You join Aslan & I where we left off in the previous episode, travelling along the Coventry Canal and now just a few miles from Fazeley Junction, where I plan to moor for the night.
In no time at all however, I spot a boat in the distance scraping along the side of a bridges' archway, and heading towards Aslan in a manner that tells me the pilot is either inexperienced, or inept, or intoxicated - or all three.
Despite leaving ample passing room (more in this instance), contact is inevitable and later I'm reminded why I keep a tin of paint onboard for such ocassions.
I'm also reminded that far too frequently, people struggle to acknowledge liability for their actions.

I found out a bit more about 'Forget-Me-Knot'. It's not a hire boat, but part of a boat share scheme (easily found on google). Basically a narrowboat timeshare. A lovely looking boat, save for an ugly green smear down the port flank! As such, one can imagine that there isn't a hire boat base to give any basic training to novice boaters.

Ah now that is interesting, Robin. Yes it was a fine looking craft, just not for much longer being treated like that. Wonder what scraping it down the side of the bridge did to the roof edge and gunnels.

@@robh69 Thanks Rob for pointing this out - it is a shared ownership boat built by Hexagon in 2010. The owner died and it was bought by a syndicate and based at Fazeley - my alarm bells started ringing when Kevin mentioned bow-thrusters (and I couldn't recall any hire boat operators near that spot). As someone who has followed Kevin from the start of his ventures, I'm really disappointed to see him making this lazy mistake and spreading such ill-will towards hirers.

I follow several narrowboat vloggers and occasionally there is a "conjunction" . Today it was a "Fazeley conjunction" with Aslan and Chugabug prowling the same waters (although the vlogs were done months apart). Reminds me of the time I watched two narrowboat vlogs where the boaters passed the same "porcelain throne" beside the Coventry Canal at bridge 14 (I think...). The vloggers were travelling in opposite directions and, of course, the vlogs were done months apart BUT the same majestic biffy viewed in all its glory twice, literally an hour apart. Perhaps the companies that hire out boats should shine a torch in one ear of some of these boat renters just to see if there actually is something in there that will prevent the light from exiting the other ear unimpeded! Those fools were probably "half in the bag" already (not a good thing when they are witless to start with!). As the saying goes..."you can't fix stupid"...it eventually fixes itself... one way or another...

I agree with you Kevin, on allot of stuff actually. The weatherman gives more or less a dooms day forecast involving MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of people in the path of a "destructive storm" that hasn't happened in 30-50 years. Well, that may be true, in some places. But I can remember when I was a kid, blizzards, feet of snow, floods and storms in the spring, hot summers, etc. It's always happened, just not every season/year. I do believe tho that we are destroying our planet with toxic chemicals, plastics, oil, air & water pollution. We need to clean it up NOW because this beautiful blue planet won't be fit to live on. Didn't Steve Hawkins tell us "we better be finding another habitable planet to live on because we are killing this one". Or something like that. Hey , take care out there and keep an eye out for those crazy first time boaters.

I watched a very similar thing happen going to Chester this past summer. Old bloke and his wife hopped into a lock with us just a short distance from the hire boat marina. The man “training” them had his hands full. I’m not sure the old bless should have been driving at all. I managed to help him get the boat into the lock next to us without smashing up our hire boat. We left first, and as we moved along at tick over past many moored boats, I looked back to see the old bloke racing towards us without a trainer anymore. He almost smashed into the back of us but hit reverse at the last minute and then hit every other boat in sight! Hours later, we were moored up near a popular pub for the night and he came around the corner and smashed HARD into several boats. In total, he scratched up a half dozen boats just in that encounter, and continued on his way. I less blame the hire boater and more the hire company. Some simply don’t give enough on board instruction and they should ultimately be liable. While it was nice, and also litigiously viable, for you to not show the faces of the twats, I’d think it okay to discuss the hire boat company itself. On our very first hire boat experience, we stupidly rented a 67 foot long behemoth in Trevor Basin, on the LLangollen!(I know how much you love the Lllan:). The bloke training us gave us 1.5 hours of instruction on how the boats systems worked. He asked us about locks. We mentioned we had watched some guy on KZbin(You) do it so how hard could it be? He stayed on the boat for about 15 minutes, which was halfway across the pontcysyllte aqueduct. He got off and walked back. On the other side I had to steer almost for the the first time! I was certain I was going to have a heart attack the first day. Miraculously, I never hit another boat the whole trip. The sides of the canal, yep! Still though, I’m amazed at how little instruction one is given at first. Now on our 6th hire journey, I’m fairly handy at it, for a hire boater:)

I am grateful it was only paint and no more serious damage was done. Considering it was industrious in the past, they are showing some reclamation even if unintentional.

There was recently an article about police in Britain 'persuing' a stolen boat along the canal, by walking along the towpath. An officer did say it was the slowest and longest chase he'd ever been involved in. In the end, they just waited until the genius onboard arrived at a lock and nicked the guy. :D

Crazy rude (possibly drunk)hire boat "driver"! They should have watched your first season as an example of how to cruise the canal with due care, attention and respect for other canal users! Great episode as always, thank you!

I have no doubt "They/he" would have a different opinion, if on returning to his car after his hire finishes, he found somebody had crashed into his car and scratched it all down one side. We now what you think of him and thoroughly agree.

Hi Kevin, when you are Polesworth way again there is a cracking Indian resto/takeaway above the Bulls Head pub close to the canal bridge. Give it a go and I don't think you will be disappointed. Also knowing that you appreciate a nice 'growler' try the butchers in Braunston village. Keep up the good work, all the best Chris.

A great video. I saw a few pals in this vid too. I took this route back in December, so it's interesting to see it through someone else's eyes. I was frozen in by the Co-Op at Glascote. It was a real life line. Sadly, the local gentry took it upon themselves to throw branches, rocks, bottles and cans onto the frozen ice.

Hi. I saw that a lot during the last freeze as well. Dumbasses don't realise or care that when it thaws, it all drops to the bottom until some poor saps propeller comes along. 🙄

Lovely to cruise along with you and Aslan, on a gentle day, and with all the fans giving you a wave... perfect. Cheers, from Tennessee, USA
