I friggin love this video. For the curious, I think the use case for the Honda is Japanese urban train commuters. You can’t bring bikes on trains there (unless they’re in a bag), so a last-mile scooter that folds into its own carry case and can take advantage of the really excellent urban cycling infrastructure in Japan is actually a super cool idea.

Their unpack test at the start was embarrassingly bad too, the guy unpacking the the Honda clearly didn't really know what he was doing and the guy unpacking the Brompton did. He unpacks the Brompton in 17 seconds while the guy unpacking the Honda fiddles around for those 17 seconds doing like 3 actions that clearly would only take about 3 or 4 seconds total if he had done it a couple of times. Either you need to get a couple of random people to do each version and see the difference or you need to be extremely familiar with both and then test how quick you can do it.

This is disingenuous. Where does Honda's marketing show the Motocompacto being used? Sidewalks, college campuses, paved walking trails... places where it will commonly be sharing space with pedestrians. It's not meant for rough terrain or skate parks, nor is it meant to be fast or nimble or have lots of torque. It's meant to get you around flat, level environments, with a long battery life, without having to pedal, at a speed that's faster than jogging but not so fast that it puts other people in danger. I'm really impressed that it held up as well as it did to the utter nonsense that you put it through.

Hey Seth, you should really check out/learn how to ride an electric unicycle. When it comes to form factor for a last mile device, they are pretty much unmatched and they're also really fun. Hope you read this.
@aXionXero5 ай бұрын
They're also capable of being much more than just a last mile device. I use 1 (of the 4 I have 😅) as my main vehicle. I don't own a car and I work almost 15 miles from home. I ride it year round down to 0° (F-reedom 😉) and with a leather riding suit, motorcycle helmet and heated vest, I'm pretty darn cozy (and jamming to my stereo music 🎶😁). And in anything less than a downpour, I stay almost completely dry, and the wheel is totally fine. Mine (Begode Ex30) does 50 mph and at that speed it can get around 40 miles (double that at slower speeds). It is super lush and comfortable, with a plush suspension, and it's an absolute blast to ride. I look forward to my daily commute (still get road rage, though, as I'm going traffic speed and drivers are still 🤬 sometimes 😂) Then I wheel it into work and charge it there... I never need to pay for gas or electricity or find a parking space... If traffic gets too heavy or if road closures pop up - as they're wont to do 😅 - i just hop on the sidewalk and (slowly) breeze by all the annoyance. I roll it into stores (wearing my whole silly stormtrooper gettup, which I think looks dorky, but have had so many people say is super cool looking 😂) and have never had anyone say anything bad. I've even gone to a day at the movies, watching (and paying for 😉) 3 different movies in 3 different theaters, each on the opposite side of the last. So I wheeled it into and across the lobby of an Emagine 4 times throughout the day and never had a negative word. 🤩 I really couldn't love it anymore (I mean, as a whole, I could always love any particular one that went further faster, more. 😉) I highly recommend one to everyone even considering the option. 👍😁

@aXionXero5 ай бұрын
@@kenanjones3481 Well, only 45 usually. 😉 If there's no wind, it's quite easy and "chill". I literally just stand there. I liken it to mind control transportation 😁... It's a bit hard to explain what I mean without experiencing it, but you're not really actively "doing" anything. You just kinda think "I wanna go faster" or "I wanna go over there a bit", and you do it. (I know that sounds silly, like how everything works, but it really is a unique experience in my opinion) However... If there is wind, it's a whole other story. 😅 You gotta sorta use your body as a rudder to micro, or more than micro, adjust fairly constantly or you'll be all over the place. You can also just lean into it, and you're almost sucked forward... But then you gotta watch you're not going over speed. Heh. It's all a blast, honestly. I can't ever see myself getting a car or any other means of transportstion. 👍😁

There's been a couple times where I need to "slam on the brakes", and I've never had an issue. If I'm waiting at a light, I can turn after a car passes at 40 mph and be directly behind them within a second or two. All that acceleration power is the exact same power used for stopping. It's incredible.

