The Heart of the Canal System - Episode 65 Boating through Braunston
Braunston is one of those unique canal villages, full of history. What was once an industrial hub of boatbuilding and carrying companies it is now a picturesque haven for those who travel by narrowboat. There remain plenty of old working boats and we have a good look at the historic butty Raymond and those who worked her. We also delve into Braunston’s canal heritage.
Please can you consider supporting my channel, because any small investment will help me spend more time making quality videos, purchase better equipment, and help me continue my travels. Thank you

Thank you very much for the Friends of Raymond plug, Andrew. Yes, with more major work on Raymond coming up, any donations gratefully received! Nutfield & Raymond can be seen at Ricky in May and the Braunston Historic Rally in June (and other events TBC). A small correction, if I may - the actual shed from which Raymond was launched on 11th June 1958, stood on the site of the Braunston Marina car park, directly opposite where Raymond is now moored. Anyway, good stuff. Thank you again. Nick Lake (on behalf of FoR).

Thank you Nick, and I sincerely hope that you receive some donations. Raymond is a beautiful butty and all credit to you and those who have worked on her and renovated her so skillfully. Thank you also for the information regarding her launch site, much appreciated.

You know, this must of meant so much to Marie. Raymond got a lot out of this too. Time with his mother that he probably didn't think would ever feel so warm and needed. Such a wholesome moment.

Thanks Nikki, yeah I bet it's a bit chilly over there. Not had much snow on the Llangollen fortunately and -6 is just about OK for keeping the boat warm. It'll soon be spring 😁

Phew...I've just binge-watched the full set of your vlogs over the course of the last three days. I have to say that I've thoroughly enjoyed them and they brought back many happy memories. A family holiday between Benson and Lechlade during the hot summer of 1976 and then, in more recent times, the early 2000s and 2010s, trips along the Grand Union radiating out from Gayton marina and Market Harborough. I was especially pleased to see the episode from Stourport with Del, as I came to you via a recommendation from him. Thank you. P.S.: I've subscribed too.

Thank you David, and wow that's some task getting through that lot in 3 days. I'm glad it brought back memories, I've got to say that for me I think that stretch up to Lechlade is the most beautiful I've been on. It must have been amazing in the beautiful summer of 76 and I would imagine very few craft around.

@@talesfromtheswansneck In 1976 I was seventeen and it was the last time I holidayed with my "parents". I don't recall much about the trip, as I was more interested in when and where we would be mooring up so that I could fish, other than the fact we were on a boat it was hot and water levels were low to the point that the holiday was in doubt right up until the day before departure. We actually ran aground near Lechlade and that was the sign for us to turn back. I forgot to mention that I have also subscribed to Val's channel. Wow, some great songs and playing there. The saying goodbye song resonated with me too well, for I have been in that situation many times, on both sides. Best wishes to you both.

@@yeoldfart8762 happy birthday for the 21st. Yeah -28 is a bit much really, but I guess your houses and transport system are built for such temperatures. We get 3 inches of snow and it makes national news!

Pity you could not find the boaters final resting place .What a history and the boats with the “new built “Raymond .You’ve probably already been through but l always think the Friars Mill moorings preferable.Looking forward to the trip .

Hi Had to chuckle never meet another boat in a tunnel, I did once with a good wack. WHY he had got a good light but on at the back by him !! Which is where I thought the front of his boat was until we bounced off each other. Another funny tail, harecastle tunnel average 3/4 hour to hour, until got behind a slow fiberglass boat old lad on tick over felling the wall with his hands for most of the way, they where getting concerned and taking about sending in the boat to find him. 1 3/4 in there in a convoy. Steve
