I’m currently nursing back my black velvet and my silver dragon that both took a nosedive when I went away on a family trip! I pulled out my heat pad for seed starting and gave them some makeshift humidity domes and it’s really made a big difference but they’re definitely still in the danger zone! Sending good vibes too all of the sad alocasias in this community 💚

I love Alocasias! I also have 6 but it’s the Polly, black velvet, Frydek, dragon scale, ninja & silver dragon. Surprisingly the black velvet grows the fastest for me. Under grow lights & 45-60% humidity 🥴 temperature at 65°-79° 😄 Great video! ❤ Would love to see an update on them in a few months!

Love your alocacia collection. Our collections are almost the same. I have: Polly, Bambino, Regal Sheilds, Quilted Dreams, Aslanii, Cuprea, Green Dragon Scale, Silver Dragon Scale, Zebrina, Pink Dragon, Platinum, Macrorrhiza Varigata and about 25 corms with their first leaves up and second ones forming. I love these guys. And now I'm playing with two Colocasias. A Ilustris, and a Pharoah's mask. They were rescues, where I had to cut away dead roots, infested damaged leaves and take it back to the corm. Both have recovered and now have two new leaves. I can't wait to see how big they get.

My favorite alocasia is the azlanii. I can't believe it isn't more popular. It has glossy leaves like the cuprea, but the veins are purple and the margins and petioles are bright green.

This was so timely as I have literally just received a Scalprum and a Jacklyn. I was looking at my Jacklyn and just thinking I'm sure there's another part to the name and hey presto you mentioned it and popped it on the screen! They are both absolutely gorgeous and my collection is definitely growing as I have a total of 9 now. My top 3 favourites are the 2 I've just received and my Alocasia Platinum. Once you get the hang of them they are so addictive, oh hang on a minute ALL plants are addictive, LOL. 🤣

Hey Fern I have to say that the “Dark version “ of the Dragon Scale is very stunning. I have 15 Alocasian through trial and error often starting with no leaves they continue to amaze me. There’s unfortunately much false info out there pertaining to humidity and moisture but that all is relative to your location of this beautiful planet. 50% and airy soil/ substrate plus good and much nutrients are essential. Fish emulsion is my latest find and it’s FANTASTIC but it does stink for a while. My leaves are a lime green color too but I will be giving it more light and see if it gets darker. I have an Azlanii that pushed out a new leaf but that leaf won’t grow. Why is that? I have many in different Substrate, Perlite, Pons, Lecha, and Soil which shows that they adapt to any good healthy environment. Due to my living space I do enjoy the Jewel Alocasia better although my Regale is Wunderschöne but huge. Keep giving knowledge. Thanks for the video.

I got my silver dragon almost a year ago now, and I love it! It has been very easy to care for, and I’m saying that as someone who lives in a dry desert. I’ve been wanting to get more Alocasia, especially the tandurusa. I was instantly obsessed when I saw it in your unboxing vid ☺️

Great video! Your Alocasia are gorgeous! I have tried to care for 4 different species of Alocasia, and they all have needed different light, and watering care. I'm down to 2 and both (Dragon Scale & Zebrina Reticulata) are thriving and leaves are starting to size up, I love them both! Its like once I found the sweet spot in my home they finally started to thrive. Moral is all Alocasia are not created equal, if one type isnt working in your environment try another, there are so many affordable amazing Alocasia to chose from, your dark green Frydeck is very tempting, I may give it a try next! Thanks again Miss Fern, your vids have helped me actually develop a nice healthy collection of plants that bring me joy every single day❤🌱

I've found Alocasia very temperamental in soil substrate, but do very, very well in semi hydro. When my Tigrina took a nosedive, I decided I had nothing to lose by converting it to 'pon' at that point. It acclimatised very quickly and started to thrive. Due to that I converted my Dragon Scale which did the same. I need to convert my Bambino, but I hate the chore of removing all the soil from the roots, so I've been putting it off 😂 I tend to buy corms now, so I can skip soil removal from the plant and just grow them from scratch. I root them in pon and then there is no transition from rooting to planting

I love Alocasia :) I have the black velvet, cuprea, silver dragon, and dragon scale, which might be my fav. My black velvet is finally out of the one leaf club, haha. It held onto that one tattered leaf for months; put out two flowers with it, then finally a new leaf, and then a tiny leaf below that one that looks like a separate plant! It looks like another leaf is coming out again, so I’m stoked for it. Three leaves?? Omg

Exactly! My black velvet seemed to be in a dormant state for a long time. Every time a second leaf grew, the first leaf just died back. Since I have had in a very chunky soil and started watering with rain / distilled water, it seems to be doing a whole lot better. It seems to grow so much faster for me in summer, with a lot higher temperatures.

I love alocasia! Your tips are spot on and I agree once you figure them out for your care style/conditions they are really hardy plants. I wonder if as they mature they need soil or moss on their stem to promote new larger leaves (maybe like some anthurium?). I might experiment! I notice when my mature alocasia stems get longer, the leaves get smaller and sometimes stop. I repotted one deeper in the soil and the leaves got bigger/faster. I love restarting corms from my mother plants, they grow so fast! Your plants are😍

Stunning alocasias!! My first was the amazonica, it's not dead but the mature huge leaves are gone and it's only putting out small leaves now. I recently moved it closer to a grow light so fingers crossed. For the cuprea and micholitziana, they are huge and sitting in front of a window living their best life. Last but certainly not least, the dragon scale, I wanted this one soo badly and we have our struggles trying to find his sweet spot. Either way, I will keep trying with them (amazonica and dragon scale)... Love alocasias despite the stories.

