Every time I buy a small first aid kit, I always add a few types of antihistamines and indigestion meds in small baggies as well as a roll of antacid. Sometimes Neosporin if it isn't already included. Strangely those meds are rarely included but are the most frequently needed.

yes I put pepto tablets in my motorcycle first aid kit. putting small mundane things is always laughed at in a motorcycle first aid kit because of the implication you'd only open it if you were in an wreck. yes of course have the serious stuff, but I actually use the aspirin, the occasional band aid, the liquid bandaid, alcohol pad, etc. I use that stuff maybe once every 2 weeks.

We often get the random cut or scrape in the wild and ignore it because it's just a small wound. But we forget all the germs running loose out there. A first aid kit can protect it from infection and potentially save a lot of headaches later. Great review, Roy!

For a true everyday carry boo boo kit that I, no kidding, have in my pocket at all times: I use a 2"x4" 4mil thick ziplock bag. It holds 1x bite/sting wipe, 1x burn gel, 1x hydrocortisone, 2x aspirin, 2x ibuprofen, 1x benadryl, 2x antiseptic wipes, 2x bacitracin, 2x 2"x2" gauze, 2x small 2x medium 1x large bandaids, 3x 3"x0.25" Steri-Strips. It's about the size of a multi-tool. Pretty much everything comes in packs of 100+, so I replace anything I use at the end of the day.

Hydroseal bandaids, preferably BandAid™ brand, are a MUST have. They stick, require no antibiotic cream, stop minor bleeding and completely seal the boo boo. Yes, they're more expensive, but I'd rather use 1 $.75 bandage vs. 10 $.10 bandages. If you haven't tried these, you can come back and thank me later. Also, keep this stuff in a water box. I have one for toiletries and very minor first aid. Don't care if it falls off the kayak, gets left in the rain, salt water eats at it, don't care. First aid gear does not do well if damp. I use the MTM Survivor Dry Box off Amazon, small and large. They're cheap and the seals have never failed after 5-years of hard use.

There's also some deceptive marketing when it comes to first aid kits. Always check the contents of a kit you're looking to buy, because like Roy said, some of them are just full of things like small bandaids and small gauze strips. Several of the cheaper ones that claim to have a lot of items in them will count each individual small bandaid as a piece and don't actually contain a lot of other useful things, even though they might claim to be a 200+ piece kit. A trauma kit is more useful for serious injuries and will come with things like tourniquets, pressure bandages, splints and the like. It's not a bad idea to get both and just combine them into one kit.

Very informative presentation Roy, during my thirty-four-year career I had to be an instructor for pub-ed and one of the topics was first aid kits. I had taken a SAR-Tec class earlier and used the information from Fundamentals of Search and Rescue for the contents of a personal first aid kit, The Boo-Boo Kit. I also took recommendations from my EMT and EMT continuing education classes on assembling a Trauma Kit. I am looking forward to the Trauma Kit presentation. Roy, I noted you are still on the job I wish you Safe Shift and Safe Career. Best wishs to Paul and the rest of the crew.

Here's the "Average Dude Medi-Kit" Bandaids of various types, 90% ethanol, medications(Benadryl-tylenol-ibuprophen-immodium-zofran-calcium tablets) both antibiotic cream & ointment, Vaseline, iodine tablets, cloth bandages, TWO tourniquets, chest seals. The best thing to carry on you, in your truck, in a back pack etc which will be extremely easy to rotate to ensure they aren't old and unused.Get a pack of menstrual pads, extra absorbent and a box of heavy flow tampons. Plus the mandatory bandages, scissors and smaller wound dressings. Even women's panty liners which are along to same line as the pads and tampons. The pads should he self explanatory for gun shot wounds slapon a pad secure it for transport and apply pressure and elevation if it's deemed to be useful. Now your probably thinking why put tampons in an emergency first aid field kit. Depending on the calibre that someone in your group has had it go through their body. If there is a large calibre entry wound then a tampon may be easier to use to plug up the entry point but the use a large pad or or two on the exit wound. Bandage, apply pressure and elevate where and if necessary. It's far more economical and frankly more useful in the urban setting, to carry menstrual pads, panty liners and tampons alongwith binding tape even if its simply masking tape etc. All you looking for is something with sufficient absorbancy and in some cases a large pack is more useful when their are multiple gaping gun shot wounds. After all, the faster you stop blood loss and transport to a medical facility, the better the chances of survival. Frankly, even people who don't carry or use guns, these supplies should be mandatory to carry in case of an emergency. I have known of a truck driver's life was saved simply because one of the first people oto arrive to assist the injured in a massive crash, happened to ask the truck driver, what he was carrying in his load. The first question any first aider should ask first of a truckie, what are you carrying. Firstly you need to know how dangerous or safe the scene is if carrying inflammable materials or not. On finding out the truck was carrying feminine products, the rescuer immediately got someone to access some of the load for first aid purposes. Even a sealed package of unsed toilet paper, could save some one's live. But remember, to always check.the area is safe to the victims as well as those trying to assist at the scene until ambulances arrive.

I use a small tri-folding pack for my EDC minor first aid, it fits nicely into cargo trouser pockets without being too bulky yet contains all the usual stuff (plasters, wipes, gauze, bandage, etc) the difference being it's enough for 1 or 2 boo-boos at a time, which is fine as long as you are disciplined enough to remember to top it up after use. EDC CAT tourniquet, Israeli dressing and packing gauze fit nicely into two small belt pouches, enough for self rescue or a single casualty which in most cases is all you will ever get at once. My van & all my backpacks have duplicate kits and larger ones, but aren't with me 24/7 if out of home - just like the analogy with size/calibre firearms the EDC medical kit you can easily carry every day is better than the one you leave behind/in your vehicle.

