One of my favourite moments in the whole trilogy is how Boromir says "they have a cave troll" like he's working in a restaurant and a family of 8 comes in ten minutes before the kitchen is supposed to close. Just the mix of frustration but resignation to the fact that you will need to deal with a situtation that you'd hoped to avoid.

The war in consequence of Morgoth's escape would be called Dagor Dagorath and would be fought in Valinor. @@mistamemewide if you think about it. The fellowship epitomizes the bare bones classes in DnD. The hobbits are rogues, Boromir is a fighter, Gandalf is multiclassing wizard and sorcerer, Gimli is a barbarian, then we have Legolas and Aragorn as our rangers

I also love how the wizards' staffs are different according to the wielder (like a wand or lightsaber). Saruman's being ornate, sleek, and symmetrical, Gandalf's is worn, wooden, and outdoorsy, Radagast's is shorter, dirty, and twisty, and then Gandalf the White's is longer, brighter, and holy.

As Sir Ian McKellan visited my school and I met him, I can absolutely attest to the fact that he is always great. You have to remember that closer to Mordor you are, closer the will of Sauron is to you Bilbo was far away in the shire, also Sauron was weak and deminished at the time, while during the last days of the war of the ring Frodo was in the middle of Mordor and Sauron was so powerful that he manifested as a giant godlike eye leading his armies So its not fair to compair, Frodo never showed signs of madness and corruption in the shire just like his uncle

something similar happens multiple times, where the two "comic relief" hobbits actually step up with no hesitation and show courage for Frodo - like soon after that very moment, the Nazgul attack the hobbits at that tower because they draw attention with the fire (the scene where Frodo gets stabbed), the first to step up is Sam of course, then he gets tossed, but then Merry and Pippin stand close together in front of Frodo as a hobbit-shield before they get tossed to either side and Frodo stumbles etc. It's a small detail, but it stays a consistent character trait for both throughout the trilogy.

You know this channel is good when it somehow makes you "remember" how truly exceptional these films/books were, even though they are your favorite of all time. Example, I never noticed how it was deliberate to not have the ring bounce when Bilbo lets go of it. Which is what every ring actually does in real life. My sisters theory on why the Hobbitses eat so much, is that they have a crazy high metabolism. We see many times that Hobbitses (when pushed or actually try;) are capable of incredible feats of strength and speed for their size. They also prove to have endurance surpassing most humans. They would require a lot of food for fuel, but most Hobbits just laze about, doing nothing. Her theory goes; Hobbits used to be nomadic adventurers and ate a dozen meals a day out of necessity, and probably smoked weed just to calm down enough to settle or rest. When the world became too hostile for the little folk, they took to the shires and dug themselves in (literally.), but they never shed their eating and smoking habits. Kinda like the Islanders from Moana, they are a people who found comfort and stagnation in their new environment and their lazy lifestyle has left them all feeling empty inside because they were born for something bigger! I like the theory because it explains a lot! Hobbits also have tons of games and sports, and love throwing parties and celebrations, because they have so much energy pent-up! It explains their proportions and build, which is suited to long journeys with short bursts of speed and agility, with finely tuned senses. The have great senses of smell, sight and awesome hearing thanks to their large and slightly pointed ears. It explains why most of them find that they are braver than they thought, because they have the hearts of adventurers! I think it works. I love Hobbits and I like to think of them as being in a temporary lull that will end in the Hobbits taking to the world again to draw new maps as big as they have paper to fit. Hobbits aren't just stoners, they have the metabolism of an olympic athlete, and the potential to match! Maybe it's all a ruse to lull the other races into complacency! Tricksy Hobbitses! Tricksy dirty Liars! Not to be trusted! Nevertrustahobbitsesthyliaaaccgllp! GgllaallLP! Gollum! ... Except for Smeagol. Smeagol is friend. Trust Smeagol.

They cut out stuff that wasn't necessary to the overall plot, which is more than I can say for most movie adaptations. 9:05 - I got to stand that exact spot in 2010, about 11 years after filming. The cut where the Hobbits hide from the Black Rider is still there. Fun note: just to the right of where Frodo is standing is downtown Wellington. That's right! Some of these shots are expertly crafted. Also, further up the slope on the left of Frodo was a bunch of photographers who worked for various news publications. They all wanted to see how Middle Earth would come alive. You can visit many of the filming locations in NZ. Definitely want to get back there some day...

