First off, I would 100% downsize massively. I’ve cleaned up my collection because it was getting so overwhelming and stressful to care for them all, especially if they had pests. Plants are supposed to be a positive thing and not bring you so much worry or completely wear you out. With the extent of your pest issues atm, I would just go with provanto. Sadly, the more you put it off, the worse it gets. You really need to get a handle on it asap and if you want to go back to predatories you can always do that when this outbreak has been dealt with. Don’t feel bad about throwing plants away if they feel like a lost cause. Big girl pants on. Do what you have to do 🙂

Fill the your big sprayer (i think you used it for mosquito dunks) with provanto and go to town spraying everything. Get rid of as many pests as you can, then reintroduce the natural preventative measures. Sometimes we need to do things we'd rather not do to get back to a good place, but otherwise, realistically, you'll probably be in the same position or worse in a few months time. I hope it works out for you!

Emma, you seem so drained and exhausted for a while now because of this pesty situation your entire collection is in qwq lots of love for you! I hope you'll get better soon and will be able to finally enjoy your plants to the fullest, again ♡ As for your pesty problem... I don't know if spraying down chemicals will solve anything, because there are so many issues with pests everywhere in your collection and flat... you would have to spray everything everywhere, clean your entire flat, because thrips might fly to hide somewhere else and mites tend to hide even in the smallest gaps of anything... that's a lot of work and I'm sure it's completely overwhelming, when having in mind, that you treated your collection already for such a long time know... I might suggest, that you consider releasing ladybugs, since they love to munch on all of these. No matter if thrips, aphids, mites of any sort or mealy bugs. They do a good job and eat them all with the speed of wildfire. They stick around, until your problem is gone and begin to fly, when the situation is under control. You then just open the window and let them out. My grandmother used to do this all the time, when she got her plants inside for autumn and winter and really, they don't fly around everywhere, when they have pests to feast on. They stick on the plants and do all the hard work for you, plus they aren't toxic to you and cleo qwq ♡ Lots of love for you and get better soon, Emma ♡

I want to say, that do whatever gets you fastest on track with loving and enjoying your plants and make a story out of it. Also, you invented plant math, maybe you can invent a way through the 8 weeks of using sulfur too. If the way out is provanto, you still have tried your best in saving the environment and undoubtedly will also in the future. So save yourself first, your livelihood next and then you can share all about it to all of us. Love your channel, dont ever feel bad about yourself!

I hope I am not too late, totally understand your pain. I have just under 200 plants and this year it was thrip city and flat mites horror. I have realised its worser if the plants are too jam packed and not enough air flow. At one point in our love for plants, we have to keep choosing the ones that keep giving us joy (even if they have pests). I sold many plants and restarted plants from cuttings just because its easier to manage and take care of- plus space gets freed up. I also only have 2 rooms which houses all my collection- I love plants but I realised in my last flat I needed space to quarantine new addition or plants with pests and frankly I like that the other rooms have no plants. I also no longer bother with beneficial mites, i had to do so many round for thrips and flat mites and eventually I realised I am not about all that stress. We have to make sure we are okay and then the plants can be okay because of us. After the failed predatory mites attempt- I went straight for chemical. Since I was so overwhelmed with pest this summer, I opted to treat thrips first. Because that needs more frequent assessing compared to flat mites with sulfur which was every 2 weeks for 8 weeks. I also made sure not to do everything all at once, for thrips I had no schedule anytime i saw anything- i would immediately spray it- and wipe down everything on that shelf and window not just the plants but the surfaces aswell. For hoyas, I would do sulfur treatment but I did it bit by bit- i would do half on one day and the second half the very next day. I also chose night time when my partner was asleep- that motivated me to get the treatment done with so I can go to bed aswell. I have also realised that if I wish to keep enjoying my plants and love them for a long time whilst continuing this hobby, I have to make sure I do whats best for me. I can not have plants covering the whole house because when i get pest- each room felt so stressful to me. It became unenjoyable and a negative experience. That was me living in plant stress in my whole flat since I associated the whole flat as stressful due to having plants everywhere. The sulfur marks are not pretty but I kid you not when I say let your plants look ugly for a bit and then they will look pretty once again and feel their best aswell. As well as whilst being treated for sulfur you will see new growth and that is another joy (ofc they will have to sprayed too but soon it will be worth it) Wish you plenty of luck and patience Emma, do not worry we have all been through this, especially UK heat and our windows staying open😬

Hi Emma, I think if it were my collection, I would do treatments on the plants that I could not live without, ones I truly truly love and I would let the others go. Best of luck with whatever decision you make. :)

