@muslimresponse1035 ай бұрын
@@mickandtrudie my Albanian grandfather also loves to drink raki everyday, except during Ramadan but like him I doubt turks his and your age are watching youtube videos. whereas English people your age I’m sure are watching youtube videos because they are more tech savvy but I doubt many young turks are watching these videos to be honest but I might be wrong. either way, the younger generation of turks are more religious and will not be drinking alcohol, even English and American younger generations are not into alcohol so much like previous generations and the BBC just reported that now more Americans smoke marijuana than drink alcohol. in the UK literally dozens of pubs close every week according to local media and government statistics. still I was just trying to be friendly, didn’t mean anything by my initial comment!

Thanks for another inspiring (me to visit again) video. I was first in Istanbul aged 17 in 1972. I stayed in a basement dorm room at the Hotel Gungar almost next door to the Pudding Shop and ate my two meals a day at Lokanta’s frequented by porters from the Grand Bazaar. My daily budget was £1 - 20p for the bed, 20p for each of two meals, 20p for a beer and 20p for cigarettes. I don’t smoke or drink now, so would be even cheaper! That first visit to Istanbul gave me a life-long love of Turkish (and more generally Middles Eastern) food. I live in Thailand now and visit Turkey form time to time with my family - and eat excellent Turkish food whenever I go into Bangkok. Looking forward to the next in your Istanbul series...

Excellent job for giving the right information about when the city was named Istanbul. This wrong information has been going around forever (even by the well-known TV channels, universities and institutions), that the city was conquered and renamed in 1453 by the Ottomans. In fact the city was mainly called "Konstantiniye" by the Ottomans until it was finally renamed in the era of Republic of Turkey in 1930 (as you mentioned). Etymology of the name "Istanbul" is another story. Great job guys...
@mickandtrudie5 ай бұрын
Thank you for restoring my confidence in Wikipedia which I use a lot for information, From what I’ve read the name Istanbul was originally a derivative of what the Greeks called Constantinople, maybe you could confirm that 🤠🙏
@s.tancaglar38065 ай бұрын
@@mickandtrudie Etymologicaly speaking the name Istanbul is derived from the Classical Greek phrase "eis ten polin" or " stin poli" which can be translated as "to the City". Constantinople was considered as "the city" especially during the Eastern Roman era. The name Istanbul is the Turkified version of this old phrase so to say. There were other names used to refer the city in the Ottoman era which were also derived from the same phrase as Islambol, Istambol etc. However "Konstantiniye" was the official name of the city.
