I'd argue she left because she felt emotionally abandoned by her parents and just wanted her life to implode. It really had nothing to do with the Swede or Matt. Hence by episode 5 that season she was already trying to get back into Matt's good graces.

HANDS down the best moment of the entire second season and a Top 10 moment of the entire series frankly for me. Such a powerful showcase from both Zach Gilford and Kyle Chandler right here. Everything Matt has gone through with just those first two seasons alone was basically building to this big moment and Coach was able to realize that instantly. The relatability of Matt along with his genuinely good character and heart is what made him easily one of the standout characters of the series for me. I know many understandably hate Julie even beyond her despicable Season 2 behavior, but Matt got his happy ending in the end and that was good enough for me because I felt like nobody else in the show had earned themselves one more than him.

Let me give a dose of how that goes in the real world. My senior year our starting QB was in my grade, he started every game for our team his Junior year, he was first team all conference and we made it to the quarterfinals of state. He is still the only QB in our schools history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. The second game of my senior year we barely beat a team we were supposed to dominate and our coach saw the writing on the walls. He wanted to get the team ready for next year, so he benched our stater and put in our sophomore back up. We were actually significantly worse with this kid but he remained the starter for the rest of the year. My coach let our former starter play running back and he maybe got 5 carries a game, he was actually getting looked at by colleges before the season started. I think that is so much harsher than how Eric handled Matt’s situation

Definitely one of my favorite scenes of the whole show. My high school never had a coach like this. In fact, throughout my 4 years of high school, we had 3 different head coaches. And just when we thought we genuinely found an honorable one, they would always turn their heads to the scoreboard. Granted I know winning is important, especially to the coaches career, but the students and players are equally as, if not, more important. I would’ve given anything to have a coach like this. Our coaches half the time didn’t even remember our names. The only names they remembered was the ones that had what seemed to be a natural ability to score touchdowns. They didn’t have eyes at all for underdogs. No mindset for mentorship. No hearts for sympathy for individual players needs. Nothing. Just eyes on the prize and publicity. And ironically enough, we never saw a championship. In fact, we barely made it to the playoffs and the team we faced first round scored like 5 touchdowns in the first half. To our zero touchdowns. They ran past us like we were standing still. And then even better, none of the coaches we had even coach anymore. They’re into real estate and sales and what not.

Don't get me wrong, I am a sucker for the sports movie clichés as well and they work in this show most of the time. But, the one on one fatherly moments, and this one in particular take the show to another level! What makes it more impressive is that a lot of it was usually shot in one or two takes which often brought out the best in the actors. This scene is a great example of that!

Selfish!!!! Did I hear him say Matt was selfish?

At this moment he was being selfish. He went out and got drunk when he needed to take care of his grandmother. He shouldn’t have to but he did. Everyone he’s ever loved left him. So he did deserve to be a little selfish. But he went a little to far.

Sucks this season got cut short because of the writers strike. It was really building up something great

this was one of the few times I disagreed with coach. Take matt on a walk and talk things out. Don't throw him in a shower because he's felt like that his whole life!

I’m not sure why everybody hates Season 2. It’s one of my favorites with a lot of my favorite scenes as well.

I think they would've made season 2 redeemable had the writers strike not happened, because there were so many gems (including this scene). However, that murder plot was all trash.