But beneath that is a very gentle soul who loves wandering from place to place to eat, smoke, drink and laugh with people he can learn from. I had the great fortune of seeing all three extended editions in theaters over Labor Day weekend. It was freaking amazing and I still can't believe how well the special effects held up. Also, I normally don't like it when movie theaters crank up the base, but being able to literally feel my seat shake when Sauron's helmet hit the ground actually added a whole new level of immersion to the movie. I would add a few more wins that you didn't cover: 1. Merry and Pippin arguing about how to light the firework rocket and subsequently getting caught always makes me laugh. 2. Aragorn's badass introduction deserved at least 10 wins. 3. Arwen being able to sneak up on Aragorn. It makes her character so much more interesting than just some pretty lady love pining for Aragorn. 4. The helicopter shots of Arwen being chased by the Nazgul. It might just be the best chase scene ever filmed, even if it isn't book accurate. 5. Maybe you'll get to it in part 2, but the costume design in these movies was phenomenal. So much detail and hard work went into each single costume, much of it you wouldn't even be able to catch unless you watched the movies multiple times in a movie theater. Not to get too negative, but I am kind of sad you are reviewing the theatrical cut, and not the extended edition. Could you please at least do the extended edition for Return of the King? They cut so much stuff for the theatrical release with that one..

Kirsten Paff part of the reason why the special effects hold up so well is because there are a LOT of miniatures, practical effects and in general a lot of time and training and rehearsing that went into just about every scene. The cg is still there but it’s more added to flesh out most things and give them scale and depth and oomph. There are seldom shots of only cg

The trick was to go light on the CGI and mainly use practical effects like miniatures and 'big'atures, scale doubles for gimli and the hobbits and perspective shifting. The times when it's greenscreened you can kind of tell due to slight shifts of lighting, so it's amazing that things like sets were so well utilised to make a fantastical world

I don't know how these movies were so good. It doesn't make sense, something should have gone wrong. ANYTHING could have gone wrong, and yet... We ended up with one the most amazing film series that ever blessed the theatre. And it has not aged a day. The effects are so amazing that nothing feels out of place even after all this time. Even the oft-repeated complaint of "Return of the King has too many endings" is small potatoes. The only real flaw there was the editing - using the fade to black transition too many times. The scenes themselves, absolutely none of them are out of place. I wouldn't cut a single one of them.

It always bugged me that Aragon was able to ward off the 5 Ringwraiths on top of Weathertop, but then the Witch-King totally humiliates Gandalf during the battle for Minas Tirith. However, I just recently watched the Fellowship again, and come to the conclusion that the Nazgul's power is tried to Sauron's strength and power. During the Fellowship, Sauron is weak in comparison to the other movies, so it would make sense that the Nazgul are also weaker as well. This realization doesn't discredit Aragon's courage and ability to fight. He still took on five undead Ringwraiths.

I've grown up with the extended additions plus all of Tolkien's books being drilled into me, and I think the Balrog fight is perhaps one of the most understated moments in the trilogy, I mean its perhaps the most impactful from a lore standpoint arguably the most pure Maiar spirit Mithrandiir going toe-to-toe with the fallen Maiar, Durin's Bane the most fabled Balrog, we had perhaps the biggest adversarial resolution without even realising it had happened. And when you read into it, this really shows just how expansive the Tolkien-verse really is to include something so major as though it was but another leg of the journey.

With regards to Gandalf "forgetting" about the Ring and its history, it's also worth mentioning that the Istari - the order of wizards that Gandalf, Saruman, and Radaghast all belong to - didn't even come to Middle-Earth until a thousand years into the Third Age, as a response by the Valar to Sauron's returning power. The defeat of Sauron and Isildur's claiming of the Ring heralded the end of the Second Age. So Gandalf wasn't even on Middle-Earth when that happened at all, so it makes sense that while he might know *of* the Ring, he's never been in its presence *and* conscious of its presence before.

However, it's worth noting that the ring has a form of sentience all its own, and great but subtle power as well. It may very well have been actively hiding itself from Gandalf, just like how Gandalf was able to hide Narya, the Ring of Fire, when was held by Saruman. At least, I presume he did, because there's no way Saruman would have left it in his possession otherwise.

