I had the opportunity to meet up with SpaceX CEO, Founder and Chief Engineer, Elon Musk as well as NASA Administrator, Jim Bridenstine to get their thoughts on this new era of human spaceflight!
We spoke in the historic Firing Room 4 at Kennedy Space Center where SpaceX will command the rocket to launch for Demonstration Mission 2 with Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley!

What was so excellent about his interview was it was *informed*. Like, he's not some pretty-face reporter asking stupid questions. He's someone informed asking questions and pushing for more information. It was an excellent interview, especially the last few minutes where he wanted some totally reasonable explanation on how that partnership between NASA and commercial partners would work. Good on Tim.

@@mlc4495 he meant that about testing rockets without crew. When NASA tests a rocket if it explodes the media will jump on it and they could lose their some of their budget. When SpaceX tests rockets it's okay if it explodes because they aren't going to lose their funding because of it because they are a private company. Think about how SN 1, SN 3 and SN 4 exploded in the pressure test. SpaceX can build those in a few weeks and test to improve the design much faster than testing individual components.

Tim is probably one of the best spaceflight journalists out there, and especially when it comes to covering SpaceX and interviewing Elon Musk. It's obvious he enjoys being interviewed by him, and who wouldn't? So knowledgable about everything from the history of spaceflight to the cutting edge design of SpaceX. He makes an interview with Elon Musk into a nerd out about space or just a casual conversation about the coolest stuff on earth (or in space). I loved the comment about elons old password "is the 9 for nine merlin engines?", he just knows what he's talking about, and he seems to know Elon too!

SPECTRE were idiots. Or Mr Osato if it was developed by Osato Chemicals. Bird One could have easily been upgraded into a fully re-usable launch system that with it's existing upper stage could have delivered cargo or crew to orbit. They'd solved the big problem of recovering the upper stage and precision landing, so recovering the lower stage would have been far easier, given the additiuonal infrastructure of a landing pad downrange. Extend the length of the first stage by 50%, and add two more engines at right angles to the existing two edge mounted motors and it could have carried around 5 tons in it's nose mounted payload bay. Remove the crew section and you could probably bump that to 10 tons. Or replace the payload bay with a pressurised cabin and you could transport a dozen passengers to and from orbit. There might even be enough volume to use it as a short term space station for a couple of astronauts.

Everything Jim says is just pure gold for anyone interested in the basic principles of public-private partnership that is keeping SpaceX on track for Mars and NASA viable as a public institution. Whenever a man like Jim uses words like "new era", one should pay attention. Tim isn't meeting rocket engineer Musk here. He's meeting two leaders of their respective organizations which are in symbiotic relationship, and if a mission goes to h***, they're in it together. Tim was caught off-guard by Jim's presence and still manages to engage them on their mutual interest. There was perhaps a bit more on offer here had Tim been more prepared, but frankly it's ridiculous he even got there to film this amazing video.

Mad jealous that you get to interview these 2 guys but so glad that you do. It’s always a quality interview and Elon definitely appreciates your enthusiasm.

Proud of you Tim. You are doing a good job of bringing really good news for all of us. In my opinion, this is way more than launching American astronauts from American soil. This is a big leap for humanity.

I always like to think Tim has a special place in the heart of Elon when he gets this comfortable. Wonderful to see, really.
