5:17 The secret to restoring fascia
In this video, I’ll share 9 fascinating facts about fascia and the secret to keeping it healthy.
1. Fascia is the material that surrounds every muscle in the body.
2. Fascia gives the body posture and shape.
3. Fascia adapts to the environment.
4. Cells of the fascia or collagen are called fibroblasts. You have billions of these cells that can migrate through the body and lay down ground substance to allow lubrication and movement.
5. Fascia is highly involved with immune function. Myofascial release, massage, and trigger point therapy can help improve inflammatory conditions of the fascia, such as fibromyalgia and plantar fasciitis.
6. Fascia is stiffened by lack of movement. People often assume they have stiff muscles when they really have stiff fascia.
7. Your fascia extends throughout your entire body and is connected from head to toe. This is why you can often relieve pain associated with tight or inflamed fascia by fascial manipulation in other related parts of the body.
8. Fascia is innervated by tiny nerves that allow the body to know where it is in space, so it’s critical for balance and coordination.
9. Fascia can change in material properties and go from being very rigid to very elastic.
Dynamic motions in different directions can help restore fascia, so don’t do the same stretches and exercises repeatedly! High doses of vitamin D3, along with the cofactors vitamin K2, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin B6, also support your fascia's health.

Historically, I was unable to tie my shoes without sitting or squatting. Since I found the way to release fascia adhesion, I can touch the ground and I'm quite certain soon I'll be able to put my hands flat - almost there. After 3 decades of stiffness, it is still possible to recover to the degree that has never been available. Not even as a child. I'm sure the opportunity spans way beyond 3 decades.

I’ve been able to do that my whole life. 64 and still can! Another good exercise to keep your joints mobile is the Afghan squat. Have your legs spread slightly apart and squat all the way down till your booty taps the floor, then rest in that position. Try doing this while you’re weeding the yard or whenever you have a spare minute. Work your way up to 50 of these a day up and down. You can grab hold of a chair if you need to when starting out.

This is probably the most important video by Dr. Berg. Millions of people undergo spinal surgery each year because of they and their doctors think that their problems are caused by herniated discs. In reality, in 99,99% of the cases lower back, sacrum, sciatica and hip pains are caused by myofascial pain syndrome and by tight muscles, not by bulged discs, arthritis and other joint problems

I do shoulder hangs from a bar about every 90 minutes every day of my life. I get cracks of numerous vertebrae up and down my spine every single time I do it. And usually they end in a chain reaction where the bottom vertebrae of my back end up with an absolutely huge crack. I know exactly what's going to happen every time I do it. In every single time I do it it feels amazing.

I was 27 years old when I experienced a bulging disc and I had never been fitter in my life! After inspection I had serious degeneration of 2 vertebrae in the middle of my spine. The pain was bad and that area of my back has been a problem for the rest of my sporting/working life.

@@peterbulloch4328 It is likely that you have tight back muscles and maybe fasciitis. I had a bulging disc and degeneration of a few discs and suffered from a low back and hip pain on the right side. It turned out, all these problems were caused by tight QL and gluteal muscles and fasciitis on the right side. I was considering back surgery and stem cells injection, and then I found out what the real problem was. It took me a couple of months to stretch the muscles, and now all these problems are gone.

Taijiquan and QiGong is based around fascia exercise. This is the goal. Pull on the fascia you pull on the immune system. Pull on the immune system , immune system becomes stronger. Therefore you don't get ill. Simple. However to work the fascia you need to not use fast twitch muscles(pretty muscles). Most people don't even build the slow twitch thicker muscles around the bone. Let alone the Fascia. When you start to feel the elastic band that is our body; you're getting close to working this vital and integral part of our body As a Taijiquan teacher, I could talk about the spiderweb network of our body all day. Thank you Dr Berg for bringing this very broad subject to light. Cheers

Great, I always hope to hear Dr. Berg discussing Fascia. Learning about fascia help me understand better about traditional martial arts such as TaiChi. It is a common misconception to think TaiChi is about relaxing. Instead, it is about becoming elastic through posture. Taichi is not about any individual form, but about how you move with certain posture. Hanging the head and sinking the abdomen, curling the toes create vertical stretch; Opening the hips, shoulder, sinking the elbow create horizontal stretch. Maintain the trunk position helps maintain the fascia tension.

@@trindakajans165 I personally find @Practicalmethod channel helpful. I first heard the connection between taichi and fascia from @HyperarchFasciaTraining. I never directly train from them though, my taichi instructor does not like posting youtube videos. My experience is that good taichi instructors use different metaphors to explain the same thing from different angles. Knowing the connection between taichi and facia provides a scientific framework to understand taichi. When fascia is stretched, the tension gives an inflated elastic feeling, traditionally, it is described as 'Chi'.

I had the same impression about Thai Chi. The bow stance (if I name it correctly) is the one I used to explain to my friends, it gave me the impression its a sort of nerve stretching in lack of better explanation at that time. Tom Myers has been researching the actual meridian network in a western style, coined the term Anatomy Trains in the title of his book. About the efficacy of Thai Chi or Yoga for that matter - almost the same core principle, yet slightly different methods - when one is wrestling with a jar that doesn't want to open, there is trick: open your chest, pull back and hang your shoulders then stretch your hands lengthwise like if you were to reach into some invisible gloves, just try to reach further. That stretch will increase the power of your grip to the degree you will open the jar without any effort - the same that would not open before. Pure magic. If you can do the same to your entire body .. I've heard that expert Thai Chi folks are sort of flying in the air - never seen, though. Fascianating!

