I never understand why people go, "Well Tony Stark and Dr. Strange were overconfident and no one complained then." in order to defend Carol and Jen. Tony and Strange were being chastised for their arrogance. It's was part of their character development in their first films. Captain Marvel and She-Hulk aren't being reprimanded for their cockiness, in fact, their being praised for it, both in and out of universe.

It's like they never saw those movies. Pepper Potts and Rhodey would call Tony out, Dr. Strange was humbled in his movie too. There's no characters humbling the overconfident female characters and the actresses can't pull off the "arrogant but charming and funny" persona very well, so here we are. Hope Cat I’d say the actress of she hulk can, she definitely pulled something close (I say “close” because the character… characterS weren’t Tony’s kind of cocky but charming, but one was cocky and sympathetic and another cocky and charming, just not the same kind of charming as tony) in Orphan Black, and it worked pretty well there. So yeah really seem it’s an issue of direction and script more than acting ability per se, though I wouldn’t say it makes the actress blameless, not until and unless it’s revealed she desperately tried to call out her character’s horribleness but wasn’t listened to, which I doubt will ever happen.

Plus it's also the blatant hypocrisy of the "because I do it infinitely more than you" line coming right after she almost killed three guys for calling her pretty. If She-Hulk was to be a character of the quality of Tony Stark, it would be her emotional instability and immaturity that would cause her to crash her car after a work mishap. Bruce shouldn't have even been in the car, I much prefer the blood transfusion origin, that way if she wasn't turned into a Hulk then she would've died, at least the option of her just not being a Hulk wouldn't be there and would make for a more compelling character. And after that she would've realized that those are aspects of her personality she needs to work on and now she has a Hulk as a time-bomb so the stakes of her personal conflict have been externalized. But instead she's perfect and Bruce is the idiot for bleeding on her and then worrying about her being a Hulk. It's not like he tried to kill himself yk.

@@unconcernedbeast9190 I don't agree with you, when it comes to good treatment, it honestly just depends on who the person giving the treatment wants to give it to and when, I personally like being good to anyone I feel is a nice person and anyone who has been good to me because I don't see a reason not to be good to them. Men actually owe a lot to women, doing something about workplace sexual harassment, giving them more representation at every level of government, doing something about domestic violence, and not blaming the victim in every sexual assault case out of instinct are all great places to start. I'm not saying that only men should be doing those things but we definitely have a part to play in all of those things which we're clearly not playing, and yeah the feminist movement isn't helping that honestly. As for men will be men, I've never not heard that phrase be used as an excuse for harmful behaviour by a man, if we're talking about things like workplace sexual harassment or intimate partner violence then yeah men need to change, there are no two ways about it. If you're aggressive in every relationship and every interaction and if every relationship and every interaction is about power and dominance to you rather than understanding and cooperation then you're definitely toxic. Aggression still has a place in society and we need to figure out where that is but it still is best to avoid it in relationships and interactions to keep things whatever the opposite of frustrating is. Because if I'm your friend and every time I talk to you you act aggressively to maintain power and assert dominance in the relationship then I can't stop being your friend any faster.

Jen has a living family who loves her, no history of childhood trauma, a successful career, a good education, a friend who is still alive, and a beautiful home. What did Bruce have? An abusive childhood, his life ripped away from him turning into a monster, had to live on the run from the police and government, his friends splitting up in Civil War and then dying in the later movies. Her selfishness being humbled could have been a decent story arc in the hands of good writers.

Do not forget that he even tried to harm himself, with a firearm, but the Hulk spit out the bullet. Imagine that trauma, believing that you are a monster so much as to try to end it all - yet the monster stops you. That is serious damage, and it could have been a very moving grounds to make Hulk related media which explores Bruce’s tragic character, because Bruce is a such a wonderfully reserved and peaceful man in contrast to his angered and more animalistic alter ego. The very fact that the writers believe that Jen has suffered more, is ludicrous. They did enough to ruin Hulk, and this was the nail in the coffin as they say. This is akin to taking my paper cut and comparing it to the suffering of a leukemia patient.

