The image isn't real clear, but it doesn't seem she's cutting her wrist but, rather, the medial side of her forearm right in between the dorsal and the ventral. I gather this is a common place for self-mutilators to cut, but it's not going to be fatal. Even cutting at that angle on the actual wrist would probably not be fatal. But I'll offer no corrections as to the proper way to do it.

Likewise, poor translations and shoddy marketing.

When kids end up with inappropriate things it often is down to the parents' poor judgement, but in this case I do not believe it was the parents' fault. Yes, it was called "evilstick" but firstly, the packaging seems appropriate at first glance- you, as a consumer, would not expect to have to fully inspect a toy like this to determine whether or not it's appropriate for a child, just as when you buy food you'd not expect to have to fully inspect it to determine whether or not it's safe to eat. Secondly, "evilstick" could so easily be bad translation for "magicstick" or "witchstick" or something along those lines- I've seen some awfully bad translation in the past because they're so cheaply manufactured. In my opinion this is utterly inappropriate imagery for a child of any age and I am disturbed that people are making excuses for the shop owner and the creators of the toy to be honest...

I took it as "A stick that fights off Evil!" Especially with the Cardcaptor Sakura image... I mean come on... that packaging SCREAMS fighting evil.. Especially with the wording used for the advertisement... So yeah, anyone just randomly browsing for their child may grab it and think "Aww my little darling will be fighting evil with this! Look dear, it makes wonderful music too!" ...queue gushy, lovey, doting mother scene But I also think if the mother would have clicked the button... then she'd hear the music it made. Some people... just don't pay attention... it's the 'ol mindless shopping bit. -_-

Not to sound crazy but I have a few Chinese friends. They have a different sense of humor. As soon as I saw this I asked my friend about it and he laughed. He said, "well it's called Evil Stick and looks pretty until you push the button and look at the scary image" and then he started laughing... he thought it was really funny and saw no harm in giving it to kids because it was a funny joke. No they are not THAT different all the time, but hell have you ever heard of some of the popular porn out there? Weird and gross to our standards. There is a cartoon called LaBlueGirl where the chick defeats Demons by having sex with them... the first one to cum dies. there are all kinds of "Tentacle sex" type things out there and some other really weird fetish stuff. I have one crazy guy friend that always tells me about the weird stuff he finds from other countries.

You are certainly right that cultural context and differing taboos, etc. are a real thing. I actually also see some morbid humor in this, as an adult. I'd think *most* people would have some concern that this would give a child nightmares, etc. even if they aren't afraid that they'd emulate the picture, cultural context aside. There are going to be exceptions, of course I find this genuinely creepy although I probably wouldn't think the picture itself so bad in another context. I think if I'd picked this up in the store unawares, and hit the button, the dissonance between the appearance and the sound and picture would have given me a genuine shock.

bowlsallbroken your right and have completely dismissed my proposition, but I have another thing to say. I'm pretty sure that the toy is supposed to be a gag gift. Possibly get the gift for your friend as a birthday gift. The friend will be like "Really, a child's toy?" then he will press the button and get a shock and everyone will laugh. Although, the product should be sold with some kind of label that the toy is such in the store, but if the store owner did not know that the toy was supposed to *be* a gag gift in the first place, he could easily think that it is just a cheap crappy Chinese kid toy and put it with the other kid toys. Or the store owner is just doesn't have an appropriate area in the store in which he can place the item, so he just got lazy and threw it in the rest of the kid toys.