There’s a silver form for the Dragon Scale? 😮 Seriously yours is sooo uniquely beautiful. Can’t get over the color. Also realised the leaves are bigger than your hand. That’s huge! Yay! As I've mentioned before, Alocasia is my favorite genus. I have almost 50 different kinds. Following along with your video. 1. Dragon Scale is definitely still one of my top favorites. I've always loved the way yours has looked. I rehabbed two of mine from the brink and now they're thriving. 2. I've been rehabbing my Black Velvet for a while. I do feel they're a little more tricky though so don't feel bad. 3. Your Cuprea looks amazing! It's grown so much. Mine's putting out a new leaf too. Our Alocasia have not gotten the memo that it's winter and I'm not complaining. 😂 4. If you like the Maharani's texture, you should check out the Melo. That has really cool texture as well. They look similar but I believe the Melo's leaves stay a bit smaller. 5. I remember the unboxing and comments on the Tandurusa. I'm not the one who left the initial comment though. For people who don't know the story, the person who named the plant 'Jaclyn' apparently poached it which is why we're trying to deter people from using that name. And Tandurusa means Deer Horns so definitely fitting. Sorry for the rambling comment but I can talk about Alocasia for hours so I was super excited for this video! 🥰😂

I see soooo many people having a hard time with Black Velvet while over here mine gave me 10 corms and they all rooted and gave me new plants. Plus the mother plant keeps pushing out huge leaves. Lol. My struggle is dragon scale!!! It took about 8 months to give me new leaves. Haha. Also, I loveeeee alocasia jacklyn! It’s such a BEAUTIFUL plant that gives you no problems. Oh, and I too was afraid of alocasia because of everyone saying they’re spider mite magnets. I’m so glad I finally caved in and got a few because I absolutely love them!

Alocasia are my favorite too. Oddly enough though I have all mine in self watering pots and they love it. I don’t know why I put my first one ever, the black velvet, in a self watering set up but I’ve had it for maybe over two years and it has NINE, yes 9 bug leaves on it. So from that point all my Alocasia get set up this way. I currently have the cuprea, silver dragon, maharani and dragon scale which are new in this set up and so far so good. My amazonica i’ve had for years too but is in soil, and it has lost its large leaves and is giving me the small now too but I don’t want to disturb just yet. They are my favorite for sure! I would LOVE the Jaclyn too
@AquaStevae

You stating how many Alocasia's you have, prompted me to count mine, as I honestly wasn't sure how many I had. But I have 27 different kinds of Alocasia's, and some of them I have more than one of any one kind. So yeah, I have a ton of them. The Micholitziana was my favorite Alocasia, until I got a Watsoniana, and it's like a Micholitziana on Steroids, as it also has the dark green leaf fronts with bright white venation, but the green has a circular pattern on it, and the white venation looks more like the verucosum with wingtips at the edges. It also has a more interesting deep purple backseal, with bright green chartreuse petioles. It's just a seriously ridiculously beautiful Alocasia. I am wondering why you're still growing them in soil, however? You are one of the YT'rs who helped me make up my mind to switch to leca, perlite and pon. Now MOST of my plants are in leca/perlite or pon/perlite, and they are all doing much better than when they were in soil. Every weekend, I convert another few of my plants over. And my goal is to get all soil out of my house by the summer.

@Javier Villegas They are in a mix of orchid bark, perlite and tree fern fiber with some fluval, pumice stones and Worm castings thrown in. You could easily do 1 third each of potting mix, perlite and orchid bark, and they would be just as happy. I've used that many times. I had those other things for some of my more finicky plants, so I used it 😊 They're not finicky for me at all, but they do like a bit more moisture than my other airoids. Best of luck!

I’ve got. Pink dragon that I love. It’s my first one in over a year. My first one was an Alocasias Polly. It suddenly went horizontal and then started yellowing. After losing the leaves I watered that stuff for another 6 months because I’d heard that they can go dormant. It was just dead.

I need help identifying a plant. I've looked up apps to help me and watched a bunch of videos. I'm finding it either an alocasia elephant ear or philodendron gigantium. I don't think it's the elephant ear because it has more philodendron like roots, but looking into the gigantium I don't think it's that either. It has large ish size leaves that have wavey sides, and it looks like it will be a climbing plant. (Sorry for bad spell on plant names 🤪)

I have a black velvet for a few years now. The times this plant has died back to one or no leaves and grew back is bizar. It’s the strongest, but most dramatic, alocasia in my experience. To me it seems to like a little bit warmer temperatures and higher humidity. I have it in a very chunky soil mix (just mostly orchid bark) and it’s loving it in there. I water it with distilled water., and it hasn’t died back since. Also, it seems to not root as deeply as other alocasia’s for some reason.

I have a love hate relationship with alocasias, I love how they look for other people, but I struggle to keep them alive inside. During the warm months they'll grow outside just fine if I was able to keep them alive. I know the corms can go dormant and then come back later. I have recently had a couple of black velvets pop up unexpected in pots with recycled potting mix.

My Frydek throws a fit every year when the temps get cold. She faints and I have to cut her leaves off, but she immediately starts regrowing. She’s a little drama queen but at least it’s only short lived, I think it’s just a large Frydek thing! She’ll be back soon ❤

your jacklyn is amazing! i think i want one. right now I'm loving my dragons breath that I've been growing from corms and they are doing well. and i think i want to get a black velvet again after selling the ones i had. it was, contrary to yours, my easiest alocasia ever and the one that was kind of my redemption story and got me to try growing other varieties of alocasia.
