There's a new kid on the block and they're called VINFAST. The Vietnamese automaker has sprung to the top in Vietnam in just 4 short years and I got the chance to find out all about them as well as their parent company Vingroup and get a test drive of the VF8 Mid Sized electric SUV. The VF9 will be following shortly as well as the smaller VF6 and VF7.

When he was talking about how much Vingroup has their hands in, it gave me chills. Absolutely terrifying. Grow up in a Vinschool, take your Vincar or Vinscooter to your Vinjob in one of the many job sectors they're involved in, buy a Vinhome. Do your shopping at a Vinstore. Sick? Vinhospital. Time for vacation? More like Vincation at one of their many resorts. If that doesn't scare you shitless, I don't know what will.

Outstanding video with truly incredible photography. Thank you for the first real in depth introduction to Vinfast and everything they do. I have been on their list since first hearing they were coming to the US, I've been excited to see their progress and have been looking for a review like yours. Việt Nam is different from Vinfast. Vinfast EVs were not designed by Vietnamese, they were assembled with Chinese parts. In the official brochure, it’s said “assembled in Việt Nam”, not manufactured, not produced in Việt Nam.

Should be called VinFail. $60k is way overpriced for a mediocre EV. Other EV SUV are $10-20k cheaper.

It can be done, if the culture of the country is a good fit. We get excellent machine tools from Taiwan, and excellent cars from Japan and South Korea. Now we need to move our battery suppliers away from China, along with our solar panel and pharmaceutical suppliers.

Outstanding review of the car and company and my opinion is simple, WOW! Fast moving company that showing the world what moving fast is all about. I wish them great success. Vehicles are not much on styling but bang for the buck is very high. I like the idea of leasing the battery and I can see it would fit my low mileage driving perfectly. No driver screen is offset with a good hud system and it appears they have a good take on the entertainment side. I have a Tesla Long Range and a switch for more comfort is quite likely. As far as EVs from Asia are concerned, I think the Japanese are not even in the game, the Koreans are all flash and show and give me an uneasy feeling, the Chinese don't seem to move very fast at all, so it looks like this Vietnamese company is going to be one of the the biggest players. It's really interesting to see what countries are moving fast to get into this EV marketplace. It's all very enlightening!

From models, technology, financing (forget the so called Vietnamese billionaire), corporate employees, management, it's not going (trying) to use full IPO rules for the US FEC to go public but a SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) which will never fly bc of their questionable finance practices, they bought Holden (Australian GM) and took all it's engineers and shut down the main facility or sold, I don't remember. Oh yeah, they moved the headquarters to Singapore to be able to go public in Europe, USA, Singapore and Malaysia etc etc. So yes, It looks like a GM scam.

Brian, I'm Vietnamese and I'm more jealous of your trip to Vietnam than the Vinfast car. It's going to be hard to convince the North American consumers to buy a car with no prior history. It took Hyundai over 20 years to be successful in North America and probably be the same for Vinfast. Hopefully, one day Vietnam will be known for their cars as much as their Pho.

All true however when Hyundai started they didn’t have so many designers/engineers, software developers from so many already established car companies and also the fact that you can’t even get an EV if you even tried - people will buy anything EV they can get their hands on right now. They have a very captive market.

Styling for an SUV is not bad at all. I see a little Honda ( more Acura ) and Renault at the front and a bit of Cupra ( Seat's performance brand ) at the back. Vietnam looks very nice and the company itself seems to have many potential revenue streams

The battery subscription model sucks. Honestly, I'd buy the pack. Also, VINFAST is building a $4 billion EV assembly plant in Chatham County North Carolina that will employ 7-8000 American employees. Soooo I'll wait.

It has the last generation BMW X5 chassis (F15), that's why there is a hump in the rear row. Their discontinued ICE vehicle Lux SA 2.0 used this chassis and with the N20 1997cc engine, both from BMW. That's why they reuse the chassis and you all know that BMW handles well.

Let me correct you about the BMW things. Except for the Lux A and SA were BMW-designed chassis. All VinFast EVs are entirely new designs and do not have anything related to BMW as you mentioned. The reason for the hump to exist was because there was a conventional ICE version for each of them. The original plan was that each of the new vehicles would have both EV and ICE versions. With the new strategy, ICE versions were canceled altogether.

