long story short, he was very whipped for his girlfriend in college who was a murderer to the point that he was willing to consume the glass necklace that she gave him as a "present" (it had poison in it that she used to kill another dude with) to prove that she didnt do the murder that she totally did do im pretty sure all the poison was gone when he consumed that shit like the disaster bi he is, but he still like *ate glass* in *the middle of her trial* and had to go to the hospital also, side note, but, for more shipping fuel, phoenix was originally an art major and literally quit art school and started pursuing a law career bc he saw edgeworth in the papers and was like "oh fuck it's my childhood best friend who im totally not in love with and who moved away for some odd reason (bc his dad fucking died, you brainlet) and he's being called a twisted demon prosecutor in the news?? ive been sending him letters and he hasnt responded so i guess it's time to become a defense attorney so i can face off against him in court and he can stop ignoring me please pick up the phone miles i miss you" and that's that on that

And Phoenix (spiky hair) discovered that he became a prosecutor who was labeled as the “demon prosecutor”. Startled by the change in his old friend, Phoenix began studying law in hopes of meeting him within the courtroom and save him from darkness. A main part of Phoenix wanting to become a lawyer was to save people, especially Miles Edgeworth.
