What makes this scene fantastic (for me) is the behind the scenes story: On the DVD commentary for the episode, the show's producers talk about how they purposely had Ray Romano start the fire (with a LIVE studio audience) in order to make the scene work. This was a real fire! No tricks. They planned the scene to have Patricia Heaton put it out (which worked), but incase the fire got TOO out of control they had 6 stuntmen armed with fire extinguishers to jump in just incase. LOL

Interesting to know this especially when you watch it and pay more attention to all the delays. - Ray taking more time on the phone - Ray pausing as he sees the fire for the first time - Then grabbing the soda can as if that's going to put out the fire, - Then running to get the short hose. - Changing the settings on the nozzle and eventually unscrewing the nozzle. Did the commentary mention if they used any flame retardant gel on the cupboards or anything of that nature?

Dont....use water on a kitchen fire as spilled grease on the stove may be a problem. DO have a fire extinguisher and KNOW how to use it. As soon as possible, turn off the gas, electricity to the burner. Put the fire out by aiming at the base of the fire. Then, spray as though you are putting the fire out again.

the problem about all that useful information is if you have a paralyzing fear of fire like i do, that information don't do shit. if i saw a big fire like that my instinct is to run the hell away and all the fire department. even if i had an extinguisher. sorry. there was almost a stove fire in our new house last year after the electric people came over and the alarm went off right before i went work. i was the only one left. the best i managed to do was turn off the stove and throw everything off it. there was no actual flames but the room was covered in smoke and i couldn't get the door to the outside opened. it was stuck and i was crying on the phone to my dad and everything. it was scary as fuck and again, that was without flames. so none of that information actually helps. if there is a fire like that, i'm running you over to get outside. sorry

He bought a short hose because he said that all you have to do is put your thumb over the top and the water sprays far. You notice that when Debra puts out the fire, it seems the fire is out but the bag of tissues starts to burn some more so she has to use it again.

Actually the DVD commentary revealed this wasn't a stunt fire. They wanted it to be realistic so they had Ray actually set a real fire and Debra actually put it out. They had 6 stunt firemen with extinguishers on set in case it got out of control.
