Within the 10 year window is a good rule of thumb but advice earlier can also be helpful.

How is a spouse who never worked have ss benefits? Collect half of the husband? But the spouse never paid into ss. Someone please explain .

You got it, non working spouses are entitled to half of their spouses benefit while living and their full benefit after they pass away. So a married couple with only one working spouse can get 1.5 times the Social Security benefit of the working spouse during retirement
