This was the last song my father heard. He was in love with music, a greaser in the fifties, heavy into rock all through the 60s, and loved the Red Hot Chili Peppers when I introduced him to them in the 90s. He was the person who introduced me to music. Music was one of the many things we had in common & we would sit and listen to our favorites together. In 2013 his old enemy cancer came back as a shadow on our lives, but instead of beating it like he did when he was in his 40s, this time it won. Right before he died he lost his ability to speak. I was sitting with him and I asked him if he wanted to hear a song. I knew what to play. He loved this song and weirdly he loved the movie it came from. I played it for him and he looked me in the eyes with tears. I held his hand and we listened to it together. The next night the priest came to say final rights for my father. After we finished praying the Divine Mercy prayer my father who couldn't speak for two days, forced out the words "thank you" he closed his eyes and passed away early in the morning on March 24th 2013. He was 72 years old. I made a memorial to my father and his life as a young man in the Navy to this song. Fair wind and a following sea till we meet again, Daddy.

This song was the title song for Midnight Cowboy and was written by Fred Neil. Fred Neil was a great folk singer/songwriter who seldom gets any recognition. Tthis song is one of his best but he is very worth checking out. He had a very mellow baritone voice that makes for a very laid back listening experience. Harry Nilsson also wrote a proposed title song for the movie, called "I Guess the Lord Must Be In New York City." It is one of Harry's best and really is a must listen

This came out right when my older cousin (he was 18, I was 10) left home without a word. Everyone in the family was distraught. My mother, who was very close to him, told me that this song described what she thought he was feeling. I don't think any connection to Midnight Cowboy was made. About 6 months later he called home. He had hitchhiked from NY to California, got some work to earn money to fly to Hawaii where he had been picking pineapples and surfing.

Ha! Andy suggesting Harry Nilsson would be a good guy to have a drink with. I remember a story from Mickey Dolenz (Monkees) saying Harry would show up at his house unannounced and Mickey would tell his wife, "Hey, honey, me and Harry are going out for a drink..." Then he'd wake up three days later in a massage parlor in Yuma and couldn't find his pants. Harry partied hard!

I find it fascinating that four songs from the Broadway musical Hair all reached the Billboard Top 5 - the 5th Dimension’s cover of “Age of Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In” reached number one, the Cowsill’s cover of the title track got to number 2, the aforementioned Oliver cover of “Good Morning Starshine” reached number 3, and Three Dog Night’s cover of “Easy To Be Hard” made it to number 4.

I have 11 Harry Nilsson albums... all great. You guys are going to listen to the song "Put the Lime in the Coconut" eventually... you might as well listen to it next. It's off of the Nilsson Scmilsson album... super unique song. You guys could easily do a whole album review on either Nilsson Schmilsson or Son of Schmilsson... both great albums... and you really, really need to listen to the entire "The Point" album. It is a story for everyone... half musical, half narration.

@@howardallan7849 Yes... I saw it when I was a kid. That animated movie was produced and narrated by Ringo Starr from the Beatles. They are both great. I like the album version a little better, but the songs are the same on both the video and the album. However, the album isn't a cartoon, so the album cannot compete there, but the album does come with a comic book insert and it is fun to follow along while you listen.

The album "The Point" is narrated by Harry Nilsson and in my opinion is much better than the animated version narrated by Ringo. But I would highly recommend both. Every child should listen to it... it addresses bigotry.

One of the very rare instances where a truly beautiful song weds seamlessly into a great movie. I cannot listen to this song without thinking of "Midnight Cowboy" - one of the saddest and most emotionally devastating movies ever made. "Everybody's Talkin'" is woven thoughout the movie at various times and the impact on the film is palpable. Plus . . . well, this was my dad's favorite song and I lost him to cancer within a year of this song hitting the radio. It's a beautiful song that chokes me up for about a thousand effing reasons. Miss you pop. He'd be thrilled that guys your age would be spinning this song and loving it 50 years later. Good on you.

I'm so glad you guys are discovering Harry Nilsson. By the way, he was The Beatles favorite American artist, and they became good friends. There are so many great Nilsson songs and albums. Oh, and someone correctly mentions below that you also need to check out Glen Campbell's "Gentle On My Mind" - "Galveston" - "By the Time I Get To Phoenix". The reason that relates to this is because of the guy who wrote them all. Jimmy Webb. Back in '67-68, Jim Webb was writing BIG HIT SONGS for bunches of people. Same quality & style and creativeness as Nilsson's writing, and they were contemporaries. Joni Mitchell also went through a similar era before she got famous. She was writing great hits for several people around this same time, as was another great lady songwriter, Laura Nyro. Getting back to Nilsson, he has so many flavors. Novelty & funny songs, sunny songs, serious ballads, and thinking person's songs. Some that you might be on the lookout for would be: ONE - THE PUPPY SONG - REMEMBER - 1941(His first hit) DON'T FORGET ME - YOU'RE BREAKING MY HEART** - I GUESS THE LORD MUST BE IN NEW YORK CITY - YOU CAN'T DO THAT(Beatles medley) - CAN'T LIVE - WITHOUT HER..... So there's a few of his great ones! There's lots to discover. PLUS, he did a wonderful soundtrack album for an animated TV Special called "THE POINT" in 1971. It had 2 or 3 hits on it, and several songs on it were covered by other artists. It's more like a regular Nilsson album than a Sountrack album because all of the songs have vocals. No instrumentals. No incidental music or 'Score'. You definitely need to check out the album, but the movie itself is worth you guys presenting, as one of your monthly films. GREAT STUFF!

It’s been mentioned that Fred Neil wrote this. He played at the Flick (by U of M) and Gaslight “coffee houses” in Miami and Coconut Grove in 60’s, early 70’s, sometimes with another local Miami great, Vince Martin. Simon and Garfunkel played these venues.

can you believe the Flick (under the new name The Titanic Brewery) is still open as a bar and music venue? Cool story time: Fred Neil was my dad. I was in a band that played a gig at the Titanic. My aunt was there to support us but spent most of her time telling the new owner about the Titanic's history as the Flick. The guy had no idea. I actually went to see Bobby Ingram (if that name means anything to you) play there once in it's new incarnation. When I was a very little kid my mom took me to see Odetta there. @@andyandalex Alex: what you said about leaning to play an instrument increasing your musical understanding is so true, script or not. Learning to play an instrument as an adult after never having much musical exposure as a child increased my musical appreciation immensely, even though I never came close to mastering the instrument.

"I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City" should be your next Nillson hit. Fantastic song. Also, you should check out the original of "Everybody's Talking", by the criminally neglected Fred Neil. Neil had the warmest of warm baritone voices and was a great songwriter - his song "Dolphins" has become a standard, covered by all sorts of artists.

I was introduced to Mr Nilsson thru a movie my brother and I watched all the time as kids called "The Point". Utterly beautiful soundtrack. Mine and my brothers favourite song was 'Are You Sleeping?' Nilsson's THE POINT! Tells a humorous story of Oblio, a pointless boy, in a land where everyone/thing has a point. Such a great imagination. It was later animated and also produced on stage.

Nilsson's album Pussy Cats with John Lennon is both amazing and at times tragically sad, since he had vocal cord damage during the making if it, and was perfectly fine recording his strained voice for a few tracks.

Fred Neil wrote and recorded this song a few years before Harry found it and recorded it for the Midnight Cowboy. I do like Harry's version a little better because his voice is amazing.