Going by book lore :), Saruman was the one to study the ringlore and other 'arts of the enemy', and he was the expert of the White Council on those matters, but he eventually turned traitor. The ringlore itself was rather obscure, the information about it were partly lost, as the Rings were forged in the middle of Second Age, thousands of years before Istari arrived. Saruman shared the most important knowledge about the Rings of Power with other members of White Council, including Gandalf, on meetings they had, he was already also taking up efforts to search for the Ruling Ring but he couldn't find it, in the same time he also undermined the council's activities in trying to convince them the danger is miniscule as the One Ring is lost and will never be found. Gandalf also could not know all the details about the Ring, as Saruman also didn't reveal all he knew. The Istari's main goal was to inspire and help Middle-earth's people, to guide them, not to do everything for them. Their bosses wanted to have as little collateral damage as possible that would be inevitable if they used their powers openly. But that doesn't mean they couldn't get proactive stance, Wizards had a long term planning to do and counteract to the moves of the Enemy, which was incredibly difficult considering he worked in secret in that time, avoiding all vigilance. "They first appeared in Middle-earth about the year 1000 of the Third Age, but for long they went about in simple guise, as it were of Men already old in years but hale in body, travellers and wanderers, gaining knowledge of Middle-earth and all that dwelt therein, but revealing to none their powers and purposes. In that time Men saw them seldom and heeded them little. But as the shadow of Sauron began to grow and take shape again, they became more active and sought ever to contest the growth of the Shadow, and to move Elves and Men to beware of their peril. Then far and wide rumour of their comings and goings, and their meddling in many matters, was noised about the Men; and Men perceived that they did not die, but remained the same (unless it were that they aged somewhat in looks), while the fathers and sons of Men passed away. I think there are three reasons why this movie trilogy was so epic and awesome. 1) The script stayed extremely close to the books. Yes, they cut out Tom Bombadil and some songs, but those never contributed much to the overall story. 2) The films were simply gourgeous. The CGI and live action sets and backgrounds were SO well done. Some people complained that some scenes are more of a commercial for New Zealand tourism than contributing the to the film, but I disagree. 3) The stars were well cast and played their parts to a tee. Even the supporting actors are memorable in these movies. 3a) Sean Bean memes FTW!!

I’m listening to the Rob Inglis audiobooks these days. I’ve read the novel numerous times, but hearing the audiobook version really makes it obvious how much of Tolkien’s dialog was used word-for-word in the movie script.

I absolutely adore these movies. They r my favorite book adaptation. They r so close to the books and yet they add so much with the music and the visuals. I can rewatch these movies a hundred times over. And I'm talking about the extended cuts too

It always make me chuckle in my head when Saruman tells Gandalf his love of the Shire's weed has addled his mind when, in the third book, it is explained that he had tons of Shire weed in Orthanc.

The epic journey begins. One actor win I would give, is when the Hobbits are running from the Nazgul and getting on the raft to go to Bree, and Frodo does that epic jump from off the pier? No effect or stunt double there. Elijah Wood really did that great long jump. The entire Moria sequence, from the fight with The Watcher, Gandalf and Frodo's conversation about Gollum, mercy and "all we have to decide what to do with the time that is given to us," Gandalf lighting up the hall while that epic sweeping score plays, the fight with the orcs and troll, and finally the Balrog... its got to be one of my favorite parts of any movie.

Yeah. Gandalf's 'all we have to decide' quote is one of most important ones in whole trilogy, because it defines Frodo arc and allows him to survive till the end of destruction of the ring.

For me, the thing that elevates this series above everything else is the camerawork. There is very rarely a wasted shot in the entire trilogy. For example, the One Ring is almost always zoomed in on when it is in the frame, showcasing the power and significance it holds. Hell, even minute things like zooming in on Gandalf's face to show he's figuring out the puzzle of the Ring back at the beginning of the movie. I cannot name a single movie off of the top of my head that comes at all close to The Lord of the Rings in that regard.

Definitely. This was a great and somewhat rare example of every person and department pouring love and care into their creation of the movie, coupled with every shot packed with meaning and history. You can feel the love and care and devotion in every frame of this movie.

10:12 I was watching these movies with my family for the first time a few months ago, and my 10-year-old sister would often get confused over who is who, cause there are so many names. She kept forgetting Aragorn's ranger name, and somehow, someway, opted instead to call him.... Salmon Cookie I have no idea where it came from, but from then on, we called him Salmon Cookie.
