Scott, I have an electrical issue. I have two switches in my kitchen. Both control the singular fan and the ceiling lights (2 tube lights). When I open the switch box, I see two black wires on one side and one red wire on the other. Two white wires are connects with a twist nut. Both switches are routed like this, however, I wanted to control the lights and fan separately. Can you please give me some guidance?

Keep the details. One thing tho', sometimes you use fast forward, and fast talking, during the actual fastening and connecting, which makes it hard to follow. I know you're trying to make the vid shorter, and ffwd is good, but some things need to be at normal speed to see what you're doing. So be aware of that when you're editing the video.

Last year when we moved into our new home I did 7 ceiling fans. Two of them replaced lights but I was able to use new work boxes from the attic. The most astonishing part was the variety of boxes and screws that the builder used on the original 5 fans. Everyone was a new type of jank.

The Hunter fans are great, I've had problem-free operation of them for many years in my rental property. You definitely want to spend at least $100 on a ceiling fan. The low-cost lightweight ones easily get out of balance, often hum as they operate, and are just junky. You really get what you pay for!

You hit all but one salient point. Fan sizing for a room. Most manufacturers and some local codes recommend a minimum distance of 30" from tip of fan blade to the nearest wall. Details are awesome. Great vid 👍

You used the correct mounting bracket. However, the ROUND shaft and turning with your hand makes it difficult for the metal spikes to dig into the ceiling joists for maximum holding power. I have seen similar bracket with the shaft shaped like a hex (not round) in order for a wrench to securely fit onto the hex shaft and properly outstretch the metal spikes. Great video.

Totally agree. I winced when he said he had to hand tighten it. No possible way that will be as secure as something tightened with a tool.
@Russianmafia10
@Russianmafia10 Жыл бұрын
You need to be careful though. I had one with a hex and I easily over tightened it and the joists moved enough to pop a few drywall screws. You should really only do it by hand

I haven't finished the video yet because the info I was looking for was already addressed. We bought fans to replace light fixtures and ran into the exact same situation you demonstrated. the brace in the ceiling was the non-fan rated kind with the plastic box. We purchased the right braces with the fans, but couldn't figure out how to get the old braces out. We thought we were going to have to hire someone to go into the attic to take out the old brace and do the new installation. Now I am confident we can do this ourselves. So, in answer to your question, it's a big thumb's up! Yes to the full instructions INCLUDING the education on proper support and removal of the old equipment. Exactly what I was searching for. Thank you!

@9:12 The amount of detail was just right. I knew about fan-rated boxes, but the only version I knew of was the type you installed. The additional information about other types of fan-rated boxes will be of use when I'm at Big Box Store, staring at a seeming mountain of stuff. And a good warning about integrated LED lights, something that a lot of folks miss when buying the light or fan.

I enjoy the deeper explanations. I am already pretty confident in my know-HOW for most DIY projects, having grown up in a family of carpenters, general contractors, and handy-men, but I also like to know WHY. Many times when I was learning these things growing up on and around job sites, I was shown how to do them but never told why.

Honestly, just stumbled upon this channel. I was searching how to best hang a heavy framed picture and started looking through your videos and found this one. Noting it because I was about to have a local electrician company install light fixtures and replace one with a fan/light combo. They did NOT have me order a box with brace for the new fan/light combo (among all the material they told me to order) which is alarming me right now and having me second guess using them.

Yeah, definitely get the brace 👍. If the existing box is located next to a rafter they come use one of the other boxes and attach directly to the wood but does depend of the setup.

Thank you so much for making this detailed video! My new house's living room, whichencompasses dining room and kitchen, is quite large and has no fans, making it very difficult and expensive to cool off in the 100+ degree summer weather. There is a small light fixture in the living room that im sure converting into a fan will help cool the room down. Im big on Diy but have never changed out a light for a fan combo and knew there was no way it would be as simple as popping the fixure off and the fan on. You made me feel confifent and knowledgeable in doing this job so heres to hoping i will be much cooler in the next couple days!

I agree with many of the comments. Excellent presentation, and explanation on this. Those Southwire smart boxes are game changers for anyone wanting to do electrical work without having to repair drywall. I used a 3-gang smartbox in my hallway to merge a 2-gang, and single gang into one box. They're incredibly easy to install, and very versatile because they bridge that gap between new work, and old work. I'm planning to do a very similar project in one of my pantries, but it's a loose old work box that just isn't agreeing with the drywall it's attached to. Thankfully I have attic access so for me, I can install a metal new work box, and be done with it. Normally I'd use a plastic Carlon, but it's a pull chain light fixture, and that's why I had to replace the box in the first place. The previous house owners must have been yanking on that chain like it owed them money because the screw posts had broken completely off from the box. The only thing holding that fixture up was the Romex. Suffice it to say I fixed it with an old work box, but for that application it just isn't working. Thank you for explaining things in detail, and THANK YOU for the Wago 221 link. I never know which ones to buy so I haven't bought them yet.