It used to be excruciating to have anyone work on me (massage, etc). Keto/Carnivore resolved all of the inflammation and I'm finally at a place that I can start actually moving again. My fascia no longer hurts just to touch my skin. I was looking for some videos that would help break up the fascia "stickiness". Hopefully the pinned videos can give me a place to start.

Haha, yes - ankles are also connected to the neck there is much more about it. A great book on the topic: Tom Myers - Anatomy Trains Arthritis is also fascia adhesion preventing the join to get back into its place or in severe cases preventing joint from movement, eventually causing degeneration due to radically decreased "flow of nutrients" caused by lack of movement. Just like the calves are pumping as secondary hearts, you do need loose fascia to have flow in your muscles to your joints along with the cardiovascular network. Between the muscle fibres there is capillary action pulling "liquid" - that can get stuck. (I found that some tough booze - 63% - does make things significantly looser, but you have to work it out from the pipework, otherwise its temporary, possibly the very reason why alcoholism is considered physical addiction or even the causing factor, since thinner liquid can penetrate to tight places carrying gunk that gets stuck after the alcohol evaporates ..) When you sit and slouch a lot, legs get shorter, pelvis tilts, upper back curves and then you stand up you get extra tension where you don't need and also the antagonists get stuck and it all perpetuates to the entire body. Joints will eventually get out of their ideal position and loose the ability to get back, further perpetuating the situation. I've had quite severe fascia adhesion all over my body and I had to develop my own technique to cure it. chiropractor will put the bones back together, although they don't deal with the original cause, leading to relapse. massage therapists will only address the belly of the muscle in areas where there is low concentration of nerves & veins, completely missing the point. Muscles are like pipework in the body and they get stuck on the end, right at the joint,, might actually be called tendons. Causing buildup of crap (scar tissue? slag material?) in the belly that leads to adhesion. Forceful massage then hurts, because the crap is coming out sideways, where it should be sealed, leading to more adhesion. Once you opened the ends, the belly goes almost on its own PERSISTENTLY. Joints just go back to there place without force. Circulation improves. Energy levels go up. Need for sleep goes down. What's the point of nutrition if the pipework that carries stuff around your body is clogged? Another place to look for, is where muscle branches crossing over each other, they can get stuck together and you loose the ability to isolate their movement. Hips, ankles, neck, .. - exactly where a massage therapist won't help you. Keep Going Dr Berg, your work is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! Thanks for the Vitamin D tip, I'll give it a go.

Agreed, the only exercise I do in my late 40s is walking 1 mile (2-3 times a day with my dogs) and a set of 30 abdominal rolls with a wheel every night (religiously 😂) with full extension, and I'm in the best shape of my life! I'm defined at 6 feet weighing around 168 lbs...I eat lots of fruit and vegetables and limit my intake of red meat every month. I've been watching this channel for years now, and I have to say... LISTEN to this man! He knows what he's talking about! Thanks Dr. Berg! You teach us so much beneficial information! I even changed careers! I'm in nursing school right now... Halfway done at the end of this week! ❤❤❤

Interesting...I've been wanting to get a massage for this reason. In my teen years I swam a lot and did some diving and I twisted my right shoulder and to this day I struggle with stiffness. My right arm has been injured. At 13 I had a compound fracture above my right wrist then in my 20's I tore ligaments in my right wrist. So, today I suffer from pain on my right side. This makes sense...Thanks...

I remember when I got frozen shoulder (on my left shoulder), my acupuncturist placed needles on my right calf. I asked him why he is poking my calf since it didn’t make sense 🤣. He then said it’s all connected. PT didn’t help so I went to see acupuncturist for the last resort but soon after the session, my year long frozen shoulder issue got resolved. 🙌

I am going to ask my physiotherapist to watch this, cause I don’t present with any pain in my lower parts of my body but I’m suspecting immobility on my lower half might be related to my upper neck/shoulder impingement/pain and what feels like rib pain. I can’t get that twinge from underneath my scapula to go away, I always feel like if I could crack my neck I’d get relief which is telling me I got referred pain but from where, can’t seem to figure out

Awesome as always! At my county job I am so fortunate to have yoga classes, and even more fortunate to have The Best exercise teacher I've ever encountered, named Miriam. She works our fascia and all our tissues, she smoothly and gracefully explains what body tissues she's working while she skillfully moves us into poses, keeping our breathing on point. She's fabulous! And she talks about dynamic movement as well. Her classes with us are never the same, and she focuses on things that will help our wrists and back and blood flow, since we sit and type all day. It's one of the most important things I do all week, and I make sure she knows that. Great info as always Dr. Berg, including tattling on yourself about the biking w/o doing other balancing exercise 😜😜 Hearing about the parts of the body you worked on to address problems in completely different areas is fascinating, but makes sense when you explain it 👌👍💫

When I used creatine for a month or so, I had horrible pain in my legs. I found out that I would have to drink about 3 times as much water because it was taking the water out of my fascia and putting it in the muscle. It took almost 2 months after I stopped using it to resolve the pain in my fascia.

I think people often treat stretching as an annoying little thing you do before resistance training or cardio, but it really deserves to be considered it's own exercise type. If you make time to carve out a cardio day, and a weight training day, you need to have a day where you just focus on stretching.