If I was forced to make this show make sense while keeping the shit material, I'd have that be exactly _why_ she is a better Hulk than him. These retards don't even realise the gold mine they have themselves. Jen, unlike Bruce, had all the chances to grow a normal and healthy relationship with anger and frustration. They could have had the training arc with Bruce end with her very openly and as nicely as possible telling him "I know you are afraid of what I'll do, I'm sorry your life was so much worse than mine but Bruce, I lived easy enough to have the spare time to learn how to process and control my feelings." They could have made the childhood abuse and the paranoia _why_ Bruce couldn't control the Hulk. The parallel to real life is perfect and is RIGHT THERE, most people who are abusive towards others are people with broken lives, follow any serial killer history and 99% of the time you'll see parents abusing them physically or sexually or both. Jen could have been better at controlling the Hulk simply because she lived a cushioned life and there isn't as much of a loss of control for her when she gets angry, it would even fit with how Bruce, after spending 5 years doing therapy and meditating, managed to control the Hulk, it would be an amazing message of "even if you went through horrible shit in your life, if you work on yourself you _can_ become better." But no, she has had a harder life because some dudes said they want to fuck her on the street... Totally comparable with having your father torture you with knives as a child right

Fringy actually made my exact argument about likeability at 1:13:39 when comparing characters like Tony Stark/Stephen Strange and She-Hulk. TS and SS are PORTRAYED as unlikeable when they're being assholes. The script itself makes it clear that you, the audience, aren't supposed to approve of TS being a responsibility-denying warmonger, you're not supposed to approve of SS being an asshole to Christine. And because of that, it's so much more powerful when their eyes are opened later and they realize what selfish assholes they were being. She-hulk's unlikability, however, seems to be lauded by the script. The script wants you to cheer when she puts down Bruce Banner and laugh when she makes fun of Captain America. You're supposed to think she's so awesome and cool for being better than everyone at everything, and I think that's the key distinction.

This video is simply a great example of why it is, in fact, bad to make shows who's only point is to give something for people to project their own baggage in to. This woman wasn't actually defending She-Hulk, she was using as it an excuse to vent her own trauma. Which is why she kept having to dismiss and ignore a key element of She-hulk's rant because it completely undermined what she really wanted to say I'm not gonna say anything personal about the person who made the video, i'm sure all that was important to her.... but it's also a great example for why the entire theory She-hulk is built around is just really shit entertainment. What was an escape from Lisa's upper-crust life path became more of the same; her debonair lover-boy turned out to be the exact kind of well-to-do business-man her mother always pressured her to marry someday. And she resents it. She resents him. So she moves on to his best friend. Dashing, untethered, and insecure with himself. She tears their friendship apart, spreads lies about Johnny's behavior to discredit him before his friends', partners', and her mother's eyes, and watches with quiet satisfaction as he desperately begs her to just tell him what her problem is. Eventually, Johnny snaps. And Lisa is left to witness how everyone mourns the man she discarded like a toy. It's portrayed like ass, but all the pieces are there.

I gotta say I really appreciate the EFAP tradition of covering a video, having the creator come on the stream to discuss it, and then they all become friends afterwords. Shout out to Nutsa and I wasn't a fan yet but I'm pretty sure Jay was the same thing. It's great to see that there are people who can have entirely different views on something, and when they get critiqued on it they take that to heart instead as an attack on their entire existence. That's some horrible marketing when Marvel said the show wasn't for men and "Must She Series" and then troll viewers during the series. It's always been demographic based with shows to determine channel, time slot, & even commercials to play during the show. It's just good business sense to understand your market and win them over. Not to suddenly try to push viewers away and insult them regularly in each show. They could have made it a series to pull in more female viewers while potentially making male viewers happy to watch as well. That reminds me of that scene in Spider-Man 2 (the regular one, not the amazing one), where Peter goes in the burning house and only manages to save one person because he gave up his powers, and then realises how important Spider-Man is. This teenager has to just accept the fact that he has spider powers, *and* has to keep the secret from those in his life, to the point where his life is seriously negatively affected, and he still ultimately decides to use his power because he recognises his responsibility to protect citizens. This 30-something woman just whines about getting Hulk powers, and at the end of the day, gets her way with minimal effort. Is it reasonable to want to hold on to your old life? Yes. But heroes are heroes because they commit to the cause. I don't want to watch a woman with powers navigate law, live a perfectly comfortable life and still complain, I want to see a woman with powers embrace what she's become and take on the responsibility. As a girl, Jen doesn't inspire me one bit. The only thing she teaches me is how not to act if I'd like to have friends.

