This video is all about the popular tourist destination of North India: Nainital.
This town in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, with a lake in between sits pretty high at 2,084 meters above sea level and has quite a bit of history around it, despite being settled by British only 180 years ago.
This video deals with geography of the region, tourism, history and some issues the city faces regularly.
Note: Most of the history is taken from:
'Notes of Wanderings in Himmala', 1843, Pilgrim.
Nainital, A historic and descriptive account, J.M Clay, 1928.
Kumaon Ka Itihas, Badridutt Pandey, 1937.
Well, enjoy the video!
Chapters:
00:00 - 01:15 Introduction
01:16 - 03:03 Geography

What a coincidence, i just saw a post on Instagram regarding Nainital and now on KZbin I'm watching a video based on it. I'll post the caption as it covers some interesting points not seen in the video- // 👇 Nainital region was called "Khasdesh" in ancient times and "Khasis" ruled this region before Christ was born. Once the Nainital area had many lakes and it was called the City of 60 lakes or 'Chakta'. The Nainital Lake finds mention in the Manas Khand (chapter) of the Skanda Purana (scriptures) as the Tri-Rishi Sarovar, i.e, the lake of the three sages (or rishis) Atri, Pulastya and Pulaha. Legend has it that in the course of their pilgrimage, the three sages arrived here, only to find the place without water. They dug a large hole at the present location of the lake and filled it with the holy water of Lake Mansarovar of Tibet. So great was the power of their tapasya (meditation) that the hole soon filled with water. The names of two foreigners is linked with the discovery of the Lake at Nainital. One of them G. W. Traill, Commissioner of Kumaon and Garhwal, was the first European to set eyes on it in 1823. Nevertheless, the lake had been known for quite some time to herdsmen from villages nearby and held in great reverence as an abode of gods and spirits. G. W. Traill had great respect for the traditions and beliefs of the hill folk. To his way of thinking, crowds would violate the sanctity of the place and the lake, so he kept the discovery of the Nainital Lake strictly to himself. It was Mr. P. Barron, a European merchant and an enthusiastic hunter from Rosa who reached the lake through a trick. He knew that local guides deliberately misled Europeans who wished to go there, in order to keep the location a secret. Barron placed a large stone on his guide's head and told him to carry it till they managed to find the lake. He mentioned to his guide that there were reputedly no stones near the lake and he needed some to build a house. Desperate to be rid of the load, the guide soon confessed he knew the lake well enough and there was no scarcity of stones in the general area. Barron says that other Europeans also resorted to the same trick till such time that Nainital found a place on the map. instagram.com/p/ChhtG-HFTrR/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=

Thanks for the addendum, especially when I forgot to add any sources, now taken care of. Now you have to understand the time constraints, I have to chop out a lot of stuff. Also the description you gave has a few issues. 1. Khasdes doesn't pertains to Nainital region specifically, Khas were/are the ethno-linguistic people of Himalayas and their desh can refer to anything from Himachal to Sikkim, or their kingdoms which existed now and then all over the hills. Just imagine this is yet another addendum over yours. 2. Chhakhata was an actual Pargana until India's independence, and later the administrative system changed, making the name largely obsolete. Besides it doesn't makes sense in a video just about the town of Nainital. 3. The credibility and acceptance of Puranas in Hinduism is, well a little shaky, they were written way later. And even in that Manaskhand isn't an actual chapter in 7 chapters of Skanda Purana. But all that stuff is religious so apparently it gets a free pass, even the story I told of Daksha Yagya is also in Maheshwar Khand of Skanda Purana. 4. I did mention British already knew about the lake. However, we don't know if Traill actually saw it. I mean, the guy literally went up the icefall of Pindari Glacier to the pass today known as Traill's pass, so it wasn't hard for him to see a lake just above the plains in the hills. Traill was also a little arrogant and unruly, the reason why he isolated entire Kumaon, (not only Nainital by the way) had more to do with maintaining distance from national bureaucracy and being more independent and powerful rather than his love for tradition, in my opinion. He did respect local people, religion and traditions. But, there are examples like when people once showed him some old copper inscriptions issued by old kings as proof of land ownership or some other issue, he said just melt them and make pots. History gets complex quickly, and while creating a video, or writing Instagram description for that matter, you have to actively choose what to leave and what to cut out. Hopefully I didn't overdo it.
