You gave a good message, rather warning ,to freshmen out there that it's up to them to continue the criticism as a curse to UChicago or bring out constructive criticism like you did, for the UChicago community as a whole. You might be more suited to an LAC (liberal arts college!) Smaller colleges tend to be less competitive (though some still are) -- though I guarantee you, every single university is very competitive if you go into certain areas or clubs! I’m an incoming first year at UChicago and I found this video (and the one about what you love about UChicago) really helpful! That being said both r kind of what I imagined going into the college! I will say I think the racial profiling is a huge issue in international communities. As someone growing up in the US (my parents are Indian immigrants), i think/hope UChicago students in the US have a good grasp on what it means to be racially profiled, understand issues like red lining, and know that racial profiling (especially of black people) is a huge problem. However, my parents natural instinct is to be more wary of the area because it’s predominantly black even though the have been here for many years. Additionally, my dad went to BOOTH school for his MBA many many years ago so my Indian grandparents have visited south side Chicago. They also tell people in India that it’s dangerous because of the black people and that all the black people in south side are sketchy and that they have had scary experiences. This makes me sad but it’s hard to change the mentality they are raised with. I’m just trying to see how I can help international students form India understand that this is not the situation in Chicago. Sorry for this long monologue (that is poorly worded) but I agree that from what I have seen w/o even entering the college- the international community has a warped perception of the south side and the black community. Anyways thanks for ur videos and hope to run into you on campus!

"dismissive listening" - that's beautiful. It persists in alumni, only more so. Chicago is the most segregated American city I know. Not only are the tensions everpresent, with a heavy, ugly vibe, but Hyde Park is a special circumstance that requires a kind of split thinking I haven't seen since I used to meet white South Africans in apartheid days. I've never seen tension like I have across the counters on the U of C campus where the cashier is fully aware of the race war happening all around and the student ordering food is not. Of course the racism is wrong. Of course the inequities are staggering and wrong. And the people who are telling you to race-profile are also trying to save your life. For kids who show up with no prior exposure to explosively racist, segregated areas with stupendous wealth disparities from one street to the next, it's the starkest way that they can warn you. Fwiw, nearly everyone south of 62nd (or west of Cottage Grove) will protect you by leaving you in a bubble because they know you have no idea what you're doing. They don't want trouble, and you are trouble. You're unlikely to get hurt just walking around. Even so, those are neighborhoods you shouldn't be wandering around without the street smarts to read what's going on. When things change, they'll probably have nothing to do with you, but you don't want suddenly to be in the middle of someone else's trouble that you don't know how to react to. tl;dr: UChicago has a police force like that for a reason. Only some of it has to do with suburban parental racism and fear. I'm trying to come up with an equivalent...this isn't quite, but when I was a bit younger than you I went to Belfast in the midst of the Troubles to have a look around. On my own. Actual likelihood of my getting hurt there: small. In fact I got invited to a party almost straightaway. But it was also genuinely dangerous, not least because of how oblivious I was to my surroundings, and I'm fortunate to be here writing this to you. Otoh, if you want to learn about America, you're right there in it in concentrated form. To live in Chicago is to get a fast, deep education in every important societal tectonic rift we have, and the people there are well-educated in these things. I don't go to any other city where I can go get my hair cut, wind up in a complex conversation about prison justice for black and brown people, and that's been a totally normal thing for as long as I've known the place. There's a reason the city riots and protests so well, and why its photojournalism is so good. Don't spend so much time with the Nobelists that you miss what the city itself has to teach.

You should check out Thomas Sowell, specifically his book Knowledge and Decisions, if for no other reason, just because he’s a Chicago alum. Many of your gripes sound like they could be with any multi cultural/racial country. There’s plenty of racism in Singapore against Maylays, it just doesn’t manifest the same way as it does in the United States because we’re a gun culture and we have horrible stains on our history. Thomas Sowell really tries to give you a frame work for how to think about these issues and reconcile your world view with the truth of the world. Really great reading.

