Just want to say that I had a neon color skirt tetra that was severely bloated. It did have the pine coning going on and I really thought the salt bath would be too late, but I tried it anyway. Well the next day he looked a little less bloated, then the second day, wow!!! He was back to normal. I am shocked because I really thought it was too late. The salt bath worked!! And I did 12-13 min in it. He did not freak out when I put him in it like others said and he didn’t seem to react any different in it other than breathing faster. I picked him up with my hand gently to put him back in his community tank and it was so much better than the net, which DID freak him out.

For anyone watching unsure of what to do, I felt the same way. I tried using the Epsom salt bath though, and so far I can say it worked well. Its a pretty inexpensive treatment compared to medicine. I pretty much did the 1 tablespoon (I only have one-half teaspoon measurements, so 6 of those) and probably went a little under. I mixed it well with a quarter of the water, then again at half, and finally at full. After that I left my 2 corydoras in there for 10 minutes freaking out every time they stopped moving for too long. I put them in a breeder pen in their normal tank for the night, and in the morning they were very happy. I used it because they kept floating to the surface. Their symptoms only showed up a few hours before I gave them the bath. I am still monitoring them to see if it happens again. This comment isn't to act like the video doesn't have good information. Everything I did was based off of the video and adjusted for the size of my tank (10 gallons). I just wanted to post good results and a little story because I know I was nervous and scared trying it for the first time yesterday. Just be confident and if you don't have precise measurements, it wont harm them if you put a little less like if would if you put too much. Good luck to you all and thanks for the video.

@Maria Diep I don't think you should. It also depends on the size of your tank and why you're using it. The best method to use is giving them a salt bath that way they're only exposed to it for a short period of time and then they can relax in their normal habitat. I checked some online sources and some of them agree that you should avoid putting 1/8 of a tablespoon (a teaspoon is 1/3) for every 5 gallons. If you have a 10 gallon tank then 2 teaspoon could pass but you should do a water change after a few hours and then another one the next day. Too much exposure can lead to other issues like irritation. This is why it's better to have a bath in a separate bowl or have a separate "hospital tank" because you really don't want to overexpose them to these types of things. Make sure you monitor your water parameters regularly when you are making changes to your tank. If you already added the salt then I'd suggest getting a few tests done then changing the water just in case. The fish won't show signs of sickness until they're too sick.

She was bloated and her fins were expanded out too.... it looks like the fins are not expanded anymore but her body is still bloated. She swims a bit but she rest upside-down. But no fast moving gills ... my question is...i already gave her an Epsom salt bath yesterday.... how often can we give a fish an Epsom salt bath...should I give her another one bath and put her back into the hospital tank... please help me

@@carolgurley8354 you can do it once or twice a day, but make sure to monitor her and make sure she isn’t too stressed. Personally I would only do it once a day. 2 treatments was enough for my corydoras, but if you need to do more then that is fine.

This is a very helpful video. The most helpful I've found on KZbin concerning epsom salt. I've treated my fish when they are constipated with the doses described in the video and it works every time. I haven't used the bath treatments, so I can't comment on the effectiveness, but if I need to do need to do a bath in the future, I will follow this dosage without stress because of the research you've done. I have a powder blue Gourami, who get's bloated once in a while, and he always get's better after I dose to your recommendation. Thanks and as you guys say in the UK, cheers mate!

When treating your entire tank, be sure to do as little as possible as magnesium sulfate also is very effective in raising your GH without affecting KH or pH!!! Dissolve 2 tablespoons in 1 cup of tank water and wait 10-15 minutes for it to fully dissolve.. then add 1/4 cup per 10 U.S. gallons to your tank. 1 full cup per 40 U.S. gallons. If your tank water is really hard already, it’s better to take the fish out of the tank and give the fish an epsom salt bath for 20-30 minutes!!!

Thank you for this! I have neon tetra, danios, red eye tetra, swordtail, dalmations, otto, and Cory catfish in a 40 gal. I lost a swordtail, this morning-it was looking a little fat last night but nothing to raise my concern however this morning it was HUGE but I noticed no raised scales, but it looked like the insides were pushing out. I have a zebra Danio that looks in much worst condition (but I don't notice any raised scales) than the swordtail I lost. I see swelling on a neon/maybe 2, and I have another swordtail acting lethargic. I was so worried about treating the whole tank but I think I should being that I have 3 possibly 4 other fish showing bigger bellies than usual.

Depends on the material you take in the spoon, it gives the volume but different compounds have different weight for same volume.

My koi developed a bloated tummy just this week, noticed it within a couple days. I followed this yesterday and again just now. No change yet, I didn't feed today, not noticing any poo from him, but noticing that the bloat is larger on the right side. No signs of injury, normal coloring, eyes not bulging, scales not really sticking up, but on the right side, I can see where they would if it gets any worse. Super worried, how many times can I do this bath and is there anything else I can do? I'm worried about my scaley kid. Help?

@Everyday Aquarist, thank you very much for the video. It cured my Goldfish yuan bao and short tail ryukin. I put them in the hospital tank of 5 litres + 25 grams of Epsom Salt for 10 minutes. I have added 5 grams into 162 litres aquarium tank. Is this enough? When I do weekly change water of 30% - 40%, how many grams of Epsom Salt shall I add in ? Please advise. Thank you.

I have a question.....if I use the bath method in a bucket of 1 gallon of tank water to 1 tbsp of Epsom salts, how often should I use this method to ensure they get better? Is it a one time treatment?

Mine are only modestly constipated (new tank, more fish and overestimated the feeding!) and will do the 1/8 per 5USG alongside peas and broccoli. I regard the bath thing as a last resort tactic.

Thinking ... For US 10 gallons of water use 1/4 teaspoon of Epson Salt. For small concentrate solution about (300ml) for 10-15 minutes bathing and adding to aquarium. 1/4 teaspoon Epson Salt bath 1 US gallon = 3785.45 : 3 : 4 = 315.45 ml. (1 Tbs = 3 Tsp, so divide by 3, then divide by 4 (1/4 tsp). After bathing return fish and solution to aquarium.

Hi! I’m trying to figure out if my fish has dropsy or is just bloated. I’ve given him two epsom salt baths once a week for the last two weeks. How long should I keep giving him epsom salt baths till I’m supposed to see a difference? Trying to figure out how long I should go before I move onto medicine.

I have a roughly 6-8 inch comet goldfish with dropsy in a 10k+ gallon pond. None of the other 40 or so fish in there have any problems but this one has dropsy. It has bloated slowly over several months, i originally thought it was eggs until the scales started to pinecone. I do not believe the problem is anything other than bad genetics because it's a comet based on none of the other fish being affected for several months. But I want to relieve the bloating with salt. Once I remove him from the pond and put him in a quarantine tank what kind and how much salt should I use to suck the water out that is swelling him?

UK tablespoons are larger than US tablespoons, by a factor of about 1.2. So roughly 1 UK tablespoon per 4.5 litres of water, which is 1 US gallon x 1.2. We're trying this on our very constipated goldfish right now.
@nigelpollitt5124
@nigelpollitt5124 3 жыл бұрын
He's still constipated, 12 hours later, but perkier, so we'll give him another bath with the salts at the adjusted ratio (for UK/US spoon ratios) or 1 UK tablespoon (from a measuring spoon set) to 4.5 litres of water, treated with dechlorinator and kept in that bath for 10 minutes.