In the comics, She-Hulk's powers were based on confidence instead of rage. This is why instead of "hulking out", she was just always green, and completely conscious, until she lost confidence and became normal. It's why her Hulk form was the way that it was (tall, well-built and attractive), it was an expression of her id, much like Bruce's Hulk form is uncontrollable and rage-fuelled because it's an expression of his repressed anger at his abusive dad. She was very grateful to Bruce for the transfusion and giving her the Hulk form she got, because it let her have the confidence and looks she always wanted, while also being supportive when he was struggling with his own Hulk.

It’s kind of symptomatic to the fact that marvel has been actively hurting its own story telling and character beats to shoehorn in jokes since at least endgame. i legit think the reasoning behind this show is that the MCU has peaked, so now they have to get away from the comic book demographic The movies, despite what Disney may want you to believe, are more expensive than ever and seeing rapidly diminishing returns. The shows are extremely expensive and Disney+ is a money pit overall for Disney. There is not that same rabid desire for this stuff you had circa endgame. This means, according to hollywood executive logic, it's time to chase other demographics, people who general don't like superhero movies.... say middle-aged women who tend to like sitcoms and legal dramas instead of action shows... let's branch out, expand the brand... yeah, to a normal person that's mind-numbingly stupid and obviously doomed to failure.... but Kevin Feige's career is basically over if the MCU dies so i legit think this is the 'logic' behind She-hulk

The format of MCU D+ is "Character hates X. Character stalls. Character does X." Looking at you Last Jedi and Luke not budging until yodas like "get over it" and then Luke dies. What is this trend.

Or you see a horrible car accident, hulk out, rip the jammed car door off the frame to save someone and toss it away, then you hear screaming and look back and see someone was cut in half by the car door you threw too hard. Or you are in a meeting with your boss who has less experience than you and only got his position through nepotism, he tells you he is going to do closing arguements after you’ve done all the work on the case, he sarcastically thanks you and puts his hand out for a hand shake. Pissed off you still go for the hand shake and hear bones popping and your boss screaming as you break every bone in his hand by accident. You get drunk and want to show off your hulk strength for your friends, throw a concrete slab and it lands on someone killing them, or hits a building causing it to collapse killing the occupants, or flies through someone’s window and kills them. All crimes.

I'm late, but I have to agree with Fringy's point at around 3:14:00 in the form of a rant: I'm so tired of writers not even trying to communicate things to the audience through characters and themes, and then expecting the audience to have compassion for their characters just because it "reflects the world we live in today" (thanks for that line, Drinker). It is your *job* as a writer to give me, an audience member, a reason to care. If you want to talk to me about women's struggles, go right ahead, but leave out your garbage middle-man of a show. I can care about women's struggles without caring about Jen, and I can dislike Jen without invalidating the female experience. People (men included) want characters they can relate to, who express themselves in ways that feel natural, and also tie into well-established and well-executed themes. A rant is just a rant, it's not stunning and brave just because you made She-Hulk say it. Men aren't trying to dismiss what women care about, they just want a good character. And just because for you, personally, it's a whole meta thing, doesn't mean it's that way for everyone - you look at Jen and see a representation of the fight against the "patriarchy", no one can force you not to have that interpretation, but that interpretation isn't an argument. And I've noticed that these people who can't provide evidence that what they like is well-written always turn it into a meta/political conversation, instead of a conversation about character-writing and storytelling. You don't relate to Jen because she's Jen, you relate to her because she's a female character being used as a mouthpiece to preach vague ideas about sexism. If that's good enough for you, fine, but it isn't for most people. Most people look at a show called She-Hulk and expect She-Hulk, the superhero, not Jen, the spokesperson women have been asking for (and also, I'm a woman, and I didn't ask for this...)