@@MinhNguyen87556 The hump is one of the lightest, cheapest ways to offer chassis rigidity and good crash ratings if they've done it right. I couldn't quite see the hump very well but most humps in the last 20 years haven't been too high or wide. Not at all like full sized RWD NA sedans of the 70s. Female centre seaters looked like they were ready for child birth any second in those old beasts. There's a lot to like in the Eco version. I wish the miserably hot, cold, unsafe, expensive, leak/breakage prone pano or sunroof was a stand-alone option. So it could stand-alone anywhere but in my driveway. And the money saved would cover 2-3 years of the battery lease! I also wish it had a CD player option, with highend audio. Hopefully the headlights are good. That is one thing they may reserve for the higher priced version though. Having that manual rear hatch and having to open the rear doors to access the rear seat folding latches wouldn't bother me one bit. I wonder if they have extra layered windshield and sidedoor glass to keep noise levels down? I think this thing has incredible potential in Canada. I'd like to find a dealer and test drive it tomorrow. Probably buy it on Monday. Probably would opt for the Eco. Nothing wrong with 5.9 sec 0-60 times..

Nice video, thanks for these details! I think the battery lease idea is interesting and I would consider it, however I feel the price they are asking for car's in Canada without a battery are very high to start with. Then you add the unknown elements of a new company with little experience or presents in Canada with such things as initial quality, lifetime durability, service experience, limited sales and service locations, Inclement weather knowledge, possible global supply chain parts delay from Vietnam, etc and the price is way more than I would pay for this package at this time.

The price of a Vinfast EV is far lower than any EV of the same level luxury and options. Vinfast has far more experience in building cars and VF has far more reserve capital and marketing and service expertise than Tesla when Tesla was at the same introductory stage as Vinfast now. Give VF a chance...such a gorgeous-design by expert Italian studio and VF is staffed by the most experienced engineers and staff from all over the world. Having a battery subscription option can be quite appealing and competitive, if this is well promoted and explained to the customers. First, leasing the battery would allow major saving in the purchasing price of the car. For example, the Vinfast VF8 starts at $40,000 whereas the comparable Tesla Model Y starts at $68,000. Obtaining financing for $40,000 is a heck of a lot easier with $40,000 than with $68,000. Second, battery tech is increasing by leap and bound, and with battery leasing, you won't be stuck with old battery tech when new techs are coming out. Third, when battery warranty will run out, good luck if there is a few bad cells causing major problem with your pack, because the dealer will offer you a new pack for tens of thousands of $ to make a lot of profit, instead of bothering to help you save money by diagnosing and replacing the bad components of your pack. And, since your EV is old and have low residual value, no one will spend $20,000 just to replace the old battery pack...meaning that your old and lovely EV is toast when its battery is out of warranty and malfunction. With battery subscription, the factory will take back the old pack, do diagnostic to replace the bad components, and your old EV will keep its resale value, because the battery pack can be easily replaced or repaired by the factory for free with continual subscription fee...and this will result in great saving for all parties involved, and is better for the environment and for your old and lovely EV by avoiding its untimely demise.

I’m interested in vf9 but I’m confused about fixed vs flexible plan for battery. Are you allowed to switch back and forth between plans?

From what I read in a group, yes you are allowed to switch monthly if needed. So I get the fixed plan then if u won’t use the car that often next month you can switch. To be confirmed tho … Vinfast doesn’t communicate that much unfortunately

I have been following VinFast. First, I really like the looks of their cars, technology and so on... and second, I like their brand name "VINFAST". It is a Cool name. I have read a lot of comments on each video that I have watched. Just like myself, I do not like leasing battery. I am still waiting what is the price that come with the battery. A lot of Americans do not like leasing the battery; therefore, I hope VinFast will come up with the price for their SUVs with battery soon. :)

