I actually don't think Izaya is such a bad guy. I haven't finished the series yet, but he hasn't really done anything to make me hate him. He's the best character in the show. I love him.

Honestly, despite how confident and full of himself he acts; I get the feeling that he doesn't actually like himself. I think he specifically does things to alienate the people around him, and make them hate his guts. He talks about "humans" as if he isn't one. The way he praises them gives the feeling that he sees himself as below them. This is also probably why he doesn't flirt with Namie as much as he could.