I only have 1/4 size of your collection (yours is so lovely, the shapes and greens and textures are gorgeous), but in your situation, this is what I would do: Get rid of perhaps 10-20 or however many plants that you're willing to part with, and treat the rest with chemicals. You've tried very hard for awhile now the natural way, and it's so admirable, and no one would fault you at all for chemically treating your livelihood. Then you can have a fresh natural start. I hate to hear the stress in your voice, and I wish you only the best no matter what you decide! ❤️💚

I started the year with 5 plants and now I have almost 300. I used bonide when I had thrip outbreak in July as I was ill. Recently, I found a few thrip, so I spent £40 on 50 sachets of predatory mite. The delivery wasn't the fastest, then Evri didn't deliver them when they should and I ended up waiting two weeks in total. In-between ordering the mites and them arriving, I have had an outbreak of fungus gnat, and I have found mealy bugs in my cactus/succulent collection, and the thrips have spread despite me quarantining them. Now I have 50 of 300 plants with predatory mites that won't even treat the mealy bug or fungus gnat. I have spent the past week not knowing what to do and just feeling like I have completely lost control of the whole situation. Meanwhile, I still have a load of bonide left. I could have the whole plant collection treated with systemic and sprayed with SBPI within a few hours and it would be done for at least two months, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Personally I think we do natural pest control as much as we can (she says only ever having had fungus gnats), however, if you love a plant and want to keep it, treat it with the hard stuff. It’s there for extreme circumstances and yes no one wants to use it but given you do all the good you can ALL the time, one cheeky use of the hard stuff is perfectly okay IMO ❤❤❤

Hello Emma, I have read in various videos and articles that you should pay particular attention to the fertilizer when fertilizing in semi-hydroculture. Using the wrong fertilizer can cause plants to become more susceptible to pests. Many plant lovers therefore determine the PH level and the microsim value of the tap water, etc. Maybe this is where your current problem lies?
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 11 ай бұрын
the fertiliser I use (Liquid Gold Leaf) is also suitable for semi-hydro & is pH balanced, so I don't think that's the issue but that is some good info. Thanks!

I think that having pests on houseplants is the norm. Learning to keep them under control without letting the situation stress you out is what is important. I recently realized that using a hand vac on my plants not only cleans the leaves of dust but also pests. Also, though misting doesn't necessarily raise humidity, spider mites hate water, so spraying your plants with at least a mister should discourage them. I would try to incorporate as many pest prevention tasks into to my general plant care as possible. Small house spiders also are great at catching pests. I have plenty of those also. Good luck with the mental battle.
@GoodGrowing

poke extra holes in the sachets! sometimes i find they get stuck, or just dont release enough to control the pests -- having extra mites spread out faster wouldn't hurt. you could also try multiple different bugs at once. Mites, nematodes, & lacewings? Either way will require some extra input, be it bugs or spraying. Good luck!!

If they stress you out then get rid of them! If you decide to keep them you could quarantine them with a clear bag or put it in a clean bin, I don´t know if that works with a beneficial might sachet, but it definitely works if you spray it with insecticide and then wrap it up still wet. It keeps the insecticide wet and active for longer, and keeps all the bugs inside and protect the other plants from it. I think predatory might work better to prevent, than to actually cure a heavy infestation. So don´t feel bad if you decide to use chemicals for something like this. You can always tray to categories or group the plants that you treat with pesticide, because they are heavily infested and the once you keep treating with mites because they might just have a few or non. ALSO does the sulfur kill the mites? would it make sense to just use all the chemicals on all plants and then start new with mites as a prevention for the future once it´s over?
@regi985
@regi985 11 ай бұрын
also if you do the sulfur on all plants and struggle with the plants looking unsightly, just try to focus on the good thinks, new leaves, less damage,... and once in a while you can pick a plant, shower it off, take nice pictures and enjoy it all clean, and then treat it again. If you do it before it needs to be treated and watered anyway it wouldn´t be much extra work and might keep you happy enough to pull trough. And I can tell you we won´t care if your plants have white marks, but we care if you are stressed and unhappy 😘
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 11 ай бұрын
I believe that the sulphur works on flat mites, thrips, & spider mites so it's kind of like a cure all, just somewhat unsightly. But I think that's the right direction to go and do what you mentioned about showering off a plant, taking pictures etc & treating again. Thanks for the advice!
@SparkleInMoonlight
@SparkleInMoonlight 11 ай бұрын
I´d either water everything with systemic pesticide effective both on thrips and spidermites (for flatmites) and for the first treatment, I´d shower then and spray them too (the entire collection and clean all surrounding areas). For next treatments, I´d continue with only watering from the top with various systemic pesticides and kept watering with various systemics until now adults and larvae are visible (no more spraying to save your time and sanity). Then I would use neem oil sprays for a month and then I´d buy a massive amount of beneficials. OR our producer says for this amount of pests it´s necessary to buy 5x the amount of beneficials then usual to actually destroy the pests. Emma, fingers crossed that all goes well for you and your collection 🍀🍀🍀 P.S. I wouldn´t downsize the collection or throw away plants - this can be solved without losses, I believe :-) The plants will survive it and grow back

