In this video, Liam explains how to get started with handstand training.
Handstand training is, in my opinion, one of the most fun and enjoyable ways to learn more about your body and explore what you're capable of. The handstand itself develops shoulder strength, shoulder and thoracic mobility, wrist strength, core strength, and more.
Beyond that, learning the handstand takes you on a journey. You'll develop your proprioception (sense of your body in space), you'll discover how to elevate your scapula and find the limits of your mobility, you'll need to grease the groove and stick with it over months or even years. It's completely changed the way I train and I've still got a load to learn.
If that sounds daunting, keep in mind that there is a ton to be gained simply from playing around in an inverted position. Whether it's holding wall handstands or hopping into a more and more vertical position.
Here, Liam shows you how to get started and to start enjoying the benefits right away.

One thing that helped accelerate my progress was to practice far enough away from the wall so I could kick up and balance my handstand, but I still had the wall for support when overbalancing.

Thank you so much Liam! (and Adam for bringing him to us) I’ve been trying to learn to handstand for a few years, but I’m now reinspired to implement these tips and get to the point where I can actually balance away from the wall. Also, I liked the cool intro 👌😊

The way you explained this made me feel a lot more confident in working on handstands on my own. I've had some fear of jumping up into them after I tried it once, and went a little too far and bent a finger too far back. Ever since I haven't been able to try again, but I'm going to work some handstand practice into my days again.

Guys, I got really injured a couple of times by learning handstands outside without a wall, I didn't know how to fall. When you are at this stage, to prevent a hard hit on the floor, practice raising one hand when you feel that you are going forward before practicing anything else. It's a miracle I'm still alive, but hopefully you won't injure yourselves 😅

I'm just curious. Do you train any grapplings and climbing skills? Is there a way to train our eyesight? And lastly, this might sounded a little silly😅, since you train so many things, do you train your finger and toe nails to be stronger and more functional too?

I have a plated broken wrist so my mobility is limited. I can do 90 degrees with my right hand and maybe 75 degrees with my left. Is there another way to handstand that doesn't require full flexion of the wrist? Like on a block maybe?

Parallettes are your friend! Obviously check with someone who knows your medical history, first. But if it’s purely a mobility issue, you’re good to go. Smashes my right wrist into pieces, so you’re in good company 😅