A fairly new subscriber to this channel and had been loving the content so far, but gotta say this video really missed the mark. Even going along with the questionable comparison of a human-powered fold-up bicycle to the battery-powered sit-down scooter, it was frustrating to watch how unfair the evaluation of the Motocompacto was. Full disclosure, I do own one myself. The two biggest issues both lie in the apparent lack of any effort to learn about even the basics of the Motocompacto's operations before making the video. First, the "unfold speed" test was abysmal. Seth is clearly very fluid and practiced with unfolding the Brompton, whereas the other guy was still figuring the Motocompacto out. There is definitely an "order of events" that *has* to happen in that sequence for the Motocompacto, but once you get some practice, I'm certain it would match or outperform in that department (none of the steps requires any tightening, mostly just over-engineered latches). Second, the entire video appears to have been made with the Motocompacto in Drive Mode 1, which requires a kick-off (12:54) and has a top speed of 10mph. Drive Mode 2, which just requires you to double-press the power button, can accelerate from stopped and reach a top speed of 15mph. In that mode, I've easily ridden up >30 degree inclines (I'm ~180lbs) with minimal speed loss. The Motocompacto has a fairly powerful 490W motor - the 15mph top speed is almost certainly a software cap. You can actually feel the Motocompacto reduce power when you hit 15, which suggests that it can easily have kept going faster (some folks using aftermarket controllers have achieved 25-30mph). To be fair, many of Seth's comments about it being overpriced ($995 MSRP, fwiw I bought it w/ a discount), underpowered compared to a $300 e-scooter, and lacking any suspension making it a rough ride are all true. He does also showcase the durability, handling, and balance of the scooter by doing some gnarly tricks (unlikely that a $300 e-scooter would survive any of these, especially since they tend to have smaller wheels, lower clearance, and have their battery packs literally at the bottom so a good hit on a rock might lead to an explosion). I would just have really loved to see the Motocompacto be tested properly and given its dues. Me and other owners I've met of the Motocompacto have all really loved it, and I haven't met anyone who has regretted purchasing one. Anyways, I'm grateful Seth took the time to make this video and look forward to others like this.

They also never mention that the motocompacto was literally designed as a "last-mile" companion for their cars, not to be some "daily driver" commuter scooter. It folds up nicely so you can keep it in the trunk of a car. It wasn't designed for the same purpose as the Brompton.
@polltable5 ай бұрын
I think that part of the appeal of the motocompacto is also the retro factor, blinkning back to their legendary 80's icon the Motocompo. It falls under partially the same nieche as the Nintendo NES mini. You dont buy it mainly to compete with modern full sized consoles or because "its a good deal", but for the retro factor and the looks.

I think the best use case for the honda would be something like a large factory floor or container yard. Those are mostly flat and often have bikes for the workers and foremen, to get around faster and minimize strain from walking back and forth all day. With its thin profile and decent but limited speed, it would be very convenient and safe for that sort of application. But yeah, for personal use I can't really see the appeal. Turns out that if you design tests where one type of vehicle will perform better than a completely different type of vehicle, the second type of vehicle will look bad in comparison. Next maybe you can test how the Brompton performs on the highway compared to a car.

I would guess the suitcase gimmick wouldn't do much on the highway either. Bikes, including a Brompton perform perfectly well on highways, where permitted. How about you try to carry your F150 up a flight of stairs.

Damn bro, I just bought a bike. I can't afford to get obsessed with Bromptons now.

Lectric One vs Brompton would be cool too. I've been thinking about getting the One, but I wanna know how it handles curbs, potholes, gravel, etc

You should do a video comparing a high-end mountain bike to a motocross bike. Whenever someone sees an $8k+ MTB the comment is always “you can buy a motorcycle for that much!” Obviously performance will be different but could also be about serviceability, trail access, safety, etc.

you HAVE to check out the Brompton G-Line !!

I can't help but see the film "Dumb & Dumber" in my head when he rides that little guy.

Give us an update on the main hinge for the Brompton after you get done tossing it off drops. Those are steel but I bet they get out of alignment eventually.

What's the use case for a lower powered, heavier, lower torque, less portable scooter..... A person without legs?

This was fun. It reminded me of old Top Gear at the beginning lol.

I’ve wanted a Motocompacto for the last 20 years that I’ve know about them. I can’t believe they’re back. It’s definitely not what I thought it’d be and wouldn’t be the electric bike I’d go with in the future. I’m still waiting for a small electric bike that won’t cost me the price of a used car.

It's hard to think of a Honda product that hasn't been exquisitely engineered, utterly reliable, and hasn't become the gold standard of competing products... but looks like this is it!

They absolutely had the scooter in the lowest power mode for these tests. It should have a power output of almost 500 watts, which should be enough to easily pace the Brompton up to it's limited max speed of 15mph, even uphill. They need to get it in the correct power mode and re-do this video.

@@TheLairyLemur It's real easy to outpace 15mph on a bike, my ebike limits out at 20 and I get passed by old guys in spandex on bike trails all day.
