Dr. J: Artificial intelligence has been a popular subject of discussion recently - and it will likely remain an important issue for years to come. But how might we connect grammar with artificial intelligence?
Dr. J: Let’s watch John Russell “chat” with an AI program. He is asking the program some questions.
John: Am I smart?
AI program: No, you are definitely not.
Dr. J: We can divide questions into two types - yes or no questions and questions for information. John used the verb BE in his question to ask a yes or no question: Am I smart?
The AI program gave an answer that John did not like. But what John needs to learn is the secret to good discussions is asking questions for information.
[John Russell talks while typing
John: How can I become smarter?
AI: You could try reading books, learning about math, science, languages, and history.
Dr. J: Let us compare our yes or no question with the question for information.
The yes or no question begins with the verb BE. We have BE + subject + rest of sentence.
John: Am I smart?
Dr. J: The question for information is:
John: How can I become smarter?
DR. J: We have the question word “how,” a modal verb, the subject, a main verb, and the rest of the sentence.
Although our example question began with “how,” questions for information might also begin with question words such as “what” or “why.”
John: Am I smart now?
AI: No, you need to read more books.
Dr. J: And that’s Everyday Grammar TV.
