Hi David it's Ian Richards here, you and I trained together at Grindhouse a few years ago. I hope you're well 👍🏼 I'm competing at judo now, my achillies heel seems to be scarf hold. I recently missed out on a gold medal at an East Midlands comp due to this hold! 🤦‍♂️ Anyway I thought I'd see what KZbin had to say and your vid was the first that came up. I'm definitely going to drill your techniques, top stuff David 👍🏼

It will definitely help thanks 👍🏼👍🏼 I had a break of 8 years due to a sloppy uchi mata and 2 slipped discs in my neck, oops! 😂 I started judo again a while back and it's been a life changer. My son quit competing at gymnastics when the first lockdown happened. He's switched to judo and he's excelling at it. He's 16 and won gold at the East Midlands mens middleweight. He's going on to the Nationals in the near future. We're training 5 times a week currently and loving it ❤️ Are you still teaching in Burton?

This is legit the worst position to be in sometimes. Annoying when they bait you into giving them an arm to relieve the pressure. I hate when it tap to the pressure alone feel like a bitch lol. Thank you nonetheless! Very helpful bruv

Thank you for the many options! Professor, do you think Kesa and Kuzure Kesa are inferior positions from side control because the escapes are far more effective than the control and submission options from top? Kesa gets so little respect sometimes. I've had the unpleasant experience of being on bottom in Kesa against two separate black belt Judoka and it was miserable, struggling to breathe, and each movement seemed to have an anticipated counter. One in particular involved the arm getting into a Waki Gatame when I tried to reach my outer arm across in hopes of getting a frame. If you're a heavy guy, is it worth investing time in Kuzure Kesa from the top or are the escapes too good? And how do you stop the Waki gatame? I love kesa and kuzure kesa! The escape will always be harder than holding the position if both are correct. As for waki, watch for committing your arm too far across and letting your elbow be wrapped and trapped!

This is predominantly known as Kesa Gatame, the scarf hold is differentiated by the lack of an underhook on the far side.

Yeh in bjj we just call it all scarf hold, sometimes we call it modified scarf hold with the underhook :)

@@InvisibleJiuJitsu in BJJ it is officially the position known and Kesa Gatame. The two terms are often used interchangeably, but the escapes are not all universal.