Okay, fuck it, I'm gonna be the asshole here by saying this, but I gotta be truthful. When she started listing off a bunch of experiences she allegedly has had to justify her flailing quadroplegic zombie of an arguement, one thought kept coming to mind: I don't believe you. I don't believe any of that absurd extreme man-crime bullshit ever actually happened to her or her friends. I don't believe she got death threats for her takes. Ever. I refuse to validate what seems so blatantly made up for the sake of comfort. I ain't a shrink, and I'm certainly not being paid to entertain delusions. Over the last decade of being on the Internet, I've seen countless people, especially women, make shit up and post it online for clout, power, sympathy, pity, or that sweet serotonin. From crying wolf of "death threats" without any evidence or alarm to accusing a co-worker or former lover of heinous sexual crimes knowing that the kneejerk response of damn near everyone will be to unquestioningly believe everything said and take swift, rash, and very public action in a fit of righteous indignation. After witnessing that same pattern repeat itself constantly, I can't and won't believe somebody's allegedly super awful totally traumatic experience happened just because they said so on the Internet of all places. People, anonymous or not, lie on the Internet too. They tell tall tales, they spin a narrative, they create a different, more interesting version of themselves and their lives for various reasons ranging from trivial to major and everything in between. And, perhaps even moreso than IRL, people generally take their word for it without further question, especially if it's a sensitive subject or a societal no-no to question it. And it's easier to get away with, given that most people don't have the time, energy, desire, knowledge, or resources to dig into an Internet stranger's personal life. Of course, some do, but most don't, especially for something or someone who has little impact beyond their own little community bubbles. So no, I don't believe a word she says or view any of it as valid. Not to mention, that whole tirade of her's was completely irrelevant to She-Hulk, and was clearly a desperate bid at saving her already long dead argument by trying to guilt me into conceding or relenting or denouncing the bad things that totally happened or else I'd be a bad person who loves all the bad things that allegedly happen to women everywhere, all the time, 24/7. This perception isn't helped by her bitchy, passive agressive, dismissive, uptight, neurotic, and plain nasty tone and deameanor, not to mention her uber zoomed in camera showing me every unpleasant expression on her face and her insistence on saying "literally" constantly. She was right about one thing though: I don't want to listen to women expressing themselves or their issues. Women who are capable of introspection and are willing to admit faults of their own without letting them define who they are or redirecting the blame entirely onto the opposite gender. Women who actually live their lives with joy and purpose instead of wallowing in the supposed baseline of fear and anger they are said to posses. Those women, yeah, I'd listen to, still not on a TV show or movie, but in a conversation? Absolutely, because they likely wouldn't treat and view me as simulteanously below them and at the same time a ticking time bomb of rape and murder. Fuck you, She-Hulk. Fuck you, Jessica Gao. I've always loved fantasy/sci-fi, and I feel it has always been looked down upon a bit as silly nonsense. But now that a few big hits have made it more mainstream, enough so to get attention from the film and tv industry, many stories get brought to to our screens..... and they all get tainted by the blunt activism and unsubtle politics of our time. When I should be spoiled for choice in my favorite genre, I instead watch one after the other get ruined by bad writing, corporate checkboxes and overt messaging, ensuring that almost none become popular, or are even recognisable from their source material. Life happens outside. Lower-class urban black and latina woman understand this dynamic and aren't offended by men approaching them on the street. But middle class white women are freaked out by a lower class minority male saying "Hello!" to them. And rather than admit that maybe they're a little bit racist/classist, they twist it around to men behaving badly -- and then, as a cherry on top, they know they will sound racist and classist if they complain about who actually does this, and pretend that middle-class white suburban men engage in this kind of behavior. The comment about male emotion reminded me of a lot of shit through my life. I don't think it's as bad as where I grew up because I did have an outlet for my emotions but that might be because of our culture, religious community or whatever. In America it really feels like you gotta have some balls of steel attitude about everything not affecting you and tolerating it. Even some women who are like "oh men should express themselves more" would shut them down if it ever appears as an inconvenience or would later use expressed problems and insecurities against them despite claiming to be a safe space for them. And then there was this picture of some art with one tough looking dude and little notes next to him describe how tough he is,always serious, doesn't let anything bother him etc. and the other character being some nice lady who is just overall a good person. The second part of the image is the guy putting his guard down, resting his head on the womens lap and looking more troubled in his facial expression while the woman smiles and comforts him. The replies to that were a lot of women going like how pathetic or get a psychiatrist or its not a womens job to make you feel better or go to your mommy. So yeah I understand why you wouldn't wanna express yourself.
