My 10 year old comet Goldie passed today, he was in the late stage of dropsy. 2 months ago, people would comment, how come he looks so plump and not knowing about dropsy I figured he had just gain weight. I wish I knew to treat him then. The last two weeks, it was obvious he had internal bleeding, it was heartbreaking to see him like that. I gave him a salt bath but I knew it was too late. He would swim at the top, almost upside down. He was a carnival goldie, he was tiny when I got him and grew up to be a foot long. I buried him 2 hours ago. God rest his soul.

This is a wonderful video of a dedicated and humane fish fan. When my aged albino goldfish showed symptoms of dropsy, this video helped save her life. Alas, years later my fish is showing the same symptoms. (I suspect her albinism means that she is immunocompromised.) I looked up this vid again and with the help of this, plus "The Truth About Goldfish"- Meredith Clawson's excellent book on goldfish care, I'm crossing my fingers for the recovery of my fish.

When it became clear she was dying I euthanased her humanely ie anaesthetised her with a few drops of clove oil in tank water and while she was unconscious I added a couple of bottles of vodka to the container (1 would have sufficed I think) and she died without regaining consciousness. It was a very painful and difficult thing to do but for her it was a painless and easy death. Many thanks for asking. Brian

@@keniag5 Sorry for the tardy reply. My poor fish did not respond to treatment and so I was obliged to euthanise her. It was dreadful but she had as good a death as I good give her. It's all in Meredith's book but in short, make up a solution of clove oil and warm water, add it to a small vessel that you have carefully transferred your fish to and your fish will be anaesthetised. As soon as it is clear that s/he is unconscious add a bottle of vodka to the water and your fish will die painlessly while unconscious.

We lost five more goldfish about ten years old and had a three year old pine cone come up near the surface. We could not believe there was any hope for saving this fish, but after seeing your video and applying your most of your treatment method after three weeks we successfully released this fish back into the pond. So thank you for guiding us and giving direction that led to a wonderful outcome.

Thank you for sharing these tips! Really, I cant praise you enough for this. It means a lot and is so helpful (as always). Informational videos like yours are relieving. Others dont often share what they have learned! I know it isnt easy to share trial/error (with the general public), so I really can NOT express my thanks enough. I remember, as a teenager (before I knew any better), I bought some fish from walmart. Both fish died within 72 hours of the purchase, one about 24 hours before the other. I do believe they had dropsy, I've suspected it for years, actually. Seeing your video confirms what I believed, as both had all of the symptoms. I was unequipped to deal with them (being 13 at the time and reliant on my poverty-stricken, single mom of 4). I am an advocate against walmart fish, and any pet store selling pets for the wrong reasons, for that matter. I do believe there needs to be some law in place that prevents commercial pet sales to the uninformed/unequipped (or atleast without the absence of an educated care-teaching professional).

I always tried to treat but I guess my patience and knowledge wasnt good enough then. I had 2 large Fancy goldfish recently that I rescued and just rehomed bc I realized I couldn't keep up with the 2x a week water changes in a 40 gal with spiking ammonia (I had to go to fish store for water bc tap is too harsh) and I was slowly killing them and it wasn't fair. They are now in a goldfish pond with other goldfish. So I'm sticking with betta and smaller tanks and my new found knowledge thanks to you. I'm glad to see shes in a nice big tank and maybe one day shell get a friend.. If they like friends lol. 🙃 I'm glad I found your channel. Thanks for being patient and a good fish mommy!

What spurs me to treat is the behaviour of the fish. If the fish will eat and swim and seems like it wants to fight, then absolutely I will try to treat, but if it seems like the fish has given up and the dropsy is severe like this case, I may not want to treat. I’m going to do everything I can to help him. Ugh I can’t believe it though... I’ve been keeping an assortment of tropical fish for 2 years and I still have horrible foresight with diseases, always catch them once the most obvious symptom has set in, despite hours and hours of research. Really hoping my little fella will pull through. If the pineconing isn’t gone in 2 days of epsom salt treatment, I’ll be doing the double-tank technique. I highly recommend this advice 👍 I had a goldfish on the way out with dropsy , and thought give it a go, I live in Australia so couldn’t source the medication in this clip, my aquarium shop recommended Aquaria-Cycline tablets which are antibiotic , I put him in a 10 litre tub with heater and 1 teaspoon of Epsom Salts, 1/2 a tablet and water ager , an air bubble stone to oxygenate the water ( not to vigorous as he was weak ) and crossed my fingers . Every morning I scooped him and a bit of his water into a bowl while I quickly tipped out his container and gave him all fresh again, repeating the preparation, then I put him back in for another day 🤞 You slowly notice the improvement, scales flattened and he began to eat , I couldn’t get any medicated food ,I did put mushed peas minus their shell ,but he ate his regular food, his poos went back to normal and I knew he was on the mend. Thank you for all your time and efforts into compiling this video and my little goldfish says ❤️

I know it's been a while, but are you sure you used Epsom Salt? In this video Aquarium Salt was used, which is not Epsom salt. Aquarium salt is Sodium chloride which actually draws moisture into the body and will have devastating effects to a fish with Dropsy. Epsom salts is magnesium sulphate which is a natural laxative and draws fluid out of the body.

