@@fisher3317 Darn. I keep forgetting that America only has two real parties in practice compared to other first-world nations. Thanks for the correction there, man.
@fisher33172 ай бұрын
@@Cyberweasel89 No problem. As an American, I don't think the two-party system is keeping up with how much the the internet and social media is affecting current political discourse these days. It used to be that both parties fielded "mostly" normal candidates, and there was more of an "agree to disagree" mentality when it came to discourse. However, the partisan echo chambers and financial incentives to spread fear mongering and/or misinformation have led to American politics becoming the nightmare it is right now. I think if we had more parties and wider representation of the political spectrum, I think it would better mitigate these changing times (as well as sanctioning some of the more extreme voters to smaller parties).
@Cyberweasel892 ай бұрын
@@fisher3317 Oh, absolutely. I work in academics and the way American politics have shifted to embracing extremism, fearmongering ignorance, and greed-based con artistry has been a point of study up here, especially since the UK had a similar shift with Boris Johnson and Brexit and there's signs that we might be in the middle of the process of shifting that way too. It feels like not even 10 years ago that American politicians could go across the aisle without being considered a party traitor for it. Most of my colleagues believe that it was Newt Ginrich who was the most influential figure in fighting against cooperation across the aisle and making "us vs. them" normalized among politicians. Sadly I don't have the expertise to agree or disagree on that since my field isn't really specialized towards political analysis. Though I've heard about Mitch McConnell being "the great obstructor" and I can't help feeling that if there was another politician who was second to Newt in erecting a firm wall between the parties that remains to this day, it was the Turtle Man. Just don't take that as an academic theory, please. Consider it hyperbole. I don't have solid findings to back it up, it's just my personal suspicion based on following the news over the years and talking to American colleagues, and "American politics" was always my least favorite subject in high school. Yeah, they teach us about that up here in America's hat. You can expect a lot of the teenagers crack jokes at the USA's expense, though the high school teachers try to speak neutrally when teaching about American government so as to remove any jingoistic bias. Crap, now I'm rambling. This is why it's always bad for academics to get into KZbin comment sections. We tend to go on tangents.
@fisher33172 ай бұрын
@@Cyberweasel89 No problem, I completely understand. Nevertheless, I do have hope that things will get better here. All signs so far point to Kamala winning the 2024 election (although it's not absolute, and the possibility that Trump wins can't be ruled out). I think most people are reasonable and the crazies just tend to be the loudest and most active. The more the Republican party radicalizes and stays blindly loyal to Trump, the more they push away moderates/independent voters (such as the case with my Aunt who previously voted for Bush and Mitt Romney). I still hope the legacy of Donald Trump will inspire future voters/politician to try to do things to avoid an ultra partisan/personality cult mentality from dominating the American political landscape again.
