I've been carrying IIIa backpack armor for about 6 years now. You just get used to carrying it and its comforting when you get your situational awareness activated.

My brother took a 9mm round to the back of his headrest last summer. Thank God for steel bars in '92 Honda headrests... now I have a grey man style SOG backpack with a polyethylene level lllA insert in the laptop compartment, which hangs behind my seat by the handle over the headrest bars in my truck. Also has a pistol compartment on the bottom with a larger secondary gun, holster, and mags. Spent less than $100 on the whole pack and armor. Very lightweight and flexible.

There was a Russian guy that ran into a mall with an AK and a ballistic backpack to stop an active shooter a while back. He never took any rounds, but instead was focused on getting people out so the structure was clear for emergency responders. Either way, still helps the brain knowing I've got something to help stop or slow rounds coming at me.

I can’t speak to anywhere else, but here in the US, the attraction has absolutely nothing to do with any practical need. The attraction is a lifestyle statement that you’re “the kind of person” who has a need for body armor. It’s grown men pretending to be in a make-believe army that exists only in their own head. They’re also commonly extremely fat, earning the insulting nickname “Gravy Seals.”

You don’t “have to” do anything and statistically, you’ll be fine. However, some of us like to consider all the options. It’s called personal choice.

@@joeblow9284 Lol, well obviously ridiculously out of shape old dudes remain free to choose to buy gear and pretend it makes them battle ready instead of what they really are, which is an easy loot drop.
