This is the third of the Expanded Universe of the EFAP lore.
In this instalment, we revisit an old debate, a classic.
Wolf and MauLer debate the merits of The Last Jedi and talk about debate itself. We learn to love and love about learning, on this epic, celestial journey.

Another couple of things to note is that literally the first line from the First Order in this scene is Captain Peavey saying, "We've caught them in the middle of their evacuation!" They know the Resistance has been prepping to leave. Also, this is directly after the destruction of Starkiller, which was (in theory, at least) a major setback for the FO's galactic domination. There is every reason to blow up the fleet first, blow up the base second, and be arrogant never. (If I was going to steelman the guy, I'd mention the tracker. But even that angle isn't developed by the film. TLJ is shit.)

I was fortunate to run across someone who recommended Mauler's 6-hour TLJ review, which was funny because when he did he warned us about the length and suggesting our attention spans weren't good enough to last through it. I proved him wrong, and now suddenly I'm addicted to seeing films getting torn apart from a critical standpoint, even if I genuinely liked it.

I think its emblematic of a larger problem. "Suicide Squad has an important message about coming together as a team... and I think that transcends any plot problems with the film. That's what you're doing to us right now." I cannot begin to tell you how much I loved that comment. It is so frustrating when people don't understand that's what they're doing. You can measure the objective quality of something independently of how you feel about it. I think the recent trend against this line of reasoning is why so few good movies get made anymore.

Hello, writer here, just to aid people who genuinely argue the "why can't you just accept it's amazing" thing: There's something called suspension of disbelief. When writing anything fantasy or otherwise fictitious, you're not just expecting people to buy into your setting, you have to sell them on it. As such, you have a set of rules that you follow. Basic example; mages use mana, if you have no mana, you can't use magic. That rule upholds with multiple series lasting years, but now a new company comes in with a new director, purchased the series, and now people can inexplicably use magic regardless of whether they have any mana or not. That kind of rulebreaking is what breaks suspension of disbelief. There's no oxygen in space. Everything we know of space leads us to believe that being *in* open space, IE sucked out of a ship, will lead to instantaneous death for so many reasons you could fill an encyclopedia. So far in Star Wars, this has held true. There've been those in space suits who've been able to last a time, and while I don't remember off the top of my head I do recall Plo Koon being able to uniquely survive for a time? Either way, for humans, it is expected that being whisked into space leads to instantaneous and irreversible death. So, imagine an old lady being sucked out of a ship, and waking up either moments or minutes after the fact, and flying in space to another air lock. It was never established prior as to how/why this is possible, it just comes out of nowhere, as though somebody opened the rule book and scribbled it in with felt marker, and expecting suspension of disbelief to not be hilariously broken. Now, lets say the producers are on our asses about this, and we NEED to make this scene happen, or the movie is done for. Fine, what we *could* do to try and salvage it is to perhaps hint to it with dialogue, or perhaps even show the force being able to protect one whilst in space. The force is an active, living entity that presides within all life, so what I personally would do is have it be like a force barrier that creates a vacuum around the caster, offering them a temporary sanctuary, but it would have to be noted as a high difficulty force power, hence it would still knock Leia out as happens in the movie already. It could even be shown in a flashback scene of Leia training that she is specializing in this kind of barrier, trying to make it as impenetrable as possible. We could even go one scene further, making it tragic by, due to her age and situational panic/worry, her barrier isn't as good as it was in her prime, and let's say the barrier initially saves a couple of other people, but they perish before they can be saved due to this. I'm just kind of going off at this point, was just listening in while taking some notes so I'm sorry if it came off as ranty. TL;DR Suspension of disbelief is the key to any fiction. Sell it, don't break it, otherwise nobody will respect your setting/story.

I love how that guy was unknowingly debating himself and lost. Despite having the god damn film playing in the background he's confused as to even linear events that happened. Here's a point I'd like to make: if Snoke could smack around Hux with the force from the other side of the galaxy, or wherever he was, why didn't he just snap Leia's neck? Why didn't he literally just hold the resistance in place so that the First Order could blow them to space dust? If they are that keen on destroying the resistance, and Snoke is that powerful, why was this not the outcome? And your answer can't be "because arrogance".