Your comment about battery leasing is stupid ( just show how stupid you are) pick your poison, pay higher up front and no battery payment or pay lower up front and rent battery. Sure there are cheaper EV out there but do they offer everything that vinfast offer. Now I am not saying vinfast is the best car but I am fair and will let them speak for themselves so until they deliver car here in the US. Time will tell. Remember for every dissatisfied customer, there are thousands satisfied customers. I bet you are one of the south vietnamese whose lost the war in 1975. After more than 40 years, still bitter. amazing review, amazing details on this beautifull country and people! They could create VinCountry haha. About their existence and years of experience, FOrd are in the automoblie industry and are not great cars, tesla with less years and lot of quality build issues has done great things, so seeing Vingroup creating in such a short time a plant at the top of modern tech, they proved already they can beat the competitions. Im really excited about it, classy and beautifull cars too, about battery leasing, people complain but for a long time now buyers can lease a car instead of buying and nobody complain that your car is not your untill you decide to buy it, a whole car lol, so why not for the battery, its the same idea of leasing the battery and everything is taking care off, plus correct me if im wrong, but you can buy the battery off after? anyway excited and impatient now haha

It’s because this platform is shared with their gas version. I’m sure when they go all EV , they’ll mow the likely redesign the platform but in the meantime, they can fit more batteries in there.

there was a conventional ICE version of the vehicle that was canceled due to the new EVs-only strategy. the VF8 (originally called VFe35 had a twin sibling called VF35p).

With battery subscription, the factory will take back the old pack, do diagnostic to replace the bad components, and your old EV will keep its resale value, because the battery pack can be easily replaced or repaired by the factory for free with continual subscription fee...and this will result in great saving for all parties involved, and is better for the environment and for your old and lovely EV by avoiding its untimely demise.

People are so ignorant they don't yet realize that even those who have bought and paid for the car outright, still can own only a brick if the manufacturer decides upon a whim to not update your software. What I am astounded by, are any auto journalists touting the "perks" (not!) of OSU. That's perfect..now the manufacturer can de-class, de-power, de-option and basically de-stroy your ride by bricking it if they want. Is it legal? Hell no! But neither is what they have already been doing as they systematically have been removing right-to-repair assumptions for years already. There's a lot more crap coming down the pipe..just wait and see, people.

Here in America, most buyers will want to BUY the battery pack, pay the extra money and be done with it. I hope VinFast soon realizes that and changes its pricing policy, or it will fail, despite being an attractive vehicle. I really want this company to succeed here.

No one: New EV: /debuts Every car reviewer: TESLA KILLER??? Look, it doesn’t seem like a bad car, but honestly it doesn’t seem that competitive either. It already looks at least 5 years outdated and it doesn’t seem to do anything that the existing EVs don’t already do, while being priced similarly to them. Vinfast seems like a good car company with talented employees, but so far their cars lack the wow factor and the identity needed to get the attention of consumers. Oddly, instead of making a game changer, Vinfast instead seemed to take a rather middle of the road approach, and I’m just not sure this will work for the U.S. That said, the battery leasing policy is genius, and very innovative. If anything, they’ll have a lot of success with giving people peace of mind with long term battery ownership. It’s just on them to keep their word.

How will they address brand equity and earned trust (warranty is over after 4 years my fantastic Toyota is running without any issues for 11 years now and will for another 10 years)? Thank you

@@chohohowuan8994 Possibly because Ford, GM, Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Range Rover, Jaguar and bunch of others have all blatantly burned you in the past, resting on their laurels in an unmitigated form of effrontery for so many years, they've lost touch with reality...and perhaps if honest, and remaining honest new competition presents itself to, in quite a lot of ways lately..a captive audience who are possibly ready to give a new (to us) company a try. A test drive with some miles in all 4 seasons of extremes in NA will tell us a lot. We already have companies here that offer 10 year warranties that isn't worth the paper it's written on. People are tired of getting burned and might be more open to Vinfast than you'd first think. It really depends heavily on a) how good is the car..has it broken? and b) how good is the company service when an issue does crop up? They have to be great in the beginning, and stay great for years. And not be greedy. That will ensure their success here.

$139 for the VF 8 or $199 per month for the VF9 CDN is a NO GO for me. Leasing the battery on top of over $50k for starting price?? For those thinking of this vehicle think long and hard here. If you rent a battery, you will get a free battery replacement when it is damaged or unfortunately during use the battery is faulty or an accident occurs that damages the battery.

The USA needs to be integrating with Vietnamese companies rather than Chinese companies. Doing business with China is literally funding the country that will then attack us (over Taiwan). So VinFast should be vetted to make sure they aren't simply a front for the Chinese. But we should move ALL of our trade to non-chinese places, like Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, even New Guinea, etc. We need to do this faster than any other priority, even faster than the move to renewable energy!