I do have an EDC first aid / trauma kit, that I constructed, but it's very small because it has to fit in a compartment of my shoulder bag that I carry everywhere. For scale, the compartment was originally meant to hold a pistol of Glock 19 size. The kit contains nitrile gloves, CAT tourniquet, QuickClot Combat Gauze, regular gauze and trauma shears. On the first aid side, it has band aids, disinfectant and two shots of liquid sugar. I also have a few essential medications in the bag and a miniature headlamp. Most importantly, I know how to use all those items.

I always stick a sewing needle in my little pocket first aid kits I keep at work in the car, because none of those ever come with anything good for removing slivers, the most common reason my husband and I need the first-aid kit at work. One thing I really need to remember to get next time I'm at the drug store is an eye wash cup. I've never seen those in any kits and a full eye wash station takes up a lot of real estate, and is definitely a thing that can be needed. I don't keep meds like antihistamines or anti-inflammatories in the kit though, those live on me so I can make sure they're not expired more easily, and they're maintained at my temperature rather than wherever the kits are stored (like the one in the car).

One easy way to differentiate a first aid kit from a trauma kit is if what that kit is meant to treat something you can shrug off or something that will stop you from coming back home safely. The best option for me is to tailor-make your own kit, beginning with a basic trauma kit for hemorrhage control and building it up based on your needs and knowledge. I usually end up with a fairly decent trauma kit with a basic first aid kit on top.

First Aid in general is insanely important. I don't know about the USA, but here in Germany before you are even allowed to take a Driver's License Test you have to have succesfully finished a "First Aid Course". Is that also a thing in the US? if not, it should be. Then besides that, having served in the German Military for 6 Years with 2 Afghanistan Deployments and 1 to Kosovo via KFOR i probably did about 14 Yearly First Aid Courses. In Germany you also have to have a First Aid Kit in your Car as mandatory Equipment. Because if you end up seeing an Accident on the Autobahn etc. you're legally obliged to come help out (while also calling "911" (110 for Police and 112 for Emergency Forces in Germany). Point being: I feel learning about First Aid and how to use a First Aid Kit should be a yearly mandatory Trraining for every single Person in every Country. Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps - and if you ever (like many Americans) have an Accident hiking, mountaineering, driving etc. here, you can be certain the first German seeing you will apply proper and safe First Aid while also calling the Professionals

My car also has a bag with a proper tourniquet, a space blanket or two (helpful if someone is in shock), a chemical cold pack or two (especially if it's hot out), and a few other things that I consider essential. And more of the "owie boo boo" stuff. I absolutely agree with the German commenter who says that everybody should have some solid first aid training, and continuing education to keep the skills sharp and adjust as best practice evolves.

If you have a first-aid kit, it's not a bad idea to go through it at least every few months and replace anything that has expired or will expire soon. You wouldn't want to put a bandage on that might have questionable sterility. Also, that 20-year-old acetaminophen might not cure your headache, so don't hang onto it too long after its date, either.

I have a question unrelated to this video. Many many MANY people advocate tap, rack, shoot as part of training. If that becomes your muscle memory where you dont look at your gun anymore but go through muscle memory, what happena if you have a squib and you still have that ingrained muscle memory? Do you advocate tap, rack, shoot as part of self defense malfunction training or should you actually look at your gun to ensure it will work?

Roy here. A couple things to say here. If you are working in "the box" in front of your face you should be able to see any exterior malfunctions such a misfeeds or failure to ejects and fix them accordingly. In your scenario you would not see the bullet stuck in the barrel unless you empty (unload) the firearm and look down the barrel. That would be costly in an actual self defense situation. The self defense training now is tap, rack, reassess. Reason being you may not be justified in shooting again. But to your squib load question, hopefully you feel or hear that round go off differently and think to check the barrel. Hope this helps.

Would tampons be handy for bleeding or slowing the bleeding
@PaulHarrell
@PaulHarrell 5 ай бұрын
Wait for the trauma kit vid this weekend. I will say there are A LOT of commercial products available to stop bleeding. I have nothing else, yes tampons work.
@alberttrevorson2386

I have no experience with tampons (I'm a man). But from my understanding, most tampons have something on or in them that is meant to prevent/reduce blood clotting. So they aren't actually meant to stop bleeding, their job is to just absorb . Again, this is just MY UNDERSTANDING of the subject, I could be mistaken.

Benadryl. My apologies i missed it but benadryl belongs in every first aid kit. It will slow down an allergic reaction long enough for ems to arrive.

I always personally put a small toothbrush, toothpaste, toothpicks, and dental floss in med kits. Dental hygiene can be just as important as all other medical needs and it keeps you in a routine if you are in the outdoors on a hike or hunting.

I carry a flossing tool everywhere. Usually it's something like spare ribs that get me, within a few minutes it can be quite uncomfortable and the gum quite swollen
@RedZeppelinAirship
@RedZeppelinAirship 5 ай бұрын
@@JimboXX78 I tend to have a pack of toothpicks and flossing sticks in my glovebox of my car just in case I get a popcorn kernel or something similar between my teeth. I also have some of that gums numbing stuff that you get at the grocery store and a few q-tips to apply it, in case I cut my gums. I have paid way too much money in dental work to have another 1000 dollar problem of tooth decay and the pain that comes with it. Too many people overlook dental hygiene and have to get their teeth ripped out, and it’s far better to do preventative maintenance.
