It's good to see Americans appreciating the Discovery. Early cars are getting rarer in the UK but, go to any farm near me, and you'll find lots of them. Farmers buy multiple Discos and use some for spares, so you'll see them dotted about the farmyards

Wow did you say 280000 miles? I just got a 97 SD discovery for Christmas. I’m doing the water pump, 180 deg thermostat, serpentine belt, all the hoses (even the small ones lol) valve cover gaskets, oil separater aka pcv, bypassing the rear window relay, replacing all the window regulator bushings with aluminum ones from eBay, rust repair under the alpine windows and probably a lot lot more lol. Your videos helped me decide to buy this discovery. Thanks
@tfrasca Жыл бұрын
Yup, 287,000 miles as of today. That’s awesome to hear about yours. I REALLY wish mine was an SD with no sunroofs. You’re not missing anything by not having those. I’m simultaneously glad and sorry that I influenced you to get an old Disco, but the maintenance will be worth it.

😂 I got it to have something to work on. Because I’m so bored that I have to go back to working on cars, 10 years after changing careers from auto mechanic. 👨🔧

By the way, what oil has been used your discovery to get such good engine life? I’m thinking of using rotella 15-40
@tfrasca Жыл бұрын
@@josephhomen I’ve used everything from 10w30 to 20w50, but I think right now it has some 15w40 in it. I have been having a cold start oil pressure issue, and it seems to like thinner oil better for that. To me, it seems like the oil pickup is clogged, but I dropped the sump and it’s fine. Might do the oil pump gears if I decide to keep the 4.0 in there long term.
@josephhomen Жыл бұрын
I have heard that they are prone to have the oil pump gears crack and have low oil pressure. I also saw a video where the thick paint/coating on the valley came off and chunks of it clogged the oil pickup. What I have seen is in motors with low oil pressure is silicone or broken pieces of plastic will get sucked up in the oil pickup causing low pressure. Then later the piece will fall off or move and the oil pressure will go up.

I agree with you on the stickers anchoring in the proper time and feel. Overall I like your discovery. So many people go a bit too extreme for my tastes and what's really practical or even needed for a vehicle that your going to drive on a highway to the off road experience. Unless your a professional off roader it will take some time to adjust your driving to the vehicle itself as the changes are applied. I enjoy the Videos, and if I am telling the truth It is just because of the Land Rover in the video. I have watched nearly every off road video that exists where Land Rovers are featured. Mostly the Range Rover Classics and Discoveries. I really like videos that have Range Rovers and Discovery's with other Brands and makes, so I can see how they perform on the same trails, under the same conditions and the way they are configured. This altered my own Range Rover classic development so it would fit my needs, and I love what I ended up with. I am sure no matter what way you go in the future it will be a great fit for you. Thanks again for the videos, I will see you one day on the trails up in my home state of Oregon.

My D2 V8 is just at 196,000 and I agree that it can feel a little gutless, but it does sound good. Also agree that an LS would make a nice addition - especially as I am pretty certain it would do more to the gallon than the Rover lump !

Great truck and a great video! But then I am biased been a landie nutter since the 1970s in the New Zealand army - we had shed loads and several variants including the Aussie "Skippy" Series 2's and the very last of stage 1 V8 Series threes purchased by any Army anywhere in the world. Since then I have had many Landies and I now have a D1 200TDI 2 door camper model which is a work in progress. I am leaning heavily toward Terra firm suspension upgrade and the E-Locker thanks to your videos! Great work!

I often find myself daydreaming of a LS and 6 speed. My tired 3.5 even has trouble on freeway overpasses lol. Love the build. Subtle but capable
@tfrasca Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate that. Even my 4.0 really struggles. I’m sure the cam lobes are pretty flat with the mileage it has. But yeah, ripping it all out is pretty tempting! I’ve been perusing Marketplace for a decent used 6L80e transmission but I force me into making some moves.

Your Disco is great. I have a D1 300TDI from '98 . It is currently in the process of reconstruction. I've been considering a suspension from terrafirma. Your car shows that it's the right choice :o) . Greetings from Poland.

Its a charming truck. I’m currently contemplating a bone stock 97disco 1 with the 5 speed. Yours is pretty close to the vision I have in mind for it, except for the roof rack. I’m afraid I’m going to have to go with the tubular for that 90s look.
@tfrasca8 ай бұрын
Yeah, you really can’t beat the look of a tubular steel rack on a 90s D1.

Which TerraFirma rock rails are you using? From their website it appears that they only sell them for Disco2s. Thanks!

They are D2 sliders, and I added the steps/tree bars to the outside of them. Here's a video of that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5W5dIZ_rL1gnJIfeature=shared

@@tfrasca thanks man, I've been looking for a set for our 97' and the options are pretty limited.
Had a disco 1 wit ha 300tdi. It was shot lived and moved on to an RRC and then finally a defender. Your videos are making me look at discos again! Bummer on the ATB, did you ever figure it out? Did you reach out to Ashcroft on what happened?
@tfrasca10 ай бұрын
That's cool to hear, thanks! I know Defenders are the holy grail of Land Rover ownership, but I feel like you can get most of the way there with a D1 for a fraction of the cost. As for the ATB, I think it's working as intended. In the snow and on mud, it's great, but when one of the front tires is in the air or barely touching the ground, there's not enough traction to transfer torque evenly. It's something I knew going into it, but now after having it for a while, I'd go with a selectable locker over the ATB or any type of limited slip.
@keith636010 ай бұрын
@@tfrasca oh you definitely get a lot of the defender’s attributes in a disco 1 for sure. Even better NVH and with the 100 inch wheelbase, comfier than the my d90. Now looking at used ones again haha

Funny you should mention that. I placed the order, then checked in after a month or so. They cancelled the order because it had apparently gotten lost. Then a couple weeks later, it showed up. Not ideal.

@tfrasca4 ай бұрын
@@SBNC0 That's good news. Installation was tricky, since it's such a big decal. But to be fair, I had little to no experience with that kind of thing. When you get yours, you'll notice there's actually another, lighter grey stripe under the darker grey ones. I messed one of those up and gave up on it.
