shawarma is a mispronunciation of the Turkish word cevirme, which means any type of meat that is cooked while rotating. Arabic doesn't have all the vowels that Turkish language has, so most of the foods that come from us, they have a mispronounced version in Arabic.

A döner dürüm will remind you shawarma of course because that comes from döner as well, because they basically learned it From Turks. As döner means it spins/rotates and shawarma is also a word derived from another word çevirme- which means turning as well. And dürüm just means a wrap.

The word shawarma etymologically comes from the Turkish word "çevirme"(chevirme) it means "to spin" or "spinning", döner the popular Turkish name for the kebab sandwich means "to spin", "spinning" because of the vertically spinning meat on the stick.

Well, you haven't been to Nişantaşı, Gayrettepe, Etiler, Kemerburgaz in Istanbul then. Around Taksim, prices change depending on establishment, but for someone from Nişantaşı is cheap, normal. The tourist trap is just outside of Grand Bazaar Beyazıt exit, between Beyazıt and Sultan Ahmet. That's the tourist trap; the menu has prices, but they make up any excuse to charge double. You can't even say no or disagree because the establishments and people who work in that are Mafia, and they look like Mafia, too. Even as a Turkish, I paid the double price what the menu indicates because written prices in that area don't have any meaning. Also, staff look very scary waiting any second to jump on you for a disagreement on a bill.

"Are people comfortable with that, being on film?" - It depends to the country and culture... for example in Japan, China, Korea and in some nordic european countries, people will not feel comfortable if they are being filmed. Society of Turkiye is friendly, sincerely, warmhearted, the majority of them are open to communication even if they do not know a foreign language.... you can become close friends with an average Turk citizen just in 5 minutes :) But in recent years, many refugees have come and migrated to the country, and you may mistakenly think that they are Turks and receive negative feedback. And of course there are bad Turks among them, just like in every nation. Every country and nation has it's own bad guys :)

Yes police checks are common in most crowded areas in Istanbul, and it's not uncommon at all for police to be dressed as civilians too. But definitely do ask for badges or police identification if they're asking to search you. I know people who police checked their vehicles/houses and got robbed, and turned out they weren't police at all. Besides they need a court order/warrant to step foot into your place of residence anyways. Tips to avoid getting stopped by police is blending in with the local population and not looking like the groups of people who are likely to be illegal immigrants, I imagine that's not very possible as a black person unfortunately, but it's common practice everywhere, if you do not wanna be treated as a foreigner in any country then don't look and or dress as a foreigner. The government has been cracking down and deporting illegal immigrants heavily. Safe travels!

You should see Miami of Turkey, Antalya, and visit Santa Claus's grave and church in Antalya / Demre district Many American people do not know that Santa Claus lives on Turkish soil and that he was born and died in Demre district of Antalya. It is a real event that Santa Claus used to throw gifts to people from the chimneys of houses and open windows. It is a real event that he left gifts from the chimneys of houses without showing himself so that the poor people he gave gifts to would not be ashamed. Hello, to clarify the issue, he is a plainclothes police officer. If you ask why the police stopped him, in recent years, due to the wars around Turkey, there has been an intense migration and illegal refugee influx to Turkey, especially Istanbul, in order to find better living conditions and jobs. For this reason, those who do not resemble Turks are checked by police teams in order to detect and deport those who pass illegally. I think it was like that. Have a nice day.

I'm white, female, no Turkish background. Love the country and the people; know it very well. Türkiye has exceptionally good ties with the African continent. They do things at eye level. Unlike the EU, France, Germany, etc. Theres an Africa Summit each year in Istanbul. Also a lot of African students. Never met anyone who did not love it. I am a good observer, and what I see, Turks don't "see" color. They don't like Arabs much. Still, they will be friendly. Arabs are aware Turks don't like them much, yet they love visiting Istanbul and Türkiye. I can assure you'll be safe. You can also read about James Baldwin and what Türkiye meant for him.