I don't know exactly what transpired between Wolf and this guy beforehand, but my observation of this debate and the main difference between MauLer and Wolf's style is that MauLer (with the exception of a few wise-cracks) tends to compose himself better and approach debates - even ones as a stone-walled as this - with more mutual respect for the opposition. Where as Wolf, as his name would imply, is just vicious and unhinged, particularly with the insults and belittling of his opponent in the debate. Not to say that Wolf's arguments were worse or that I don't agree with the fact this guy they were debating was doing a terrible job at defending his position, but I greatly prefer MauLer's approach and attempt to restrain himself from laying on the insults (although I could tell he was letting some slip through because to be honest at a certain point it would be hard not to. I guess you could chalk it up to a "moment of weakness" for him *wink*).

The issue with wolf throwing out insults in a debate is that it'll generally piss off whoever's he's insulting, and then both sides throw around insults more instead of actual arguments during that time. Wolf's style of tearing his opponent apart with both arguments and insults is definitely fun. But similar to you, I prefer Mauler's approach. Mauler's style like a mix of HK-47 and Count Dooku: his points and arguments are all pinpoint and accurate, but he will let his opponents trip over themselves and make mistakes to then strike at them, all while also having some wit behind it. I was reading an interview with Spanish writer Arturo Pérez Revere about his most famous character, Diego Alatriste. When asked about how the adopted child of the character saw him through the years (as a tired old man awaiting death or as an heroic warrior prepared to kill and die by the sword) he answer "Los héroes nunca dejan de serlo; la gente deja de verlos, que es distinto. ¿Cómo va un hombre, por envejecer, a perder su biografía?" being the translation, more or less "Heroes never stop being heroes. People stop seeing them as such, which is different. How a man is going to loose his biography because of him becoming old?" I think that tell a lot about what was done to Luke, and how this people look at what was done to the character. How they see as correct what was done.

How in the world can you say there aren't problems with Rose's introduction? Finn is a legendary hero of the Resistance, despite the movie taking place immediately after TFA. Rose tases people who want to escape with their lives, out of her own misguided moral ideology. That's two, and those were just the ones I could think of off the top of my head
@capthavic
@capthavic 3 жыл бұрын
She doomed the Rebels/Resistance by stopping Finn from sacrificing himself, its only due to Luke's intervention that they don't all die. And she forced herself on him despite no chemistry or relationship being developed between them. That's two more off top of my head.
@papershadow
@papershadow 2 жыл бұрын
Here's another one: Rose tases Finn, an outsider primarily with the Resistance by circumstance and inability to leave at this stage of the story (at least by how TLJ assesses him), him trying to escape while everyone is fleeing is wrong and she considers turning him in/putting him in the brig. Finn and Poe then devise a plan to sneak into the Supremacy and disable the tracker to make a jump to lightspeed against Holdo's orders and with Poe having been semi-publicly shamed/demoted within a few hours. Rose seems not only willing to keep this plan a secret from their leadership but to actively participate in the plan knowing it is being hidden from their current leadership for likely disapproval. Do these two reactions sound consistent in one person, back-to-back?

the lessons i take from this are when you get old you automatically gain the desire to kill being called A BOY IN A MASK will make me change my whole world view being bitch slapped to the ground will make me try to be more efficient towards my goals and also the most important one, this timeline really does have a fanatical Disney Star Wars universe
@Kevin-jb2pv
@Kevin-jb2pv 3 жыл бұрын
The effect of being called "a boy in a mask" is the #1 cause of childhood schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. Diagnoses in The West typically peak heavily around the end of October. Remember, remember to pay special attention to the United Kingdom, which experiences an additional bump in new cases through November 5th. CDC recommendations for face coverings specifically exempt very young children due to the increased risk of young girls being mistaken for little boys and effectively doubling the current pool of potential casualties. In situations where face masks are unavoidable for young children, it is advised that girls be given masks with exagerrated "little girl" patterns and color palettes. The boys, on the other hand, should not be allowed out of their crates and may need to be kept muzzled, depending on local ordinance.

The prequels, as flawed as they are, actually expanded on the lore significantly. Which, I'd argue, adds more depth to the original trilogy. The first 6 movies and the E.U gave me all I need. The sequels, to me, are an unrelated side project akin to incredibly bad fan fiction, and that's all they are.
@DeepEye1994
@DeepEye1994 2 жыл бұрын
The Prequels are like diamonds in a very raw state. You can see bits of brilliance, but they needed reworking to show off their fullest potential. People trashed them because they weren't pretty clean diamonds like the OT. The Sequels instead I'd describe them like Ned Flanders' reconstructed house after the original was destroyed by the tornado. At FIRST it looks like a nice well built house, but the more you look into it the more broken and barely functional it is, and then it collapses when you touch it too much. I have SEVERE doubts the Sequels will be vindicated in 10 years or so. They'll just get worse over the years.