Racial profiling is a pretty interesting thing. obviously it is morally wrong. You have mentioned the idea that social and economic class is more important than race, but it is also a statistical fact that black people are poorer overall due to systematic racism and historic oppressions. Imo ones social economic class is hard to tell just from looking and racial profiling might be a way for someone to do that?

@Odysseusf3 жыл бұрын
Real lived experience is one source of data. There are other sources of data. For a comprehensive understanding of historical events, one should have multiple data sources. Having real lived experience only is insufficient. It doesn't make one's thoughts truth-ful. For example, many Chinese have a lot to say about Zhou Enlai, because he was an icon and they lived during his time. However, the fact of the matter is that writings of Zhou have not been declassified, and we simply have insufficient evidence to make substantive historical claims about him. The most intellectually honest position is curiosity and doubt.

Hey chloe I was wondering, how hard is it to get access to resources at uchicago? Since the environment is competitive, is it hard to get a study abroad program you like or an internship or anything along those lines? Especially for non Econ majors
@asynchloe4 жыл бұрын
Its not very competitive to get resources! for lab and research opportunities, UChicago has many more resources than students to fill them --- it's competitive for econ majors because everyone wants specific firms (sometimes for no good reasons) and they only offer like 100 seats to universities across the US! -- study abroad programs (depend on language; like the paris one and Hk one is quite popular) but generally are not difficult to get into! I would say treks & externships & job shadowing at uchicago is also plentiful and not competitive for all majors!!

the competition is 10000%. From what I've heard, UChicago is not competitive at all compared to some of these schools. I've heard active sabotage stories from Berkeley, Penn, and Columbia, not including those about a much more pressurised social life as well -- at uchicago some clubs are competitive, the classes are hard, but students are v friendly and it's more of an open competition than behind your back one!

Hi Chloe! Is there a way to persuade my Chinese parents about safety at UChicago?
@asynchloe4 жыл бұрын
HAHAH i remember it was somewhat of a struggle for me too 😅 my parents were very worried but one thing that helped was that they were in a uchicago parents chat, and after listening to other parents / alumni talking about their experience they realised it's more of a "USA" thing than a "uchicago" thing, and that plus the fact that the other good universities I wanted to go to were all located in similar regions (Yale is in new haven, which i believe has one of the highest murder rates in the US, or Columbia which is located near Harlem and also a predominantly black neighbourhood like South side chicago) and so they still constantly tell me to be safe, but have definitely opened up to it!!
@asynchloe4 жыл бұрын
also one big thing I did (which isn't for everyone for I really didn't mind) was that I installed Life360 on my phone, which allows them to see where I am at all times! Our agreement was that if they can see where I am, they wouldn't question it or restrict my movements based on it (not that they would anyways) --- so in that way it makes them feel safe, but also gives me peace of mine! So when I'm out at 3am at least they know where I am and when I go home for the night etc :))

"I don't want to scare anyone away from U Chicago." Ummm.... You paint a picture of a hyper-competitive college where students are constantly comparing and judging each other. Where students overwork themselves and are rewarded with bad grades in an unfair system. It's pretty bleak honestly.
@asynchloe4 жыл бұрын
It's only bleak if you view it negatively -- UChicago is competitive, but I think compared to other colleges that are much less academically rigorous, it's a kind of competition that I mostly like --- where students urge each other on and openly talk about events they should all do to make themselves better -- It's not comparing / judging each other negatively so much, the thing I don't like about Uchicago students is that we are very conscious of how other people perceive of (specifically people outside of uchicago but inside as well!) --- we should just do what it is we do best, and don't be so insecure. And if you'd like an environment where students do not overwork themselves or do not try their very best in subjects, I dare say that Uchicago & most elite colleges is definitely not the school for you! Career wise the most competitive are any school with a bushiness undergrad, ex. Berkeley Penn Columbia all famous for their 🐍; academics wise ex. MIT Stanford Caltech Swarthmore +aforementioned schools are all very difficult and competitive too! It's more about forging a good relationship with competition and turning it into motivation :)
