Also only play fast what your pinky can reach cus I see your fingers and your pinky is long, some people have short fingers , Lol, all the fast players I see like gilbert and other shredders have skinny long fingers, so dont waste your time on neo classical shred if you have fingers that wont reach, period end of story.

Hi Brandon! Thanks for the reference. As you said in the video - context is very important. Later in my video I go into detail about how to use chunking and explain that "dirty" exercises can be done effectively within a limited range of difficulty (close to your limits, not far beyond them). Thanks for another good video. Best!

I hope u see this Brandon, I play every day 6+ hours daily because I feel like I lost 9 years of practice time. I picked up an acoustic at 15 and gave up immediately then I picked up my first electric 17 months ago and I am now gigging. Never thought that would happen. I since day one played by ear to my favorite records Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin etc I want to THANK YOU only you and only like 2 other channels for guitar helped me. most are horrible. What I’ve learned in the last year is accountability is everything and how much you play IS HUGE. Kevin nickels and u helped me with theory here and there and that helped me out a lot THANK YOU.

Great video. However, the real key to master fast playing, by mastering fast playing I mean, not just being able to play fast, but actually be confident and be in control 10 out 10 ten times, is to build up endurance. When human do things fast, they can’t really think of anything because they are mentally tired or physically tired. When we walk we can talk about anything but when we run fast, we can barely breath, let alone talking. But after years of practice, we can now run fast and still being able to control our breath and think about other things. And the only way to build up endurance is to practice at our limit, but only slightly uncomfortable zone. This is no new subject for classical musician but for electric guitar players, unexperienced musicians still grab their head everytime. And finally, you can’t fight back physics. Playing fast = less control over the sound in general, so that’s the trade off one has to make. But again, love your video.

I remember when I tried this I immediately shot up from 120 bpm to 200 bpm, but would only practice speed bursts. It led to me being much more comfortable at higher Tempos like 160 bpm, but I'm still working towards playing at 190 - 200 bpm normally. The idea that worked for me is to play short bursts of notes at a tempo that is a bit outside of your comfort zone, where you can maybe only play short bursts in time with the metronome 80% of the time, as opposed to a tempo where it's too easy and you nail it everytime, practicing speedbursts at that tempo that is just barely outside of your comfort zone will do wonders for your alternate picking speed.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I really think having the right guitar can REALLY help with playing fast. Brandon might hate it, but a shred guitar would help him play faster... Large frets and a flat radius really help with speed. Get a JP sig or Ibanez or something for shred. As much as I like telecasters, they're not easy to shred on. Sure people have somehow done it, but it's not ideal.

My school of insturment pedagogy is a kind of left brain/right brain thing. Your left brain is everything you do automatically, like form sentences in an encoded grammar, while you're right brain is going "I just want to see if anyone knows if we have any salt lying around". For instruments, left brain is technique, right brain is what you want to play. So I'd be a proponent of the slow methodology, yeah? I'm trying to teach my brain how to play these here frets without actually having to think about plucking and fretting at the same time, alternate picking, and everything else that isn't "play this thing", which is what my right brain cares about. In reality, when I first started learning to play the bass, the first "hard" song I tried to play was "Black Dog", and I went straight to the fast mode, which was studio speed, when I was probably competent at only half that speed. I didn't feel like I was learning anything, but it was important anyway, because I was taking time out to give my brain candy and cigarettes, by going "see this? If you practice, you can do this." Then I'd do more structured exercises for an hour or so, and THAT's what helped my technique. The neurons that fire together, wire together, and if your practice is sloppy, your playing will be too. Get it right, then speed it up. But don't be so disciplined that you don't actually enjoy playing; so it's okay to play WAY outside your competent tempo just to see if your sloppiness has improved, or because you just want to play the song. And it's definitely okay to stretch your competent tempo a bit, but that's the slow method. Nowadays, I can put the instrument down for a couple of years, then pick it up and play things much harder than Black Dog, until my fretting hand starts whining like a little bitch. So now I'm learning guitar. I love the nuances of the bass, and how it's the secret dictator of both the melody and rhythm, but you kinda need a band to get maximum satisfaction out of it; a guitar otoh lets you play melodies by your lonesome. And I can tell you that for toughening up your fingertips, the guitar has nothing on the bass, but JESUS CHRIST WHY DIDN"T ANYONE EVER TELL MY HOW MUCH MUSCLE I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO BUILD IN MY FRETTING HAND TO PLAY GUITAR? On bass, playing for six hours straight will make your fingers bleed. On the guitar your fingertips might be a tad sore, but you won't care because you'll be too busy trying to figure out how to remove the gallon of lactic acid that's moved into your hand and wrist, and is starting to install furniture. --veteran musician, guitar n00b