We were within their own private road on their resort which was an active road so they’d have to coordinate with other vehicles coming and going which is the reason they had someone in the right seat. It was alright, Hung was a really nice guy

The idea of battery swap and lease is not new, Nio has been doing so in China since day one of their first EV ES8. The only issue is the battery station, because they will have to build a lot of battery stations to make people feel at ease to accept a that. I am not sure Vin Group wish to risk that chance in Canada because it will require huge amount of initial capital investment. Last but not least, feedback on this from Nio in China is that you may get a battery not new so not performed as well as it could have been. It’s like a Russian roulette, every time you swap a battery, you take your chance, maybe a brand new one, maybe a used one like 12 months old.

Let's get real, an unknown auto company (at least in North America) from a country not known for Manufacturing Expertise (i.e. Vietnam is not on par with Germany or Japan) launching a product in the new technology segment of an established market (EV among gasoline and hybrid cars) needs all the moons line up for them to succeed. Add a complex payment plan on top and your chances just diminished. Companies spend 100s of millions of dollars developing new products and launching them in the new global markets, but so little understanding local market dynamics and required strategy. While I welcome the competition and innovation, history is not on their side, recall Peugeot launching in North America in the early 1990s for lessons learned.

Tesla literally started from scratch. Hyundai and KIA used to be known for cheap junk cars, Lexus came from nothing, Rivian and Lucid from nothing etc etc. This company seems to be well funded and well versed in business with a pretty good looking product right out the gate. Honestly if there's any company out there other car companies should be concerned about it is probably this one, they seem to do everything and do it very well too.

The thing with these new companies nowadays is that they are acquiring all their talent from Germany, Italy, USA so they’re really not that inexperienced. The subscription plan might be their Achilles heel however if they can actually build enough cars, people will buy them with the given shortage of EV models for sale. They are very well funded and have a lot of experience in large scale projects. It should be very interesting.

Vinfast has far more experience in building cars and VF has far more reserve capital and marketing and service expertise than Tesla when Tesla was at the same introductory stage as Vinfast now. Give VF a chance...such a gorgeous-design by expert Italian studio and VF is staffed by the most experienced engineers and staff from all over the world. Having a battery subscription option can be quite appealing and competitive, if this is well promoted and explained to the customers. First, leasing the battery would allow major saving in the purchasing price of the car. For example, the Vinfast VF8 starts at $40,000 whereas the comparable Tesla Model Y starts at $68,000. Obtaining financing for $40,000 is a heck of a lot easier with $40,000 than with $68,000. Second, battery tech is increasing by leap and bound, and with battery leasing, you won't be stuck with old battery tech when new techs are coming out. Third, when battery warranty will run out, good luck if there is a few bad cells causing major problem with your pack, because the dealer will offer you a new pack for tens of thousands of $ to make a lot of profit, instead of bothering to help you save money by diagnosing and replacing the bad components of your pack. And, since your EV is old and have low residual value, no one will spend $20,000 just to replace the old battery pack...meaning that your old and lovely EV is toast when its battery is out of warranty and malfunction. The multiple lines on the front of the VF8 is going to age poorly. It looks very busy. And the rest of the vehicle is generic at best. While Kia and Hyundai bring us sharp interesting designs why would I buy this? Sorry Vinfast. As for Vietnam, I loved my travels there. I would say to everybody, go visit if you get the chance.

Brian Hope you have enjoyed trip to Vietnam. (Pho, Bun cha and Massage.) VIN group started VINFAST Internal Combustion Car manufacturing with BMW's help. They make nothing by themselves. All of EV parts are from overseas. Do you know why you have Indian guy sitting next to you because any smart person in Vietnam knows this EV venture is bound to fail. They don't want to look for a new job when it fails. VIN tried cell phone - getting out of it. Do you know why? no one in right mind would quit Samsung factory (24% of Vietnam's GDP) in Vietnam to work for company that will fail and it did. Chairman is purported to have deep ties to the high-ranking government officials. So, funds to do any projects never dried up. Poor Vietnamese. Who do you think owns the VIN group??? It is a communist country if you didn't see that at the airport. VIN Group is good at one thing - that is dealing real estate. Because in a Communist country, a government official can do whatever they want, they don't need to ask anyone.