As an angler and 55 years old as well as such a loving woman. Yes, this woman went through Christmas and new year dealing with or dedicating a goldfish which obviously had pinecone. It's technically called oesmostitis. Also, a pear-shaped going yellow she wasn't looking after water quality. Another reason for this fish being ill was, this goldfish should have a tank which doesn't have ANY draughts. Wake up to draughts. Glass has this problem. Long periods of loudness and cold exposed position, and too much strive filth going on. Or a gish I would have passed by if I was yo choose a healthy fish. Butter is not healthy. A weakling dhould be killed. Not dold to a erm hobbyist. Fish need company believe me. If you have a goldfish on their own, it's cruelty. Ipso Factorem. They are very social. Just think of yourself being put in a strange tank, 1st loss, then being in that tank alone, your second mistake, then nevermind water quality. If purchasing a river puppy, keep them together ftom your fish store. Makes for huge tanks, but Butters needed a companion. A friend swimmer. Flone, fear snd dread am I Nobody to live for nobody to love. Yes, you need yo know how lonely life is, if you are in s beautiful happy huge indoor heated pond with another friend. It's not a hobby. Its life. These beauties need another friend. They really need fresh water going through their gills. Yhink on before keeping a big Goldie in shit done and gluctuating bubbles and a bad heater, clean every day and get 2 males, they are very good for 2 in an indoor deep above level pond. It's rubbish about taking them out to clean them. Everyday. Do not overfeeding them. Peas are great. But bloodworm makes for a healthy lad. I love this woman. She did everything she was told. Instead of being bold. By putting another goldfish in a cutesome indoor set up pond with a cover like fine mesh. A few plants, a good filter, using uv in a sump is OK. But what helps slow movers is at lest 3 foot of water sand and restricted pump every day ducksjoneypie up their shite. Use a bucket sump, air stones, replenish nailed water to vlean your cleaners. Buying submersible plants, keep another glass aquarium and the ones Bern in there, swill them yhrough your tap test that tap water as it changes, you know. Use Aquasafe on the water very little. Scrub the sides of your tank get rid of excess lime, if using a heater don't just accept it to behave. Just vegan out everyday. If you get in the knowledge of no fish do not get stressed by viewing out, just you do. Now they get used to you. Play a guitar. Loads of noisy badtards are going yo stress your goodies. They love music, like all living beings. Nice guitar playing. Talk to your goldfish. Or any gish. Do not use garlic unless yo detoxify the tank without the goldgishies in. Do not feed garlic to goldfish. Vlean water is the rule of thumb. I am 55 years knowledge. A duck fish is your fault.😮

I wonder if I can use the same treatment for my betta fish dropsy? I lost my previous betta girl due to this very same disease, and I hope I could cure the other boy.. Tried everything so far but to no avail... Anyway, thanks for sharing your detailed explanations. I'm so, so, so happy for you that Butter made it! I hope more fish could be saved from all kinds of diseases.

My betta fish Jellybean has survived dropsy! I think Kanaplex + Epsom salts (1tsp / gallon) is what did it. Paracleane and Marycyn didn’t help at first.

Treating mine today with tetracycline (I already have it). Wasn't sure what it was and wasn't too worried... but now it's been a few days and I'm finally realizing it's dropsy. I'll consider salt if she hangs in there. I used to keep my tank brackish and never had problems.

Glad you are a thorough researcher but I noticed an aquarium in the background with a critter wheel inside. From one pet lover to another I wanted to say you should look into getting a cage with better air circulation (wire cages) because it can cause respiratory issues in small rodents being in aquariums.

Just saw your video. Such a detailed video. So glad Butter is better. One question. Why did you raise the temp?
@LorisHartland
@LorisHartland 4 жыл бұрын
Raising the temp to 80’ while using epsom helps remove the fluid from the body. I TOTALLY forgot to explain this in the video, but I did mention keeping the temps at 80 and it is needed!

My goldfish is experiencing similar symptoms….I don’t have the space or resources to set up a whole separate hospital tank, I just have a bucket that I use for epsom salt baths. Can I dose kanaplex directly into his tank? He’s the only fish in there but I have a couple snails and 1 live plant. And it’s got some rocks and decorations. I always see people use just empty tanks for treatment but that’s not really feasible for me…

We bought a Thai Oranda from East Coast Ranchu right at the same time you did. I think it was the same night. Ours looks very similar - now named Bindi from the marking on her forehead. I believe Butter is one we were also looking at that same evening when you bought it from the same parents as Bindi. Anyway, I am sorry you had the problem with Dropsy.

Lucky Epsom in the actual tank didn’t harden the water, and therefore change pH, which is why I’m doing a separate bath

Hi Lori! I lost my Betta fish yesterday to dropsy, on only day two of treatment. I believe I caught it too late because it was really bad. We had him for about 2 years and seven months, plus his life at the fish store, which I heard was about a year old. After we burry him, my dad thinks I should get a new one, but I don’t know. Is it too soon?