I personally like Rocksmith. It never taught me much technique, but getting to play songs I like is way more interesting than following boring tabs and doing exercises that, honestly, I just don't want to do, because I play guitar for fun so if it's not fun, then no guitar. The best part in my case is that, since I really liked playing as part of the band, I would keep coming back, so I naturally started developing dexterity, and when I play now vs 3 months ago I can tell I've gained a lot just from that little game. It pushed me to the point where I am now interested in taking the next step and learning some theory, develop a better technique, etc. so I can play more songs. I mean, I know it's not the most efficient way to make progress, but I'm surprised literally nobody recommends this learning tool, and that there isn't much sponsored content.

i played rocksmith since the second version released(wich eventually went from 2013 to 2014 to rocksmith remastered) and actually bought the import tool to play rs1 songs in remaster the benefit of playing rocksmith,beyond learning by playing songs you actually like and get you invested,is that it has a more friendly way of aproaching everything...for example,at the end of every song you practice,it doesnt tells you what you did wrong but rather what you could do to improve,practice this riff,check this lesson,etc now,no approach is bad as long as it works for you...but the tool had issues first one was that people complained a lot of the buzzing noise that could be from a variety of issues related to the realtone cable,notes not registering correctly was the one most talked about i personally stopped using it because i switched from ps3 to ps4 and now i didnt had the option to separate the video from the audio(by using a rca cable) and sent it to my pioneer sound system to avoid sound lag/latency issues wich for me,used to solve everything i know people now adays use the pc version since it contains all the songs and has the ability to play custom ones,but honestly i lost all interest since ive lost the muscle memory i built in those 3 years of practice(i litterally have it installed in my pc,with songs like bloody tears from naoto shibata and the minnibosses album...havent touched it since) i honestly think if it wasnt such a hazzle to get yourself set up to play,the tool wouldve been talked more possitively,but ubisoft refused to adress those issues claiming it was us storing the cable wrong or over used strings or the guitar needing a special tue up....and i mean theyre not wrong but not exactly fair either and the nail on the coffin was the dlcs,as more people got into it,people started voting/demanding dlcs of songs that dont exactly use guitar(or are not rock at all) ok,i get it,people reaaaaaaally wanna play miley cyrus and lady gaga songs on it,but there couldve been a bachsmith 3 or 4 or get more music from overseas,like japanese rock or even alternative from latin america like soda stereo...hell,id wouldve payed good money for 1 song of the three gipsy kings anyways,long comment is long tldr: rocksmith isnt that much recomended because in the best case scenario,it takes a while to find a proper set up and be able to stop and continue the next day...and because its discontinued in favour of a suscription service version

I wish there was a bass equivalent to your channel. :( All of the channels I find don't have this depth of content or the 52 week guitar player. Its just random bits and pieces of random bass info. I'm trying to build speed on the bass, I use guitar pro's speed trainer to slowly increase the speed higher tempos and keep track of where I make it to. Its somewhat working but I keep not being able to consistently hit the tempo I want. This helps a little bit in terms of some of the practices. Bass doesn't do anything with picking unless you use a pick but I am not one.

HELLO GUITAR PEOPLE. Should i replace the neck on my guitar? Its warped, and its some random company that probably doesnt exist anymore (20+ year old guitar) the neck being warped forces me to raise the action ridiculously high, and i was wondering if i should replace the neck. I feel like it would be a good learning experience to try to replace various parts of the guitar.I am not looking to replace the guitar, i just bought a new one, but this one has value to me.
@salva35574 күн бұрын
you should bring it to a luthier, if it just has a typical up-bow or back-bow that can be fixed without replacing the neck, it's fixed just by simply adjusting the truss rod a bit, which is pretty cheap sometimes free in some guitar centers. If it's twisted, getting it fixed would be kinda expensive cause you gotta refret it possibly and also possibly have the frets leveled.

My process has been separate some parts into shorter segments while practicing the entire lick after.

100 is your limit, you go 130 right away and put in some time. It'll be frustrating but give it like 15 mins with some breaks of course or your hand might fall off. Then go back up a notch at 120 and smile because you're not as sloppy as 130 and not as slow as 100. This is what has worked for me. My practice song = Periphery - Marigold. Btw, if you don't practice enough, you'll come back yo to your 100 pretty fast. And it can get worse. So, practice to build that muscle and muscle memory and hand synchronisation and technique and etc.
