starter for the rest of the year. My coach let our former starter play running back and he maybe got 5 carries a game, he was actually getting looked at by colleges before the season started. I think that is so much harsher than how Eric handled Matt’s situation

Definitely one of my favorite scenes of the whole show. My high school never had a coach like this. In fact, throughout my 4 years of high school, we had 3 different head coaches. And just when we thought we genuinely found an honorable one, they would always turn their heads to the scoreboard. Granted I know winning is important, especially to the coaches career, but the students and players are equally as, if not, more important. I would’ve given anything to have a coach like this. Our coaches half the time didn’t even remember our names. The only names they remembered was the ones that had what seemed to be a natural ability to score touchdowns. They didn’t have eyes at all for underdogs. No mindset for mentorship. No hearts for sympathy for individual players needs. Nothing. Just eyes on the prize and publicity. And ironically enough, we never saw a championship. In fact, we barely made it to the playoffs and the team we faced first round scored like 5 touchdowns in the first half. To our zero touchdowns. They ran past us like we were standing still. And then even better, none of the coaches we had even coach anymore. They’re into real estate and sales and what not.

Honestly, after I finished this series back in January, Matt and Coach Taylor's is one of the best dynamics of the series along with Eric and Tami, Tim and Billy, & Eric and Buddy

Yeah this is up there with I think Michael B. Jordan scene from season 4 or 5 where he gets robbed or pressured to do some shady stuff and basically just starts swinging his fists at the air in frustration. Both that and this scene hit hard.

Everyone loves Coach Taylor's locker room speeches, and they are epic! BUT... it's the one on one moments he has with his players like this that REALLY make the show transcend the usual sports movie clichés. Don't get me wrong, I am a sucker for the sports movie clichés as well and they work in this show most of the time. But, the one on one fatherly moments, and this one in particular take the show to another level! What makes it more impressive is that a lot of it was usually shot in one or two takes which often brought out the best in the actors. This scene is a great example of that!

I agree but this wasn't his best scene. I get what he was going for but calling Matt selfish and telling him everyone is relying on him, as if he doesn't know that, is not the right direction to go. The kid felt like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders and no support system to help him carry it. Of course he is going to stumble.

I hadn't seen the seasons yet but I think coach is sometimes angry and rude with him beacuse Matthew is having a realtionship with his daughter and as a father of a young girl, his concerns and worries for her are on point. I will be watching the shoe after 5 days , because I had a paper after 5 days and after that I will be free and this season is on my prior list for sure.

I know exactly how he feels. The feeling that everyone leaves you, that you’re not good enough and something’s wrong with you. At least he had a girlfriend. Every girl I ever built up the courage to ask out turned me down flat. At least his coach saw something in him. Mine never did.

Matts def the best character and in my eyes the main character besides coach. Its kind of like varsity blues where james vander beek was the main character and backup qb the best qb in the country and be became a star himself, and ended up being central to the story after that. Same with matt. He became qb and dated the other main characters daughter. He was a great guy with a great heart. He was like your every man character and so many people can relate to him.

At this moment he was being selfish. He went out and got drunk when he needed to take care of his grandmother. He shouldn’t have to but he did. Everyone he’s ever loved left him. So he did deserve to be a little selfish. But he went a little to far.