@@GoodGrowing Emma, here in central Europe (Czech Republic, Germany etc.) we use (I write the chemicals hoping you can find products with it in the UK too): 1. Careo Substral (acetamipirid - systemic neonicotinoid) - works great on everything (thrips, mites, and everything imaginable) - even if you only water with it, it will spread into the entire plant (however I´d also wash & spray for the first time to make things faster). Careo also sells some soluble sticks for pots, but that´s slower. 2. Sanium System (flupyradifuron- systemic neonicotinoid) - the best possible systemic on thrips, doesn´t work on mites as far as I know. Visibly works within 1 hour of application. 3. Vertimec (abamektin, the best thing ever on all mites and works well on all kinds of thrips too) - this one is not systemic, but translaminar (i.e. watering with it wouldn´t be enough, a bit of spraying is needed but then it spreads through translaminar motion to neighbouring plant tissues that were missed when spraying). None of these chemicals leave stains on plants and were ok for every houseplant I tried it on. Hope this helps🍀

@@GoodGrowing good question!, for thrips I only found like 10 of the black ones in one 1 plant (I think they are the adults) so I just showered the heck out of that one!, 99% of my plants are in semi hydro so I am not worried about them being in the substrate, for flat mites I do a dunk on a solution of water, horticultural soap and baby oil, that worked but my hindu rope still has some :( so I'm thinking on maybe getting some predatory mites? which ones do you use?, and for spider mites I used predatory mites and that worked pretty well but I see them more on the plants that are in the cabinet I think its too cold and dry for the normal room condition plants but I do think it did the job they just died right after... I am already enjoying your Patreon! the spooky live chat was good fun to watch!

Emma! That Dorayaki is gorgeous! If only we lived closer together I would definitely run round and snag that from you 😂 it’s stunning 😍 so pleased to see your other anthuriums growing in the cabinet again! Impressed with your dedication to the sulphur treatments 🫶

Hi Emma, I'm so glad other people are coping with 16C temperatures too... I don't have any Central Heating and I'm expecting most of my lovely plants to perish this Winter. I figure it's probably cheaper to buy new ones next year than to try heating the ones I have for 3 months! It has turned suddenly cold, but who knows - maybe it'll be hot again next week! Good luck with your pesties 💚🌿

holy cow how do you live without central heating! You could always try a heat mat or something like that? Low energy use but still helps temp wise

I’d say if your going to throw them out, treat them with boiling water and let nature take its course 😂 Maybe stock up on photos and videos then treat with sulphur, you can show us a 8 week update. I think plant parents will understand if your plants aren’t looking 100% because we’ve dealt and are dealing with pests. Hope you doing okay though 💚🛠️

lol 8 weeks of photos & videos is a whole hell of a lot! but I defo think it would be the right route

If the natural route isn’t working then highly recommend sb plant invigorator as a systemic treatment/feed. Haven’t had thrips or spider mites since switching to that. The concentrate bottle is more cost effective than the pre-made spray bottle. Been using it for nearly two years now on my collection of over 200+ plants and not a single thrip

oooh okay I do have some SB invigorator already so maybe I just do that

Have you tried breeding your own beneficial bugs? It might be more cost effective than buying them, for such a large collection. You could turn your home into a biosphere.

oooooh that would be cool... not sure how much joe would like it though 😂

Keep in there with the pest treatments, i can only imagine the worry about the aesthetics of the whole collection being covered in sulpher treatment and im not having to create houseplant content for a living. With the jungle cacti you want to get rid of, msybr you could provanto and then pass them on to people with them knowing the risk? But don't feel guilty if you want to bin, sometimes it gets to that last resort with a problem plant. Especially if you have loads of other things to be busy with. Yes to the 🛠 video!! I have one i need some inspiration for!

yeah I think I might just have to bite the bullet on the aesthetics and suck it up... especially going into winter it probably wouldn't be the worst thing
